20040131 ~ Cruising Jan 31 2004 Western Who's with us?

Gary and Gail, thanks for the rescue. Did you wear your toques to identify you?

Bobby, welcome to the boards.

Renae, Judi and I would support a non-smoking time or day at Rocking Bar D. We're non-smokers.

Juli, your car problem does not sound good. Sounds like the computer sees one wheel as going slower than another, thinks you are in a skid, and is trying to correct for you. Hopefully the brake guy just didn't get the new pads fitted correctly.

I'm up early - worrying about everything I have to get done in the next three days before we leave. I'm putting more on my list than I'm crossing off.

Talk with you all later.

Update: I did reach Gail, thanks!
Thanks!

Karyn

Everything was ok then, any damage or injury? *worried*

Nikki - White Oleander is disturbing? Oh no! I'm the sensitive one in our family and can't handle too much of that. I may have to know what disturbing means. Kid's getting hurt really bothers me. I'm upset for days after I read it. Forget about seeing any scary or violent movies for me.

Yes, it's very disturbing but more in terms of how a teen girl deals with her life. ALOT of sex/drugs/abuse - there's a suicide - it is a tour of the worst of the whole Social Services/Foster family setup from the inside, in other words, Ingrid's experience. It's a fairly "rough" book, but Ingrid had a horrible life after her mom went to prison - much of it she actually does to herself, to FEEL something - you know, if you're angry, it's easier to ignore the pain...

They really cut ALOT out of the movie, although what they leave is very true to the book.

It's emotionally gripping and I really REALLY enjoyed it, but I remember saying "I can't BELIEVE they can make a MOVIE Out of that book, what is it going to be, triple rated R?"

PS - Karyn guess I should really read all the posts before I post a question, glad your kids are good! Yay Gary and Gail!

Thanks Nikki! Yes, Gary and Gail came charging to the rescue!

That book sounds like one I would avoid! I'm not a big fan of "rough".

Bobby, welcome! I'm glad my Jilly welcomed you. She likes to hang out on the boards. Last year on the cruise she became great friends w/a DIS kid also named Bobby.

I'm up early - can't sleep well anymore. Always worrying.

Karyn

Wow, it's a slow morning. I guess it's getting down to the wire to get everything done before leaving for VACATION! It's especially hectic for me this week because DH is away.

HADD!

I'm a total stress case today...don't know why really...the kids were HORRID yesterday, I would have locked them in the trunk of my car if it wasn't against some law... *grin* Thank goodness they're back to school today.

My manager has been on maternity leave and came back today...so my posting might be a tad "delayed" till after work... *sigh*

Went shopping yesterday for a few cruise things - got one of those "over the door" shoe holder things, mainly because i'll use it at home later as well, and I figured it can't hurt, right? And found some of those space saver bags at Sears - ten bucks for three, 2 medium size which supposedly hold 4 tshirts and 1 sweater, and 1 large which supposedly holds 6 tshirts and 2 sweaters, or something like that. So we have 6 in total. Now to find the big ziplocks for the "wet stuff"...and we're looking good. :)

Good morning all!

Aunt Ranae - so, so jealous of your ability to see and hear the fireworks at MK. We won't be in town long enough to see them. I know it's silly, but I cry every year at the live Tarzen Rocks show when they sing "You'll Be in My Heart." I always feel so fortunate as a single mom to be able to afford to bring my kids to WDW.

Dean - the toque picture made me laugh out loud. I can't believe you spent so much time searching for the other one. Maybe we should have searches for other previous info mentioned and give prizes (like toques or magnets?).

Annie - hopefully Cap, Dean, Gary and Randy will do some superbowl body painting to liven up those northern bellies.

Juli - if you're looking for some light, very funny cruise reading, try the Bubbles Yablonski series. They're hysterical. I'm partial because they're set in the town I grew up in, Bethlehem, PA. Bubbles is a ditzy hairdresser with lots of common sense that is trying to be a reporter and ends up being a pretty good detective. Her sense of humor would fit in well with this group.

