2 WI Adults Spring Break @ Disney A Mar '12 PTR *Update 3/12 We're Back!!*

So, the first thing I noticed watching Pinocchio was that the DVD has a PSA on how smoking is bad for you. Was this included when we were kids too? I thought it was funny! "Smoking is bad for you (Insert clip of sweet little Pinocchio turning green when he smokes)." They didn't have one on 101 Dalmations, and let face it, Cruella smoked like a chimney in that movie. :confused3

Anyhow, just a quick update with the food. I made Strombolis. Eh, thats pretty clever, right? These are super easy to make and super yummy. I just bought a pre-made pizza crust (The kind that comes in a tube like biscuits). Cut it in half before you un-roll it. Then, I gave it a good smear of ranch dressing, tp that with diced pepperoni, a bit of diced green onion, and lots of mozzarella cheese. Then just roll up! Place seem side down on a greased baking sheet, brush the tops with a little egg wash and bake according to the directions on the package. I serve this with a side of marinara for dipping. You could also replace the ranch with marinara if you prefer. The end result?

DSC01244.jpg

We had these on a Friday night, and were also frying "Figaro's Fresh-Caught Fish Sticks". And they are Figaro's, not Cleo's because well, that is just morbid. Didn't grab a picture of the fish, but it looked like your normal fried fish!

Up Next: March 4th - Day 1 Plans

Man those Stromboli's look yummy.. I might have to make those one night for my family. I'm always looking for new things for our family to try out. But right now money is kinda tight because my dh lost his job last month and we are trying to pay for our rent here in AZ and a house note in WA.. So cheap meals like this will work great for my family.

We had two cats in WA one would jump on the counters in the bathroom to drink from the tap and our other kitty would sleep in the bathroom sink... They were both silly cats I just wish we were able to bring them with us on our move but we were not..Maybe sometime soon I can get my children another kitty.

Just LOVE all the pictures in your PTR.. keep them coming

So sorry to hear about your husband's job. We have been lucky so far in this economy but many others at Adam's job have not been. Here is to hoping that all those out of work will be back to it in no time.

Well hello there again everyone. Can ya'll tell that I am enjoying my first days off of work in 4 months and that it is aboslutely freezing outside? And Adam is off to the Packer game today sooo....may as well continue with my trip planning.

In continuing with my compulsive planning, I now present to you our first full Disney Day of plans....

I hope we get a good nights sleep because we have an early morning breakfast at our very first park of the entire trip....

Any guesses on where that is....?

Really....no guesses?

Are you sure.....?

Like Really really sure?

Sorry...know this isn't funny...just taking up some page room....

Magic Kingdom! Even though they are hosting extra magic hours in the evening, and even though all the planning sources warned me not to go here...I just couldn't help myself. There is nothing like the magic of seeing the castle, and it just wouldn't feel right and proper to not go here on our first official park day. That being said, we also have never taken advantage of Extra Magic hours, so I definitely want to give them a try. Now is a good time to mention that we plan to use RideMax for our trip. We used it last time and I thought it was amazing. We used it just for our "pre-lunch" portion of the day. Using Ridemax we were usually able to get through all of our attractions before our lunch break and then used the afternoon to either relax back at the hotel, seeing shows, or any of the walk through attractions. Ridemax hasn't posted hours yet for our trip, but I will re-post our plans when available.

In keeping with tradition, our first Park breakfast will be at.....

DSC00167.jpg

For our first full Magic Kingdom day, we like to get through Adventureland, Frontierland, Liberty Square and some of Fantasyland.

For lunch we will use up some snack credits or perhaps and out of pocket stop at The Plaza.

I would also like to see the afternoon parade here as I haven't before.

After the parade it will be back to the hotel for us for a nap or pool time before we depart for dinner at.....

DSC02342.jpg

Ohana

This will be a first for us! It never even ocurred to me to have a reservation here last time, but I had Adam's interest at "endless skewers of meat". I know that they receive very hit or miss with reviews, but I think we are the "we will go and see for ourselves" kind of folk.

Since we don't really have any plans for the evening it won't stress me out at all if things run a little behind at Ohana.

After our meal we will waddle ourselves to either the Poly Beach to watch the fireworks, or if time allows, to the monorail station to catch them at Magic Kingdom.

Then we will head over to Magic Kingdom to enjoy extra magic hours until last man standing.

Up Next: Flashback to Day 1 of our 2010 trip.

So, Day 1 started much too early for us. Being inexperienced, and having an 8:05 AM Breakfast ADR were a bad combo for me. Out to the bus stop we went at 6:45 AM. By 7:00 AM we were on a bus headed to the mornings destination. It was a whopping 15ish minute drive, which definitely lead to a lot of sitting and waiting. And more sitting and waiting. And more, well, you get the picture. At least I had some time to play with my new camera.

DSC00154.jpg

DSC00156.jpg

Have you figured out where we are yet? Thats right! Our first park of the trip was Magic Kingdom. We were let into the park about 7:45 AM and I sent Adam off to check in for breakfast, while I took some more pictures.

Before I knew it, Adam was running up to get me saying breakfast was waiting for us. So, off we went to....

DSC00167.jpg

I just want to take a moment and reflect on the fact that this place is absolutely gorgeous! I mean both inside and out. I wanted to take pictures of it, but for some reason, I can't find them on photobucket.

