He went to the doctor yesterday.... it's a head and chest cold type thing- the doc said it was viral and would last 4-6 WEEKS!!! I just hope it doesn't go through the rest of the family- any suggestions on how to keep us healthy?? I'm pushing the OJ (the juice, not the murderer) and a multi vitamin. All suggestions are appreciated.

My MIL swears by these things called Zicam and Airborne. I think they are both homeopathic (non medicated) but she starts them every time she feels a cold coming on and they help her tremendously. We are also going in two weeks and I sat by someone at church on Sunday that now has a high fever - I am just waiting...

The best advise would be to wash your hands often. Hand washing is the single best preventative measure you can take to prevent the spread of viruses.

I woke up sick Sunday morning and it's not getting better. We leave Friday night.

Cold medicine isn't helping..i might just try Zicam. Can't make me more sick then I am already.

If you are flying and your husband is still sick do yourself and him a favor. Take some sudafed or like before you board the plane. This past September I had a bad sinus/cold thing going on and my ears were plugged for a whole day after I arrived at Disney because of it. On the plane ride home I probably overdosed on Sudafed (took alot of them between Orlando and Atlanta and then home). My ears never suffered this way.

Good Luck,
Lisa

IS he coughing too? My kids have had a cough/cold for 2 weeks now. It started as croup but now it's a cough and stuffy nose. My baby has an ear infection too and my poor mom is now coughing badly too. I pray we all are well for our trip. I think sunny Florida will help everyone too.

The sudafed while flying is an important tip. Even if you have very minor sinus trouble it can lead to a huge amount of pain during flight. Remember to take it prior to take off and landing, depending on your flight time. My DH always takes sudafed before every flight (he travels a lot on business) because the one time he didn't, he had horrible pain for landing.

I also think that airborne is helpful for cold symtoms. Oprah mentioned it on her show, so it became hard to find for awhile our stores kept running out. I find it at Target. It is powerpacked with vitamins and its' effervescent tablets are designed for faster absorbtion.

Last Feb. my DH was sick on our vacation, and it was a real bummer. He stayed behind in the hotel room while we went to the parks. He was thankful (in a way) that it happened when he could totally relax, rather than feeling he was missing important meetings at work. Ah well.

That washing hands advice is very important, along with plenty of water and healthy eating choices!
Good luck! :flower:

As someone who always used to get a sinus infection when flying (until I asked a flight attendant) I SUGGEST and swear by vicks nasal spray right before take off and right before landing it would releive symptoms of the cold that might linger and will also prevent pain and future colds. IT REALLY WORKS! and feels sooooo good to clear out. TWO SQUIRTS and your good to go. Also AIRBORNE is something I have heard alot about and have a co-worker that swears by it! Good luck hope your all healthy for the trip!

I have a suggestion for you - and my belief is that it works - I'm proof!! :goodvibes

My DS came home from preschool from a cold.... then just a couple days later DH also had it. I started to panic. Whenever a cold comes into our house I get it and I get it good - gets me down for a week solid in bed. UGH. So as soon as I hear "I have a cold" or "I'm not feeling well" I go straight into mega panic mode.

My mother suggested that I try COLD FX (it's a ginseng based pill - working to stimulate your immune system). She had read about it, not tried it. You can take it when you are sick (directions on what to take and when) or use it as a preventative measure if you are worried about getting sick. As soon as my mom suggested it, I rushed out to buy it, started taking one in the a.m and one at night every day. Cross my fingers but the sickness has left our house and I am healthy! That's truly a first.

My brother then got sick (during all of this) and he also decided to try it. Usually when he gets a cold it turns immediately into a sinus infection. He took the recommended dose for when you are sick and was well again in a day or two.

You can check out the website www.coldfx.com to find out more about it and to make sure of course that you are okay to take it (it's for people who are healthy otherwise).

I am a believer - it definitely saved me.

It's not for children under 12.

Okey dokes - that's my 2 cents. Hope everyone gets well soon. :goodvibes

My doctor recommends using purell hand sanitizer more than washing hands. She said if you're hands aren't soiled....use purell. It is more effective than hand washing because no one washes their hands long enough to really kill the germs.

I have a pump container of purell and soap in both bathrooms and kitchen.

