Well, we're going over to DL today to buy a DVC contract. And we're contemplating the idea of buying (2) 150 point contracts so that we would have the second one to rent out when not used. My DH is thinking of it as an investment, and I just like the idea of having more points. When not using your points, how easy is it to get your points rented out?

I told him if we weren't going to have the 2 contracts, then I would want to start with 200 points.

What do you all think?

I have always had an easy time renting points, when I needed to. That being said, I don't think any timeshare should be looked at as an investment in anything other than pre paid vacations. I do think two 100 point contracts are a good idea. Easier to sell one if need be, or divide among children in the future. Good luck with your purchase!

I would do two contracts of 150 this way if you want to sell one you can still have points. It also doesn't affect anything regarding reservation or banking and borrowing

I'd do 2 contracts as well, making sure they're at the same resort for the same use year. If you're going to visit every year or so, sometimes during the more expensive seasons, and you want to stay in roomy accomodations, then 300 points is not out of line.

We just sent in our paperwork last week and are new owners too! We were thinking the same thing as you are, but financially we could not afford anything but the 150 buy in.

BUT, if we were able to, we would have bought 2 150 point contracts. A couple of reasons. If we needed to sell them for any reason, the smaller contracts (25-100) sell much quicker and for a much higher price than larger point contracts. Also, if you have children or want to leave it to more than 1 person 2 contracts is the way to go.

We did decide on the 150 point package and then adding on smaller contracts later (25-50 points) If they get a DVC @ the Contemporary or Animal Kingdom Lodge (as rumored) or even Disneyland we will definitely be adding on.

Anyway, since we were debating at length just like you, thought I'd lend by .02.

BTW, a little early but, Welcome Home!

I am wondering if you will get a better deal at DL than the current referral offer!?!?!? We are heading to DL this weekend, but will be calling DVC before then, to try to take advantage of the referral offer so many kind DISers have posted.

PLEASE let me know what offer you get onsite at DL. I've often wondered where the DVC vans take you at DL? I assume they just show you the current resorts, so you can see how you can use your points out here.

Thanks for letting me know how it goes.

Thank you all. I hope DH will start thinking your way. I just like the idea of having more points without having to bank them to get a nice room. KWIM? My DH is happy in a studio, but I (the one who has to spend hours in the laundromat) think a 1BR is much better! We'll see how it goes and I'll let you all know tomorrow what we decided!

PattiPB - As far as DVC at DL goes, they only have a doll house model and there aren't any specific DL special offers. The model wasn't an issue for us since we toured BCV and VWL 3 years ago. The center is on the South side of DL Hotel outside the Bonita building. I don't know how they take guests there since I hoofed it from Main Street all the way through DD and then the hotel. I think if you park at DD lot, you would probably be able to get there pretty easy. I can tell you more after today!!!!

I'm already looking forward to my first trip home!!!

DVC is not an investment unless you think of prepaid vacations as an investment in your family. We spend more money on vacations now that we have DVC. Plus we have a lot of fun. It would be a lot of work to me to try to rent out points on a regular basis. Plus, if you make it a regular business, Disney can get touchy about it. There is something in the contract about conducting a business with DVC. I'd use it and forget about the renting. Too much work and these renters seem to be getting fussier and fussier. And they want everything for little or nothing. They want budget vacation cost and deluxe lodging.

I would purchase a smaller one though in addition to the 150 points. Then you can sell it if you need to.

Don't buy a lot of extra points. It doesn't make sense to buy 300 when you only need 200. Of course you can buy 150 + 50 if you want.