Our servers name was Jay, and he was wonderful. Very attentive and even made a funny Brett Favre joke (this was pre-photo scandal days). He was the perfect balance of attentive and non-intrusive for a buffet breakfast. I will warn you that I did not take any pictures of food at buffets. I was really good at capturing the food porn at table service restaurants though. I hope to get over this irrational phobia on our next trip!

We were able to belly up to the buffet and grab a plate before the characters started making their way around. At this point the place was half empty! In fact, we never did have a party seated next to us before we left.
Heres a few pictures:

DSC00172.jpg

DSC00175.jpg

For a buffet, this was aboslutely awesome! Really wonderful variety, I'm not sure you could find a breakfast food that you would want that was not on this buffet! It also got an extra bonus for being the only buffet we went to that offered chocolate Mickey waffles. Delish! Great selection of both cut and whole fruits, a niced mixed berry blend of raspberries, strawberries, blueberries and blackberries. Also whole strawberries with cream, yogurts, swiss and cheddar cheese in cubes, whole boiled eggs, a wonderful spiced peach cobbler, chocolate crossaints, banana bread, Pooh's puffed french toast, glazed donut holes, pastrami smoked salmon, roasted baby reds, sausage, bacon, egg frittata (which really was not a frittata at all, just scrambled eggs with sliced tomatoes and cheese on top), omelettes to order, bagels, breakfast pizza, corned beef hash. I'm sure there was in fact more, but that is all I managed to jot down.

By the time we were done with breakfast it was only about 8:45, so we had lots of time left before the park opened. I used it to snap some more pictures.

Woohoo! Now it was time for the park to open, so we headed off for our first ride of the day....

So, before the break, we were just about to head off for our first ride of our trip!

DSC00196.jpg

This was always one of my favorites at Disneyland. I'm really glad we got the opportunity to ride it before we went on Kilimanjaro Safaris, because it really will never be the same again. Did they change the shtick that the skipper does? For some reason I remember it being a lot funnier than what it was.

We made our way onto Splash Mountain...

And then we made it over to Liberty Square where we stopped here:

DSC00236-1.jpg

By this time we were already about an hour ahead of our Ridemax plan. Where were all the people??

We had some fun...

DSC00243.jpg

We sent this picture out as a Gag Christmas card with the tagline "Hope your Christmas is as happy as ours is!" Really, we did.

Then we went to meet our 999 happy haunts here:

DSC00244.jpg

DSC00245.jpg

At this time we were running out of things to do, our plan was basically over till the end of the day, and it was about an hour before our lunch ADR, we headed over anyway, and they were able to accomodate us.

Below is an excerpt from my 2010 dining review.

Before we even knew it, it was time for lunch, and to be honest, neither of us was really hungry, but somehow we managed. Our server's name on the receipt shows as Consuelo, but I think for some reason that her name was Consuela.

We started with
DisneyworldAugust2010-2227.jpg

Crab and Spinach Dip for Two - blue crab, spinach, cream cheese and flatbread $10.99

This was the only time all trip I encountered artificial crab meat, so I'm really not sure why they went through the extra trouble of listing this as "Blue" crab on the menu, because it definitely was not. This tasted like your run of the mill spinach dip, similar to what you would get from TGI Fridays. No crab flavor at all. But, it was good, and the pitas served with it came out warm, but didn't stay like that for very long. I had a problem with the fact that our server neglected to bring out any plates for this, and they also don't have cloth napkins here (not that paper naps are a problem at all). So we ate our aps over unfolded paper napkins on the table, which was a little awkward, but neccessary, since they Pita's were crisp and toasted it was really difficult to control our crumbs.

It was right about this time that Consuelo (a?) disappeared for a long time. She never checked back with us after dropping our ap, which is why we never got plates for it. Our entree's arrived, and were brought by someone completely different, who also didn't bother to clear away our obviously finished appetizer plate.

But enough whining, on to food.

I got the Tri-Corner Sandwich - roast beef and swiss cheese with Liberty Slaw, horseradish cream sauce and arugula served on herbed focaccia with fresh fruit or tavern fries $11.49.
DisneyworldAugust2010-2228.jpg

This sandwich was awesome. The roast beef was very moist, and the really strong horseradish cream was nicely balanced with the sweetness of the slaw. The fries also arrived piping hot and gloriously crispy on the outside, and light and fluffy on the inside.

Adam went with Pilgrims' Feast - traditional roast turkey with herb bread dressing, mashed potatoes and a garden vegetable $14.99.
DisneyworldAugust2010-2229.jpg

This is best described as Thanksgiving, in August, on your plate. Very moist turkey, delicious mashed potatoes, fresh green beans and gravy. This dish got a big thumbs up from the self proclaimed king of meat and potatoes.

It was really lucky that our food was all to our liking and nothing was wrong, because we never saw Consuela until after our entree's were finished and our plates were cleared. In fact, our plates were taken by the next door table's waitress, who had walked by on 3 different occasions after we had finished our meal, and I think felt sorry for us that our plates hadn't been cleared.

After another 5 minutes she finally reappeared to take our dessert order.

Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake -- vanilla cake with a gooey toffee filling, vanilla ice cream and caramel sauce $6.49 for me.
DisneyworldAugust2010-2231.jpg

Chocolate Brownie - dark chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream $5.99 for Adam.
DisneyworldAugust2010-2230.jpg

So, I will say that both desserts were very tasty. But mine was not a cake, and Adam's was not a brownie. Mine had the exact texture of a chocolate chip cookie when you bake them in a pan as bars instead of individual cookies, and Adam's was just like Devil's Food Cake; neither rich nor fudgy like you expect from a brownie, and his cake, despite being ala mode and covered in ice cream, was pretty dry.

