2 Officers shot in Dallas tonight during police protest rally

I'm seeing a lot of chatter in various places celebrating the murders of these police officers or at least trying to justify it. I find that disturbing. I'm not saying that anyone is responsible for anything but a little more compassion would be nice.

Anyone who celebrates or tries to justify the killing of these police officers needs to understand that logic makes it perfectly okay for police officers to open fire on random African Americans because some of them are violent criminals and therefore killing or wounding any of them balances the scales. Gosh oh golly gee, that sounds like the kind of world I want to live in. Who knew the Middle East was the model America should have been aspiring to?

I've been following a conversation at a normally peaceful place where one poster keeps maintaining that all police officers are murderers and deserve whatever they get. That is the most extreme case and hard to understand.

You cannot reason with this mindset. It is the same kind of person who insists that all peoples in cities are drugged and convicts, all rock bands have fried brains, you get the picture. I could go on and on but it gives me a headache

I was watching our local FOX4 news last night when all of this was going on. One of their reporters interviewed a man that had helped organize the protest rally/march. I've only seen the interview once but the while man he thought it was sad that there was violence at a peaceful rally he was not sympathetic that officers were being targeted.

I got a WFAA news alert on my cell phone and the name of the shooter that the police tried to negotiate with last night has been released. They still have a female suspect in custody. The guys in the car were released as was a third suspect. They have also released the names of three DART officers that were injured as well as the one that was killed. As far as I know none of the Dallas police officer's names have been released.

Wow! Talk about adding fuel to the flame. I just turned on the Today Show to see a black actress saying the solution to this violence is to punish a police officer as an example and to make black people feel better about being heard. In disgust I turned to CNN and they are still showing the upset girlfriend in Minnesota using emotion to further inflame everything. Please keep in mind that we have still not heard anything from the police about why they shot. This is so irresponsible to keep showing her statements without presenting the other side. I am not saying the police were right, just that some people are judging without even hearing the other side. Further evidence that nothing has been learned from the carnage in Dallas.

You left out a large part of the conversation. I do think perhaps her one sentence was poorly worded, particularly if taken out of context, but your interpretation of that interview is a lot more inflammatory, I believe,
than what she meant. I knew her late brother and father were cops, so I wanted to hear the whole thing. Here it is.

Taking things out of context to make them inflammatory and passing it around is our standard MO now. That's part of the reason things only get worse. It's too easy to vilify others ago you can dismiss what they are saying.
I thought her full statement and thoughts behind it were actually well said. Of course that's because I actually listened to her whole statement.

I listened to her whole statement. It was irresponsible to call for punishment against police officers in light of what had just happened in Dallas which the shooter blamed on the need to take action against police. We have had enough of those type statements. We have a terrible pattern of people hearing half of a story and calling for the heads of police without hearing all of the evidence. They get so worked up that they disregard any other evidence. In our society we turn these cases over to the courts to decide. You may not like the decisions but we are bound by that system.

I did not hear her call for everyone to wait for all evidence and due process before deciding they need to see police officers punished. Anything she said to excuse that line of thought was lost on me.

Did we not learn anything from the stupid story in Ferguson? Let an investigation happen before you leap to the tune of racist cops killing at will.
These officers were shot within earshot of the calls of "No justice, No peace"
You may want to update the thread title.

What law would you want them to pass? It's already illegal in Texas to shoot police officers. Federal lawmakers don't need to throw in their $0.02.
I'm not the poster you quoted but here's a thought. Do people really need semi-automatic weapons? I believe they were saying that's what the sniper(s) had and we know the Pulse guy had one. Is it possible for Americans to protect themselves and hunt and do anything else guns are supposed do with guns that cannot shoot hundreds of bullets in a matter of minutes? That might be a law that could be considered.

Many of these rallies are peaceful only because the police are not allowed to get out the gear to stop the peaceful ralliers from screaming terrible profane things in their faces.
I think the police at these rallies, which are continuously called defending the protesters, should be noted for what they are really there for. It is to keep the peaceful protesters from getting further motivated into mob mentality, i.e. destruction of property and blocking of traffic.

That makes sense to me, and if they let citizens vote I would probably vote in favor of that. But I still doubt that anyone who would disobey the murder laws would follow the laws on semi-automatic weapons.
