My son will be turning 12 while we're in Disney World in May and he's requested San Angel Inn for his birthday dinner. We've never eaten there before.

My first question is does anyone know if they do anything special for birthdays?

Also, what are the tastiest things to order? I've read mixed reviews of the quality of food (but ds still wants to eat there), but I've not read what specific items people have enjoyed.

Thanks so much! Oh...if we wait (we have Ps's) what are our chances of getting a seat near the water?

1) For us, they did. They gave us each free dessert (our birthdays are the 26th, 27th of September, back to back!) with candles - peanut butter bread pudding.

2) We're not thrilled with this restaurant (we get much, much better authentic Mexican food here in east Orlando), but the dishes I've enjoyed the most are the ones off the chef's specials area. Unfortunately they change all the time so I can't recommend specific ones, but those are the best bet. Stay away from the queso fundido and the nachos: tiny tiny tiny tiny portions. I was appalled at how small they were for the price, even at Disney.

3) Water seats: what time is your PS? You'll want to show up 30-45 min early, especially if it's at a busy time. We had a 4:30 PS and had no trouble, but it was at the end of Sept, on a Monday. Having a PS alone won't really affect if you get a water seat or not.

Thank you! Our ps is for 5:45. So if we get there early we have a better chance at water seats?

We ate at San Angel Inn last year in June and we not at all pleased. The food was not all that great and the service was awful.

I didn't think it was any better than one of the local mexican food eateries around here. I thought the food was good though.

I always find it odd when I read bad reviews because when DBF and I went last June it was fantastic. We still rave about how wonderful it was. DBF says it was the best steak he ever had and anytime San Angel Inn is mentioned I immediately squeak "mole poblano" -- my favorite dish on the menu (warning: its a wee spicey!!).

We plan on going again this next trip. I recommend PSes. It was a stroke of luck that we got in, the two of us, at about 8:00pm. They almost turned us away but then discovered they had an empty table for two. It was a fanastic night!!

1) something special for special occassion.
Of course they will!....a) make sure when you make ps that this is noted.
b)when you go to the poduim, make sure you communicate ths, c) it wouldn't hurt to try to call them directly before you arrive to tell them about this event.

2)"whats tasty to order", well, that's a personal choice. All I can say is that I've never had anything that I didn't like! The atmosphere is wonderful! :) I suggest if your group is 4 or less, that when you get to the podium, you as to be seated by the water, and specifically say you're willing to wait for an opening! Then go ride the ride with a pager, and enjoy the show! :):)

I'm with TrickyFish; we always have had wonderful meals at San Angel Inn, and I used to always get the mole poblano, until I learned how to make a pretty fair version on my own, so I finally started sampling some other items on the menu, and I've enjoyed them all.

I know many people on this forum are not fans of the food here but it is one of my favorites!! No experience on the birthday part.....if you are willing to wait for a table I am sure you could get a "water view" but really the atmosphere is excellent just about anywhere in that room. I am so hooked on the "Plato Nationial"(sp??) that I have never ventured beyond. It is a little sampling of several items and I just love it!! The whole feeling is very festive and fun and really does transport you to Mexico!! ::MinnieMo

Thanks everyone. I did mention his birthday when I made the PS.

He's chosen this restaurant just because of the atmosphere and I think he really wants a seat by the water. I'll try all your suggestions. Thank you so much!

The traditional sopa is HEAVEN!!!! It's under the "appetizers", and it is small (about the size of an english muffin), but for a lunch or light dinner it is wonderful!!!

Anything with their "shredded chicken" is AWESOME!!!