The food here did the job, but service left a lot to be desired.

After lunch, we headed back to the hotel to dry out. It was HOT! On our way out we caught the tail end of this...

Up Next: Flashback: Day 1 of our 2010 Trip (Part 4)

So, after a nice rest at the hotel and a quick dip in the pool, we got ready to head off to dinner. Of course, as soon as we were ready to head to the bus stop, it started pouring (a recurring theme of the trip), but thankfully I had my trusty $15 poncho with me!

Dinner tonight was at...

DSC00261.jpg

And below is an excerpt from my dining report. I did edit this post, as we had a pretty icky experience there. It is not worth re-hashing as time has faded our scars from it. It was also just really gross, and this is supposed to be a happy report! I will sum it up with this: There was vomit (not ours) that went un-mopped up in the area where the servers are bringing out the food. We were at the very end of our meal when this happened. Obviously, it was a very off night. As I mentioned though, time has healed us, lol. Adam wants a delicious steak, so hopefully we get one on our next trip.

Leading up to our trip here, I really really talked this place up to Adam. I have always read good reviews on the food and service, and this restaurant definitely was on my "nothing to worry about" list leading up to our departure. Adam lives for steak and I booked a reservation here specifically with him in mind. Sadly we had a some major issues here, one with the food, and another with service, including a truly disturbing incident that I will describe as we go on here.

Things started off well enough, and we were in really high spirits leading up to this dinner:
DisneyworldAugust2010-2242.jpg

Our server's name was Ben, and he was really excellent. He had an awesome Brooklyn accent, and he was very attentive. He obviously had a lot of experience serving. I ordered the Pineapple Flambe cocktail, and Adam had a Whiskey Sour. In Wisconsin these almost always come served with pickled mushrooms as a garnish. When Adam requested them, Ben didn't know what they were and had honestly never heard this request before. This was really funny, and Ben earned major points by bringing out a little sampler of all the garnishes the bar did offer for Adam to choose from. At this time, Ben explained that he would be assisted that evening by another server, Joey, and that both would be taking care of us. This is where things kind of started to fall apart and get weird. I'm not sure what was really going on. Ben clearly wasn't training Joey or the other way around, because they never interacted with eachother. There was clearly no communication between the two of them about who was taking care of what, and as a result, our dinner was interrupted about 5 or 6 times for the same thing, once by Ben, and once by Joey. Not very enjoyable, but definitely a do able situation.

For apps, I had the Black and Blue Beef Tartare - White Truffle Dressing and Pea Tendrils $16.00
DisneyworldAugust2010-2243.jpg

I've had about a million beef tartares in my life...and I have to say, this one ranks very near the top. This was wonderfully seasoned and dressed. There was also a blue cheese cream with this that went beautifully with the beef. The tartare was special enough on its own that this dish would have been fine without it.

Adam had the Tomato and Buffalo Mozzarella. Heirloom Tomatoes, Basil, Garlic, warm Focaccia and aged Balsamic. $13.00
DisneyworldAugust2010-2244.jpg

Another really well seasoned dish. According to Adam, perfectly ripened tomatoes, the freshest mozzarella he has ever had, and wonderfully aged balsamic.

No one came to check on us after our appetizers were brought, Ben arrived first to clear the dishes, and Joey followed a few minutes later to clear the already cleared plates.

Now, it was about this time that the table next to us, a family of four, with a young child under two, and a boy about 8, really started to bother me. I want to preface by saying that I welcome children at all restaurants, not just at Disney World. However, I do feel that if your youngest is wailing so hard her face is beet red, and your oldest is repeatedly screaming about how he doesn't feel well, then I think its apparent to all involved (except the parents) that maybe you just need to give up on the night out. Both children continued screaming...but really, what can you do in this situation? We just moved on and did the best we could to tune it out.

For entree's, I had the Braised Beef Ravioli. Garden Vegetables, Blue Cheese Fondue, and Cabernet Jus $32.00

DisneyworldAugust2010-2245.jpg

Now, there were hardly any garden vegetables with this dish, but I can't say I missed them. There was some well seasoned wilted spinach over the top. This dish was absolute perfection. Well seasoned beef, tender, fresh pasta, creamy blue cheese fondue that had a nice sharpness to it.

Adam had Oak-fired Rib-Eye - 16-oz Boneless Rib-Eye, hand-breaded onion rings, and Red Wine Butter $43.00. This dish was supposed to come with onion rings, but came with mashed potatoes, with no explanation. Adam happens to prefer mash, so this wasn't a problem.