I also use the lysol or clorox disinfecting wipes on all doorknobs, light switches, phones, remote controls, fridge handles.......really anything that gets touched frequently.

We leave in 3 weeks. And we tend to stay home a lot more a couple of weeks prior so we don't increase our chances of catching something. We especially avoid the play areas in the mall. There always seems to be a least one child coughing and wiping their snotty noses on everything ;)

I'll also second the airborne tablets. I take one as soon as I feel any congestion or anything that I'm worried about getting worse......it usually helps!

I hope the rest of your family wards off what you dh has.....and I hope he feels better too!
Good luck

Don't laugh. I had a viral thing years ago and could not shake it. Terrible congestion, headaches cause of the sinus pressure, cough, just exhausted.

A co worker told me you have to "sweat it out". I'm not one for home remedies, but I was desperate cause my doc wouldn't give me an antibiotic cause it was viral.

You take a hot, hot bath and soak in it before bed. When you get out, you slather Vicks vapor rub on your chest and--this is key--on the soles of your feet. Then you put on your warm jammieS and --this is also key--thick WHITE socks. Get into bed and cover up and go to sleep. If you get hot and sweaty--its working. Now, I always add a little Nyquil chaser to that remedy so I can sleep though the night--but it really does work.

Tell your hubby we hope he feels better!

Airborne, plain and simple, every three hours until it's gone then twice a day to maintain!

"sweat it out"

My DH swears by this. All he does is put on a pair of sweats, wrap up in a blanket and he's well by morning. I cannot do it. I'd have a migraine before I sweated out the illness, but we've been married over 15 years and he's been sick, maybe twice, where sweating it out did NOT work.

We are fighting it all here, too. We came down with the runny noses last week. I was in bed with all my joints aching. Ryan got a cough. Now Sean and I have the drainage again. I've got a dry scratchy throat and pain behind my eye. Don't seem to have fever, though. Getting ready to take more Niquil.

Gotta run.

OMG I so feel for you. Most important. Make sure the whole family is obsessive about hand washing. Tons of germ gel in between. Remind family members to avoid touching their eyes, nose, and mouth ,This is how most viruses enter your body. Lower the temp in the house the warmer the environment the faster germs breed. Keep a sanitizing solution of bleach and water and keep disinfecting kitchen table between meals faucet handles toilet any surface that can be safely wet down etc. When bleaching please take precaution not to get on cloth furniture, carpet, and good clothing. It will remove or alter the color of such things. I hope these tips help. Good Luck!

Yup....we leave in 22 days, my oldest son has a temp and bad cold, just waiting for his brother and sister to get it. Rather have them sick now then when we are off on vacation....we'll see :worried:

Besides good hand washing, lots of vit C - the major thing to remember is getting adequate rest & preventing exhaustion. Medical studies show that lack of sleep & fatigue lowers your immunity. Being well rested will help keep your immunity high for fighting infections & recovering from them.

I feel for you! Our last trip which was awhile ago, we spent alot of time in the first aid rooms at the parks with sick kids. It's no fun for anyone to be sick on vacation. Now we have another chance to go and I'm terrified of a repeat performance!!!

I have used the Airborne and it seems to work. How or why, who knows and who cares as long as it does. Also my dad used to do the sweating it out thing and that always worked for him. Good luck, and be well!! :wizard:

just because he said 4 to 6 weeks to get rid of it, dosent necessarily mean 4 to six weeks of feeling like garbage. Just make sure he gets plenty of rest, and follow all the other good suggestions about handwashing, lysol, etc, to protect the rest of the family. Chances are he will have a lingering cough, but still feel up to the trip.

Incidentally, I picked up something that sounds very similar on our last day at disney Nov 5th, felt awful for a week, now feel almost back to normal, but with a lingering cough. We leave for our next trip Thanksgiving day....

I am currently taking Cortisone as well as my 3rd lot of antibiotics for a sinus infection that I can't seem to shake off. I am now in my 4th week of being ill...and getting very edgy....3 weeks before we leave! My ears "play up" when I fly anyway, let alone with a sinus infection.
I Googled "Airborne" and unfortunatly it is not available in Australia and they are starting international shipping in 2006, too late for me!!!
I am determined I am going to get on that plane.
Good luck Mermaid02 and all the other sickies out there....let's all think positive thoughts! :goodvibes
