I happened to be in London, staying, by myself, in a small hotel.
I was watching the BBC when it came out that the Berlin Wall had fallen, and people were free to move from East to West. I was literally glued to TV that night. Born in 1955, I had grown up to think that Germany, at least within my lifetime, would be divided. I also recall thinking Drat! Germany whole again! Of course, my fears have not been realized.
Five years ago I went on a cruise in which we visited Berlin. I bought a piece of the Berlin Wall (I bet that pieces will be for sale as long as tourist exists and a piece of mortar and faded paint last). Nevertheless, I still have that piece of wall. It was an amazing experience for me to experience Berlin in person; yet I bet that I will recall that night, twenty years ago!, in a cheap London hotel.