DisneyworldAugust2010-2246.jpg

This is were the food problem started. Adam ordered his steak medium rare. Before he even cut into it, I could tell it was rare. When he cut into the middle, it was deep red and ice cold. For a restaurant that specializes in steak, this really should not have gone without notice, especially when there was a chef standing right at the pass expediting the meal. We simply just sent it back, and when it came back the second time was done correctly. Now, about 2 inches into the steak, Adam encountered some tendon and gristle. So, we were presented with the age old question. Do you send the whole steak back and have them start again, or do you assume that its just that one little piece and that the rest will be fine and continue on. We unfortunately assumed in this case, and, well, we all know what happens then. At least 1/3 of his steak turned out to be completely inedible. By the end, he had quite a mound of unedible tendons piled up on his plate. Now this was not fat, but actual tendon that could not be chewed. I'm not even kidding when I say the pile was easily the size of one of my gigantic raviolis. This was just a really really terrible cut of meat. They should have been embarrassed to serve it, and obviously quality control was lacking here. Even though we had two waiters, no one bothered to check on us after the steak came back (which was brought by a food runner). Now, after you have finished eating the steak, you can't very well ask for another one, and we didn't. But I was really surprised when Ben came to clear the dishes and obviously saw a huge mound of something inedible sitting there, that he still didn't ask us how anything was. If we weren't on the dining plan, we would have handled things differently. We just resolved to the fact that what was done was done and moved on to dessert.

Split Seconds later, dessert arrived. I had the tasting of Pistachio. Chiffon Cake, gelato, valrhona chocolate mousse, and panna cotta.
DisneyworldAugust2010-2247.jpg

There was no panna cotta as described. The gelato was fabulous, as was the mousse. I'm not sure what it was that caused it, but the chiffon cake was extremely sour, and did not taste at all like pistachio. A so so dessert.

Adam had the creme brulee. It was a creme brulee. Nothing really special about it, but it did the job.
DisneyworldAugust2010-2248.jpg

After dinner, we headed back over to the Magic Kingdom, which was hosting Extra Magic Hours.

Word of warning, don't ride the tea cups after dinner.

Our last ride of the night was Mickey's Philharmagic, LOVED LOVED LOVED this!

Up Next: Movie Night #5 - Alice in Wonderland

So I really don't remember watching this movie as a kid. Its now obvious that I don't remember because I blocked it out. What a scary movie for kids! Not my favorite, but we still enjoyed our meal.

We don't have "fine china" so our Target dishes had to do for our tea party. We plan to register for some good stuff, but of course Crate & Barrell is discontinuing the china pattern that took me weeks of searching to find. :confused3

Place Setting

DSC01248.jpg

Sandwiches - Ham Salad, turkey and cheese, ham and cheese.

DSC01249.jpg

DSC01250.jpg

Lemon cake, and French donuts for dessert.

This was a perfect meal on this day because it was HOT outside, it was nice to not have to use the stove.

On or 2nd full park day, we are off to Adam's least favorite park. I absolutely adore Epcot. The food, the shopping, the snacking, the drinking. To be honest, most of the rides here do not appeal to me. I love Soarin, and Test Track is cool, but I just can't do Mission Space. Even the Green Version last time prooved to be a bit too much for me. Spaceship Earth is a must when we need to escape the heat, but no more Ellen's Energy Adventure please. Maybe its the fact that you know that you are trapped there indefinitely, I'm not sure. But just no.

Before we even get to Epcot, we will stop off at the Contemporary in order to fuel up for a day of....well....eating.

We decided to try out The Wave because the breakfast menu sounded quite tasty, and also because they offer a buffet, because lets face it, there was no way I could decide between the sweet potato pancakes and the eggs benedict with key lime hollondaise. They also offer cheddar cheese grits....oh my word can't wait!

We'll monorail it over to Epcot when we are done, and then make our way to Soarin at Rope Drop, then will probably check out the aquariums and Finding Nemo just for fun, and head over to Test Track, or really....whatever Ridemax tells me to do.

We will try and get any Future World attractions checked off our list before lunch time at Le Cellier. We dined here last time and had an amazing server, Jill. The food was also excellent, but I just couldn't justify spending the 2 credits to eat here.
I personally love the mushroom fillet, but the desserts are pretty hit or miss. I am not a huge fan of creme brulee.

After lunch we will probably take the opportunity to enjoy some of the entertainment around the World Showcase and then rest back at the hotel by the pool. We have a 7:00 reservation at Rose & Crown and I plan to try and wait for a waterside table to see illuminations.

After illuminations I plan to do a bit more shopping before we head back to the hotel...but shh....don't tell Adam this!

So after a lovely night at the Magic Kingdom, we were up once again bright and early to catch the first bus to the Magic Kingdom so we could hop on the monorail to the Poly.

A few pics...

DSC00294.jpg

DSC00295.jpg

We had a 7:30 AM breakfast at Kona Cafe, and here is the exerpt from my 2010 Dining Review.

We started Day 3 off with a bang with a much anticipated breakfast at Kona. We were planning on going to Magic Kingdom that day, so we made a 7:30 reservation, in hopes of making it to MK by rope drop. Should be no problem, right? Not if you have David for your server!

We arrived to the Polynesian by taking the 630AM bus to Magic Kingdom from the Pop, and then monorailing it over the Poly. Even with a delay on the monorail (the train in front of ours had technical issues) we made it in plenty of time and were checked in by 7:20.

When we were seated, we were the only people in the entire place, sort of weird feeling actually! David came right over to us, along with a trainee. She must have been in her first day of training, because David actually started off by explaining how to find out which dining plan we had on our cards. He recommended the Lilikoi juice (not that I would have chosen anything else!) so we both got that as our juice. Adam then got coffee as his second beverage choice, and I went with the Megaberry smoothie. Lilikoi juice was AWESOME! I was really excited to try and make some at home, but for some reason, its really hard to find Guava juice in WI, or at least by us, but I am still working on that. I also ordered the Samoan Benedict and Adam went with the Steak and Eggs. I had read on the DIS shortly before we left that the Samoan had been removed, and I was pretty sad about that, but was pleasantly surprised to see it had returned!

