hi all, my family and a few friends plan on going to WDW next year as a party of 10 but have run into a predicament. the only 2 bedroom (as far as I know) that could fit us would be a 2 bedroom lock-off at VGF. while the price is still steep, would it be a lot more economic than staying in a 3 bedroom villa at, say, SSR or OKW? we will probably be going

i was wondering if anyone here has stayed in a 2 bedroom lock-off at VGF with 10 people. we'll be mostly teenagers with a few 21+ parents so i don't think we'll have a problem fitting everyone in the room.

also do military discounts apply to 2 bedroom villa lock-offs, unlike 3 bedrooms?

I have no idea about discounts, but just wanted to mention that 2 bedroom lock offs at VGF could be hard to book with cash. You might be able to book a dedicated 2 bedroom with cash, but they only sleep 9 people. The reason they are hard to book is that for the lock off, you need a studio and a 1 bedroom at VGF. There are only a small number of studios for dvc members to book, and they book really fast. Not sure if Disney will have one for you to book with cash. I would have a backup plan!

3BR villas are also referred to as Grand Villas. They sleep up to 12 people and are absolutely amazing. But, amazing comes at a steep price. In DVC terms, they are nearly double the number of points needed for a 2BR villa at the same resort. It is also extremely rare for them to be available to book for cash thru Disney.

In addition to the occupancy limits, you will want to consider the bed configuration in each villa. Most grand villas have one king bed in the master bedroom, 4 queen beds (2 in each of the other bedrooms) and a queen sleeper sofa in the living room. With a party of 10, people are going to be sharing beds.

I think that you might want to consider 2 family suites at either AoA or ASMu as a more affordable alternative.

If you plan to stay in a 2BR LO, two people will need to sleep on the little pull down beds. Those are ok for little kids, but most teens would probably be too big for it unless they are small. We have stayed in a dedicated 2BR before at VGF and loved it. We are a family of four.

Keep in mind that in a 2BR, you will only have 2 bathrooms unless you stay at BLT or Kidani. Those 2BR have an extra full bathroom, for a total of 3. Ten people sharing two bathrooms is asking a lot IMHO.

With 10 adult-sized bodies, I'd book a Grand Villa. If none are available through Disney, you could rent points to reserve one. Point rentals are non-refundable. We stayed with a party of 10 in a GV at BLT. I would not have wanted anything smaller for that number of people.

Another option would be to break up the party into separate rooms. If a GV is out of your budget, separate rooms might be a good idea.

Book several rooms for your group. It will provide the separation you might find you are missing by all staying in on place.

we prefer to have a kitchen when we go as it saves money for some meals. i don’t see my family wanting to stay in multiple studios

you will need a 2 br and a studio, which is still much less than a GV. I did this at both VGF and BCV for 12 people but 3 were younger kids

thanks so much for the information! 6 of us are teens and the other 4 are 21+ adults. 2 bedrooms are not out of our budget, but spending twice as much for a GV seems much more out of our budget, considering they don’t qualify for military discount. like i said in another comment we would consider staying in separate studios/rooms, but access to a kitchen is very important to us as it saves a lot for meal costs

i never though about booking a 2 bedroom and a studio. would the chances of both rooms being close be high at most resorts? i know studios at VGF sell very fast which could perhaps lead to one room being far from another

While there is no guarantee, in the case of VGF they ended up quite close on the same floor, at BCV they were right next to each other. We were splitting stays so in addition to a written request, I was at each resort by 6:30 am to reinforce the request (and chat with the check in CMs for a while)

It would make any other location requests more difficult

They don’t assign rooms when they are booked. They are assigned closer to arrival. Having 2 rooms close to one another is a request, never a guarantee. You could be in different wings, on different floors or in larger resorts, even in different buildings. The room assigners do their best with whatever is open for your arrival dates.

VGF is small compared to other DVC resorts and TBH, you will have a tough time booking any of the VGF villas with a cash discount. You might want to explore other possibilities. There is a glut of DVC points flooding the system for at least the next couple of years due to the COVID-19 shutdown. Owners are going to be using their points to pretty much book up all of DVC. Not much will be going to the cash side for breakage...especially VGF villas.