Bobby - I agree that this thread is like a soap opera. Hard to stay away because you don't want to miss anything. Any suggestions for a name anyone?

Karyn - I'm a worrier too. I read something that said that if that is your makeup, set aside 30 minutes a day to worry. Then any other time during the day when something comes up, push it to your worry time. I started that about 2 years ago and have improved tremendously. I told my sister about it and she said she'd be too worried that there would be nothing to worry about at worry time.

All you Canadians - can I be an honorary Canadian too? My favorite beer is Molson Golden. The only place you can get that in Orlando is the Canadian pavilion in Epcot.

I didn't see the 10 day boogie from anyone either? Dean are you slipping?

Oh yeah - and Cap, thanks for the GMT explanation. I couldn't figure out what time zone that was. Figured it was somewhere in Europe.

Shannon,

If I did body painting to liven up the Northern bellies, then you'd see a big landscape. I think I'll keep the TShirt on.

Somehow I missed the toque picture the first time around. Just checked it out LOL!

Barbara - I am ready to start the single digit dance tomorrow!

I told my sister about it and she said she'd be too worried that there would be nothing to worry about at worry time.
This is me!!!! I do like your idea though, I am going to have to give that a try.

I guess I'm already in the single digits! WOW! What a scary thought! I have 8 or 9 days, counting today to get everything here finished! GASP!

Barbara, I'm really not a worrier - not normally, but when my kids are driving in bad weather, and when I'm in the middle of packing to move across the country after 27 years, I guess I'm worrying a bit more than usual!

Annie, I was going to ask about the body paint, too! So is that going to be your attire when you parasail on CC? Very very interesting.

Nikki, hang in there!

Kim, sorry you're all alone! Been that way now for quite awhile with weeks to go!

Dean, where are you?

Renae, I still haven't called Capt. Marvins.....need to do that.

So, I gotta get back at the work! I'm finishing up the dining room right now. I need to make a huge dent on the downstairs today!

I'll check in later

Karyn

"Officially" I've been calling the Day Dances based on the sailing date of the Magic. HOWEVER, if anyone wants to have their own personal 10 or single digit dance, by all means get down and BOOGIE!!!:cool1:

Again, "Officially", the Ten Day Dance is tomorrow and (DARE I SAY IT???) the SINGLE DIGIT DANCE is Thursday!!!

CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!?!?!?

HADD!!! :wave2:

Hey everyone,
I just found out what we will be wearing to board OUR ship! Eric had ordered matching shirts for all of us, and I just opened the box (thanks UPS man!) they are gray t-shirts with DCL on the front and 'Hale Family 2004' on the back. Cool!

Karyn, You'd better get movin, girl! I just had to email them again to say we have 3 going because my DFIL decided he might want to go after all! He thought we'd have to swim out to the sandbar, lol. He's 81 and says he can't swim like he used to as a scout master. He had to do a qualifying swim last year in Bear Lake Idaho, (freezing water) and said swimming 100 yards was just too much for him. I can't imagine swimming that far now in warm water, but to do it at 80 in cold water... NOT. I think he'll have a blast! We're in the 10-1pm half day trip. Hope to hear from you soon that you booked it too! (not like you have anything else to do today, after all...) *grins*

talk to you all later,
Renae

Gary - I guess everyone is keeping their own countdowns for their specific point of departure. Maybe there should be an OFFICIAL countdown to boarding time. I'm coming to Orlando Friday night, so that's my countdown.

Dean - where are you? Actually working today? Torque hunting? Perusing the past annuls of our "Days of Our Countdown" thread? Compiling a new, mega list of boarders (much appreciated, by the way)?

Gary & Gail- How very, very nice of you! I can't wait to meet such nice people like you!

Karyn-- We are so glad that the kids are OK! Its true that the bigger they get- the bigger the problems! My son Bobby rolled his car this summer and when he called-- I knew something was wrong when he just said "mom". Everyone was Ok then too -- thank God!