DisneyworldAugust2010-2060.jpg

The Somoan - poached eggs with Hollandaise served over smoked pulled pork hash $9.99

DisneyworldAugust2010-2068.jpg

Steak and Eggs - A char-grilled New York Strip steak served with two eggs, home-fries potatoes, and biscuit $14.49

In between ordering, and our entree's actually arriving, a group of about 8 was sat right next to us. 4 adults and 4 kids. And that is where the service took a big hit. Even with that large group, it was still just us the larger group and one table next to us, who had a different waiter.

I have to say, the Samoan was delicious. Egg was perfectly poached, warmed through, but the center was still runny, and really excellent hollandaise sauce. The real star of the dish was the pulled pork. It had an amazing smokey flavor, but was wonderfully moist and tender. At first I was a little put off by the greens for breakfast, but they mellowed out the really intense flavor of the pork and hollandaise. A+ on this dish.

The steak and eggs also got a big thumbs up, and Adam said this steak was more tender than last nights steak at the Yachtsman. Ouch. His eggs were also done perfectly. He ordered them over easy.

After we had finished eating, we sat. And we waited. And then we waited some more, all the while with dirty plates sitting on our table. David had made two trips to the big group behind us in the mean time. Now, I think we all agree, that any waiter worth his salt should be able to handle a group of 8 + a group of 2, especially when the restaurant was 90% empty. It was now a little past 8:15 and I was getting antsy, because I really really wanted to make rope drop. Right before I was about to say something, the check finally arrived, but he left our plates. :confused3 It was now after 8:30 and David still hadn't come to take our check back with our card in it, and I was getting super irritated. I suppose this was a little bit my fault for not just shoving the card in and handing it back to him before he had a chance to run off again. I finally gave in and asked the waiter that was at the table next to us if he would please take our check back and close it out, because we were really in a hurry. He was very kind and gracious, and even took our dirty plates back, without us asking.

David then reappeared and in a really snotty tone said "Sorrrrrry that it got busy guys". And that was it :sad2: I won't lie, I let out a little chuckle at that. Really? Busy with three tables in the restaurant? It wasn't like we were eating next door at Ohana. I didn't even go there with him. I was too mad that we weren't going to make it for rope drop.

Another real shame as far as service goes, because the food here is truly excellent. Absolutely would not hesitate to eat here again. But if they tried to give me David as a server again, I would request someone else.

So, since we were a little late for rope drop, we had to make a mad dash for our first ride of the day, which was Space Mountain. We were still able to ride it twice, with very minimal wait. Then we took a quick spin on Buzz Lightyear and once on Stitch's Great Escape. NO THANK YOU to those Chili Cheese burps! We then headed back to Adventureland for a nice leisurely stroll through here...

I really did not care for this at all, but it was nice to say that we did it once!

By now it was unreasonably hot, and we had for the most part gotten on all of our "must do" rides. So we stopped off for a quick snack...

And went back to the hotel for some pool time.

We had a nice rest at the hotel, and when nap time was over, it was time to head off to "lunch" at Wolfgang Puck Cafe in Downtown Disney. It was definitely late for a lunch (about 3:30 for our reservation) but our breakfast at Kona was so satisfying we didn't even notice.

Below is an exerpt from the 2010 Dining review on our experience at Wolfgang's.

I'm not going to lie, when we headed off for Wolfgang's after a GREAT day at Magic Kingdom, I was a little worried. I was getting really really frustrated with the service we had been getting and was beginning to think that Deluxe was not such a great idea if the service was going to continue. But, off we went anyway to Wolfgang Puck Cafe. Irvin was our server. All I have to say is, I  Irvin. Maybe I was giving off a disappointed vibe, or maybe he is just always fantastic, either way, he made our day. He had a great sense of humor, and was totally wonderful, start to finish.

We started off right away with drinks. Mango iced tea for Adam. Lemonade for me. I am a major sushi freak, so wanted to know how that was going to work with our plan. I was a little disappointed to find out that only the sushi sampler counted as an appetizer, despite the fact that most maki rolls here are less expensive than the appetizers themselves. No worry here though. I ordered the sushi sampler, and Adam ordered the crab cakes.

DisneyworldAugust2010-2069.jpg

Sushi Sampler - 2 pieces of nigiri sushi, 4 pieces of California roll and edamame $12.95

Um...YUM. Super fresh sushi. The tuna nigiri was like butter. Wonderful, delicious, meaty butter. But to die for. The avocados in the California roll were also perfectly ripened, not too firm, not too soft. Overall, a really really great start.

DisneyworldAugust2010-2070.jpg

Crab Cake - Sauteed Maryland Style crab cake with marinated tomato basil aioli, garnished with micro greens $15.95

Another great app. Good size crab cakes, loaded with tons of grab. There was very little breading on the inside of the grab cake, which is how they should be! Adam usually isn't a big crab lover, but really enjoyed these and the aioli really complimented them nicely.

Now, for entree's I really should have gotten more sushi, but the salmon pizza sounded really really good, and its not something I can get anywhere else, so I went with that. Sorry about the missing piece, I still wasn't used to taking pics!

