Being a newbie to the DIS boards, please forgive me if this topic has been over-discussed, but... does anyone know of any way to go about convincing Disney big-wigs to bring back this Magic Kingdom attraction?! DH went on it back in the 70"s when he was a kid and loved it. My three kids and I have not been able to go on it before it was closed. Any word on a renovation?! Advanced thanks.

No I think it's down for the count just like the skyway but....

I really wanted my son to see what I got to ride on and found a guy on ebay selling DVD's with ride footage of a lot of stuff that isn't there anymore. I got the old parade with pete's dragon, the orignal spectra magic thing, footage of 20,000 leagues, a short snipit of space mountain with the lights on inside, and a couple other things. Personally I can't wait to see it myself and I'm sure my son will think it's cool :cool2: :cool2: :cool2:

Here is a link, I haven't got mine yet so I can't attest to the quality but just seeing 20,000 leagues again will be great.

I doubt it. It has been gone for a long time, and was rarely up and running when it was still there.

I saw it drained once on a backstage tour and it was eerie. I'd imagine that the ride was extremely expensive to run, and probably had a lot of liabilty issues. :( Good ride, but I can see why it would not be easy to re-open.

I think one of the other obstacles is that the old 20,000 Leagues submarines were not anywhere near being accessible for ADA purposes, having to go through the hatch and down the stairs (as I recall) to enter the submarine for the ride. It would take a MAJOR redesign.

Also, as a Christmas present my parents put all of our old Super8 movies onto DVD, included is our Disney visit in 1976 with 20,000 Leagues footage and the Bicentennial parade.... brings back some great memories!

Sinclaire, you got gypped! I bought the same item from this guy and the picture quality is crud-like and the sound-quality... there is no word to describe that.

I tried watching it on my 46" screen and it's 100% unwatachable. Watching it on a 20" from 12 feet away makes the picture quality somewhat bearable.

Has anyone tried the old fashioned petition, maybe updated via the internet?! There has got to be some way to harness the power of DIS'ers to let Disney know what we want! I'm all for it but am far from knowing how to go about it. Any ideas?

Rumor has it that they are going to begin demolition work on the lagoon in the next year or so (after sitting empty for 10 years).

There is talk of putting on a Little Mermaid area similar to the one at Tokyo DisneySea.

What is the one like at Tokyo Disney do you know? 10 years is so long for that to sit empty it is about time they did something there!

I agree that any rehab of 20K is not going to happen:( If WDW wants to recreate anything from Tokyo Disneysea, BRING IT ON.
It has the reputation of being a premiere Disney park.:earsboy:

Please don't be mad at me.....but I fell asleep on that ride.

1990, our first trip with our daughter, we went on on our last day there, after 7 days of commando touring. It has nostalgic charm, but it is a snoozer

From what I've seen, Mermaid Lagoon is an area that feels like you're underwater. A good portion of it is inside. The theming is pretty cool. It contains a number of kid's rides (well-themed, but standard rides).

Here is a link to the descriptions on the official website.

Of course it's all just a rumor right now (from a number of websites), so it may be a whole area, or just a few rides (or nothing at all). There is also a related rumor that the ugly Toontown tents may also go and allow Toontown to be expanded, since it is adjacent to the lagoon.

I think the Little Mermaid attractions at Tokyo Disney look really cute. It'd be great if Disney finally did something with the 20,000 leagues area instead of just letting it sit empty. The Little Mermaid is very popular - I think something like this would really make a lot of people/children happy. :)

Can you still see 20000 Leagues at WDW? I want to take a look just for nostagic reasons. It is the one of the few really clear memories of WDW from when I was a child. Where is it located? I don't even remember which part of the MK it was in but I sure do remember riding it. :(

It's funny how going back 25 years or so ago the few things I remember are that, having a fruitbowl breakfast in the Contemporary while the Monorail was wizzing by and meeting Pluto finally on our last night and my parents not having any film left

That Little Mermaid area looks extremely cool - that would be a great addition particularly in that area!

plutosgirl, the 20k lagoon remains in Fantasyland across from Winnie-the-Pooh...the old entrance to the ride where you used to queue up is now used as a character greeting area from time to time - you can still see the lagoon and its surrounding area, but they've removed all of the old submarine crafts

That's because the OLC put up the cash. It is always interesting to see what Disney can do when someone else is footing the bill.

The TOT they are getting looks more elaborate and detailed than the one at MGM.

That Mermaid lagoon looks so nice! That would be a great addition to the MK! It would be great if they took down those toontown fair tents too. I think that toontown alltogether could be better, its a good concept but really the only neat thing in that part is the barnstormer.