Barbara-- I really don't run that fast, so I'm sure you can keep up and you can drop out at anytime! I think Annie should run with us too! I love to talk when I run, so the more the merrier! I know I will need to run off all that food on the cruise!!!

HADD & see you all soon!
Dorie

Hi to all of you Jan 31 cruisers!
It sounds like many of you are getting packed and ready to go. I spent my day shopping today buying some shorts, tshirts for the kids (I hate spending full price for these items...$30 bucks for a pair of boys size 5 shorts!! ouch!!)
But this is Canada and we have a ton of snow so I have to pay alot to find anything summery this time of year!
Does anyone know where the nearest Target or Shopping Plaza to Orlando Airport or any near Port Canaveral? we are flying in on Friday morning and were planning on spending the day at Kennedy Space Center. BUT...if weather is not co operating then we might as well find a local shopping mall and stock up on some extra clothes for the trip.
I bought an extra Memory Card for the digital camera, DVDS for the camcorder, sunblock, The new Oprah reading booking...Cry the beloved country...looks like a short read.
I even went to a tanning salon to get a start on the tanning...then I won't be quite so pasty white.
Sorry I am writing a novel here!! Any good advice on extras that we should bring? I will remember my chewing gum...can't buy it in disney still right?

Have a good day!

OOH!! The Florida Mall (No joke- it's really called "the florida mall") Is just outside of the airport!! I'm pretty sure it's on Semeron (<-sp?) on the way out. My folks and i had to pick up my cousin from a later flight, so in the meantime, we waited at the Florida mall and we bought a few last-minute must-haves! (Last time, i went into a department store and found a gorgeous dress on clearance and it made a PERFECT formal on board!)

I hope i can convince someone to take me shopping in FL cause there are NO sunglasses in chicago!! I've done pretty well on the other "summery" items... things like sandals, tank tops, dresses- all on clearance! Then again, this is chicago... not Canada- i'm not quite sure how stores work up there!

Annette,
As far as shopping goes, there are Disney shops in both terminals at the airport. There is a surf shop on the main drag in Cocoa Beach, just a few minutes from the pier. They have reasonable priced things there. There are several stores like shopco, walmart, etc near Disney, so you can pick and choose from them.

As far as extra things to bring, I have one high reccomendation for you. Last cruise we would have welcomed a pair of earplugs each. We had noisy neighbors in the adjoining cabin. They got in horrible fights every night and we had to listen to it as we were just falling asleep right then. You may not need them, but it's better to have the earplugs just in case.

The weather is great here right now. I'll post a weather report once it's within a 5 day forecast range, but it's in the mid 70's every day and sunny! WooHoo!!!

Renae:sunny:

Hi,
The Florida Mall is on the intersection of Sand Lake road and Orange Blossom Trail, also known as OBT, 441, 17, 92, 1792 etc. Just look for any of those names and you should be able to find it easily. I shop there often and it's a great mall, be prepared to walk, it's the biggest mall I've ever seen, it even has it's own high rise hotel! They do have some good sales there right now.

Good Day, eh!

Karen, I was ROTFL when I read your suggestion about the bodypainting for parasailing... I had posted about what to wear at the spa and someone suggested bodypaint (he hasn't seen my body - the old grey mare she ain't what she used to be - okay I'm not grey but definitely not bodypainting material...)

Randy was admitted to the hospital today with pneumonia... he was fine yesterday... was at a meeting today and started getting clammy, disoriented, dizzy, nauseous, chest pain, etc. so against his wishes, someone took him to the hospital, and now he has to stay for a few days to get his pneumonia in check... it's called atypical pneumonia because he doesn't have the normal symptoms... I'm heading back there right away, just stopped at home to get him some pj's... he doesn't like the hospital gowns, go figure... I guess if it was going to happen, it's better to happen now than a week from now or on the trip. The doc says he should be good as new by the time we leave (8 days from today)...
I'll keep you posted...
Ann