DisneyworldAugust2010-2072.jpg

Wolfgang's Signature Smoked Salmon Pizza - Dill cream, red onion, chile oil and chives $17.95

The crust was a disappointment, very very dense, and not really soft, or crispy. Everything piled on top made up for it though. A nice dill sauce, that wasn't too overbearing on the dill flavor, if you know what I mean. Wonderful lox on top, and then red onion added a nice bite and crunch, while the chili oil added a nice very mellow heat afterwards. Yum! Something else I am going to have to try to make at home.

And for Adam, Chicken Alfredo.

DisneyworldAugust2010-2074.jpg

Chicken Fettuccine - Pan roasted chicken and pancetta in a parmesan cream sauce $19.95

Now, the menu says fettuccine, but this was obviously not. I was secretly thankful for that. Any type of pasta that you have to wind up, and Adam is bound to make a total mess of himself. This was another really good selection. The alfredo had a nice bite to it, but was not overwhelming, and the crispy pancetta went nicely with the soft pasta. The chicken was also moist, well seasoned and had excellent flavor.

For dessert, I wanted something light because I knew I would be getting my fill of them later that evening. I went with the no sugar added cheesecake mousse.

DisneyworldAugust2010-2077.jpg

Sugar Free Cheesecake Mousse - With raspberry puree and fresh berries $7.95

I am used to eating sugar free desserts as diabetes runs in my family, and this was really excellent. It was a cream cheese base, that was thinned out with something, maybe sour cream, because it was very light. Added to the cream chese was a lot of cinnamon, which was very borderline with too much cinnamon. They definitely try to compensate for the fact that there is no sugar with a lot of cinnamon for flavor. The raspberry puree was yummy too, but is tart due to there being no sugar.
I will say, if you don't normally eat sugar free dessert, this may not be a winner for you. But it was very light and delicious.

Adam went with

DisneyworldAugust2010-2087.jpg

Florida Key Lime Pie - Swiss meringue with a buttery graham cracker crust $7.95

Perhaps I am wrong, but I always thought key lime pie was a really light whipped filling with lime flavoring? This is 100% key lime cheesecake in my opinion. It is not meringue. It was cheesecake base. And a damn good one at that. I stole half of it, simply because I just couldn't set my fork down an stop. Great key lime flavor in the cheesecake and the most wonderful buttery delicious graham cracker crust. So much for keeping things light. :rolleyes1

This was a positively excellent meal start to finish. I can't wait to go back!

After our lunch, we decided to check out a few of the Downton Disney shops, since the last time we were here it was pouring rain, and found this little guy...

We wandered around for a few hours, before it was time to head back to the Magic Kingdom. We had booked the Wishes Dessert Party this evening, and didn't want to be late!

Here are a few pics of the Castle from the terrace.

Unfortunately our experience was not as nice as the view...

So, after I fabulous meal at Wolfgang's we headed back over to the Magic Kingdom for the day, knowing we had the dessert party ahead of us that night.

So, I will say this. I came into the party with an open mind. Right before we left there was a series of pretty unkind reviews about the party. That being said, if I can ever convince Adam to come to Disney again, we won't be repeating this event.

I thought the desserts were delicious, and the view was lovely. Seeing Tinkerbell fly overhead was an experience I won't soon forget.

I think the price was way out of line for this and I will explain why. We were one of the first people into the party, and our table was directly front and center. We got our first plates of dessert, and enjoyed them at our table. We got our photopass picture taken. It was nice and relaxing. I decided I wanted a few more chocolate covered strawberries. Something tragic must have happened while we had been away (like the end of civilization being announced) because I returned to an absolute disaster. There were trays of food knocked off their pedestals, food on the floor, people up at the buffet and cast members quickly trying to clean everything up. While I was at the buffet I was quite literally elbowed out of the way by a rather ravenous individual. It was just a really unpleasant experience. I felt like I was in the middle of a stampede and there was no need for it. We were told no less than 3 times that everything would be replenished, and as far as I could tell, it was.

And also, remember my really wonderful seat? Not so much when people start lining up in the rail 45 minutes before the show directly in front of you. Don't get me wrong, they had every right to do that, but the point of going to the dessert paty was so that you din't have to stand around jockeying for position. Maybe it was just the crowd that was there with us that night, I really don't know. But, really not a an experience I'm dying to repeat. Again, I thought the desserts were tasty and nicely portioned, but just overall, not for us. Only got 2 pics on my camera (shame again!) but here they are

DisneyworldAugust2010-2196.jpg

DisneyworldAugust2010-2196.jpg

So, needless to say, we won't repeat this again this trip. Maybe a few years from now. :confused3

Magic Kingdom closed right after the fireworks. We did stop off at the Main Street Bakery for breakfast items for the next morning. I got banana bread pudding, and Adam got a brownie with nuts.

Up Next: Movie Night #6 - Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

I am totally loving your updates.... Num on all the food. That's my favorite part - both of the girls and I are super excited for all of our ADRs. :)

D~

Since Snow White is German (I hope), this was a very easy movie theme night for me.

For our main course we had brats with kraut and spicy brown mustard, with a side of German potato salad.

DSC01253.jpg

And for dessert we had apple pie (which I most definitely did not bake) and ice cream. I may qualify as the worlds worst baker, and an upocomping post will try to prove that theory true to you.

DSC01254.jpg

It was a very tasty meal and was our last theme night before I left to go to New York for four looooooong months!

Up Next: Day 3 Plans

Now I know that Animal Kingdom gets very mixed reviews, but if it weren't for all the food in Epcot, and all of the thrill rides in Hollywood Studios, and all of the nostalgia in Magic Kingdom...this would be my favorite park. But for now it will have to settle for being my much adored 4th favorite park.

It is also our stop for Day 3 of our trip. We had a really tasty and wonderful breakfast at Boma last trip. But....its just really really really really out of the way. Last time our bus driver from Pop was kind enough to drop us off right at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Since the offerings are similar, we decided to go to Tusker House despite being less than enthused by character meals.

After breakfast it is off to where-ever Ridemax guides us...but the safari is a must, as is Exedition Everest, the Bugs Life 3D movie and Festival of the Lion King.

I also really love Dinosaur. Maybe its because it uses the same technology as the Indiana Jones ride at Disneyland (which I am obsessed with!).

I hope to have most of the major attractions out of the way in time for our lunch at Yak & Yeti, which was very satisfying last trip.

After lunch we should have enough time to catch a show (maybe Nemo?) before we catch the parade which we missed on our last trip.

We will head back to the hotel for a rest because we have a spectacular dinner planned.

I had the best sushi of my life at California Grill last year. And despite an incident last year where our server lectured me about not eating a slab of octopus, it was the one restaurant that we were both certain we needed to go back to.

We have a 7:20 PM reservation here with Wishes at 8 o'clock.

None of the parks are hosting extra magic hours in the evening, so after dinner it will be back to the hotel for some much needed rest.

AK is my 4th favorite park too...I want to like it more, but I just enjoy the other three more!

I'm very excited for our dinner at California Grill...I hope I don't get lectured there though! I'll be avoiding the sushi, so hopefully I'm in the clear!

Cali Grill was such a highlight for us food wise. I ordered a sushi platter that had a combination of rolls and nigiri. Well, one was octopus...I ate EVERY morsel except for the octopus, and let me tell you, that plate was huge! Then she came back and lectured me for not finishing the whole thing! I said that I detested octopus, and she told me that it was an insult to the chef that I didn't finish it. It ended with me having to actually tell her to take the plate away.

So...if you get Erica as a server...run! Otherwise I don't think there is anything on the menu there you won't enjoy.

Since Hollywood & Vine did not appeal to us, we chose to have breakfast back in our room. Nothing fancy, just stuff we had picked up the night before from the Main Street Bakery using snack credits. I had a banana bread pudding and Adam a walnut brownie, with coffee in our refillable mugs.

We made it to Hollywood Studios just in time for the opening ceremony. Toy Story Midway Mania was closed, but the park still seemed pretty busy. There were lots of groans from the crowd, so apparently most had not researched this before hand.

It was pretty overcast that day, which was great at keeping that sweltering feeling away.

And with that....we were off!

To Tower of Terror, my all time favorite ride (besides when they had Space Mountain with the Red Hot Chili Peppers music). A friend of mine and I rode this 11 times in a row at California Adventure. I just love everything about it.

No time for pictures here as we were on a mission.

After Tower of Terror we headed for the Rock N' Roller Coaster. This was still a walk on. I had never rode on this before and I loooooooooved it! So much fun. When we were here there was a rumor this would be turned into a Jonas Brothers coaster. I would seriously boycott all things Disney if this would be the case. That. Serious.

DSC00391.jpg

Please ignore my ridiculously large hair. The humidity did a number on it. Thankfully I got it straightened when we got home, so we won't have to worry about it on the next trip!

Look what Adam found...
DSC00392.jpg

Keep dreaming babe....

After walking around for a bit, we decided to head to our lunch at 50's Prime Time Cafe, and just in time. As soon as we walked in the door, the skies let loose and it began to rain...again.

So day 4 was our very first day at Hollywood Studios . We had no breakfast reservation for that day, because we used some snack credits at the Main St. Bakery the night before. I had the warm banana bread pudding, and Adam had the Walnut Brownie ($3.99 each). Sorry, no pics. Both were delicious, even mine which was obviously no longer warm. I could have eaten banana bread pudding every day if allowed.

Anywho...we had an 11:15 reservation at 50's, which happened to be right when it started to downpour (again!).

Our server was Tom, and he really wasn't very good, but the server at the table next to us really made up for him.

For starters, Adam had this:
DisneyworldAugust2010-2296.jpg

Chicken Noodle Soup - Hearty mixture of chicken, vegetables, and egg noodles $6.49

This is probably one of the best chicken noodle soups I have ever had (except for ma's of course). Great chicken flavor, tender veggies and well seasoned.

And I had this:
DisneyworldAugust2010-2295.jpg

Aunt Annie's Seafood Salad - Lump Blue Crab, Bay Scallops, and Shrimp tossed in Citrus Vinaigrette served on seasonal Greens $9.99

All I can say is YUMMMMMMM! I'm actually salivating remembering this dish. If you don't like seafood you will hate this, but if you do, its really a great preparation. The vinaigrette on this was light and refreshing and the lemon squeezed over the top really enhanced the seafood.

And for our main course, Adam had this:
DisneyworldAugust2010-2299.jpg

Caesar Salad with Chicken - Romaine lettuce tossed with Caesar dressing, grated parmesan cheese, garlic croutons topped with sliced grilled chicken $12.99

There isn't too much to say about this dish. The greens were crisp and well washed, the dressing was good. Pretty hard to screw up a Caesar salad.

And I had this:
DisneyworldAugust2010-2297.jpg

Cousin Eric's Char-grilled Chicken Sandwich - marinated chicken breast topped with cheddar, grilled onions, barbeque sauce, lettuce and tomato on a Kaiser roll, with a house salad or french fries $13.49

Another stellar dish. I don't know what the marinade used for this was, but it was good. The chicken had excellent char flavor, and was moist and wonderful. Well carmelized onions, great BBQ sauce and fresh bun. I also got a caesar salad and pickle with this. Really nice lunch here.

And for dessert...I forgot to take pics. Really sorry about this! Somehow, I did get pics of us with the dessert menu:

DisneyworldAugust2010-2301.jpg

Adam got a hot fudge sundae $4.99. Again, not something you can really screw up, but it was yummy and came with all the traditional fixins.

I had the No Sugar Added Cheesecake - topped with fresh whipped cream and strawberry sauce $5.49. I actually think this was a raspberry sauce. There is no crust on this, just cheesecakey goodness. I have to say, as far as sugar free desserts go, this is a really great option and was tasty and a HUGE portion.

Like I said, our service here was really really lacking, but the food was a great rebound. I would definitely go here again for just food alone.

And after lunch, we went to see the Beauty and the Beast show, one of my all time favorites!

And then off to the Little Mermaid...

DSC00433.jpg

DSC00437.jpg

Before we knew it, we were headed to dinner at Mama Melrose. We had booked the Fantasmic Package, so dinner was just after 4.

Now, I booked the Fantasmic Package because I was basically told by a friend that you either booked it, or waited in line 2 hours for a decent seat. Having seen Fantasmic already at Disneyland, I really had no desire to wait 2 hours. So, we selected Mama Melrose. This is the only restaurant that we actually waited a long time past our ADR time for (like 25 minutes). We also had one of the latest seatings for the package, 4:45.

For those of you that don't know, the Fantasmic package includes a NA beverage, app, entree and dessert. In retrospect, since we were on the Deluxe dining plan, this may not have been the best use of a TS credit. However, we had a decent meal here. Nothing over the top, but it was definitely sufficient.

Adam got the:
DisneyworldAugust2010-2351.jpg

Mozzarella and Tomatoes - with marinated sweet onions, balsamic drizzle, extra virgin olive oil and fresh sweet basil $7.99

(If you aren't sensing a theme here, you will be soon. Adam is now officially an expert in the Mozz and Tomato apps all over the world. If you want to know where the best one is, he can tell you. I of course won't go near a tomato, so I can't tell you how this was, but he did clean his plate when he was done.

I had this:
DisneyworldAugust2010-2352.jpg

Mama's Antipasto for Two - selection of meats, cheeses, and marinated vegetables $14.99

To be very specific, this was a selection of prosciutto, salami, roasted red peppers (which tasted JUST like the ones you get from a jar), asparagus, pickled mushrooms (see, they do exist!) several varieties of olives (which were pitted) and pistachios. I did not care for the pistachios, they were somewhat mushy from whatever they had been tossed in, but everything else was tasty. However, I like meats and cheeses and pickled things of all varieties.

Adam went with the:
DisneyworldAugust2010-2354.jpg

for an entree.

Charred Sirloin Steak - gorgonzola butter on roasted red pepper polenta, grilled asparagus and red wine reduction $20.99

This actually did not have any polenta with it, but rather potatoes. I was extremely disappointed in this because I love polenta, but Adam was thrilled. He is not sophisticated enough for polenta. He said that this steak was superior to the one he had at Yachtsmans (ouch!).

I had this:
DisneyworldAugust2010-2353.jpg

Which I can't find on any of the online menus. It was a shrimp and artichoke pizza. It was pretty bland, and greasy. Not in a drizzled with olive oil kind of way, just kind of yuck greasy. I love shrimp, and I love artichokes though, so it ended up being a "so-so" for me.

I forgot pics of dessert (I really do get better, I promise!)
but I went with the Crema Limone - no sugar added lemon custard topped with fresh whipped cream and berries $6.99. This wasn't what I was expecting. Despite the menu cleary saying custard, I was expecting more of like a lemon meringue pie/lemon curd type thing. This is lemon custard, and for having no sugar added, I found it incredibly sweet. It also only came with one lonely blackberry on the top. If there were more berries it would have helped to tame the sweetness. Overall, not something I will repeat.

Adam had Gelato $4.49. He really is used to rich and thick custard from here, so he learned quickly that gelato is not his thing. I tasted it, and it was fine. He would have enjoyed it more if he went with a flavor other than vanilla :confused3

That being said, this restaurant is insanely, almost unbearably loud. This was compounded by the fact that we sat next to a family with a young child that had obviously reached his limit and was screaming. This was a problem that you apparently solve in a restaurant by screaming back at your child "Stop Screaammmmming!!!!" It was needless to say, bad. But we also had a very nice family from Canada on the other side of us with perfectly well behaved children, so you win some you lose some. In my book, Mama's gets a B for food, and a D- for atmosphere. We also were exhausted, and Adam said he had zero interest in seeing Fantasmic, so we ended up giving our vouchers to two people we saw waiting in a ridiculously long line at 6 oclock. I couldn't believe that 2 hours before showtime (on a night with two showings) that the line had stretched to the end of Hollywood Blvd. Better luck for us next time.
