***1st Week of December Thread ADR Plans, Park Hours, and dealing with Pop Warner***

Hi everyone!

This is a total change of topic :), but I was hoping some of you could help answer some (really stupid!) questions for me! Since I am so new to planning a wdw trip, I'm just trying to be as prepared as I can...
I know a lot of you are waiting for the Star Wars dessert package, correct? and RoL? Are these events that are NOT offered every night? I know RoL is still tentative, but I know people have mentioned that some of their plans are not definite because they're waiting for these dates/shows.

We won't be visiting HS this trip, but I'd love to see RoL if it is running....I know there is a lot that isn't known about RoL, but I figured I'd ask if anyone had an idea of what we could maybe expect based on past new attractions:

will it likely run every night?
does anyone know if this is an event that we will need to purchase tickets for when dates are released?
will it be an event like the Candlelight Processional where you can get a dining package for better seats, but everyone is still allowed to attend?

Thanks!

ROL should run every night if it is up and running. I think people's plans are up in the air because they have already determined they aren't interested in seeing JB so they aren't sure if they'll be staying late at AK or not. Also, JB is only scheduled through Labor Day weekend right now, so speculation is that there might be NO nighttime show at AK for awhile (though there have been rumors both ways on that).

ohh! I see. That's makes sense. We are not park hopping, and so I always forget that people go back and forth. If nothing is going on at AK, people of course want to book something elsewhere. Got it :) Thanks for explaining :)

I also posted this on the restaurant board this morning. it is long but I think it is a good perspective when dealing with mixed reviews on places, or the notion that everything is going downhill at disney. I will just c&p it here. But I was thinking about it and I really do think this is the reason.

Honestly I think that if you are going to WDW frequently, it kind of loses it's luster a bit. Places like this site tend to attract people who are frequent disney visitors. Any treat, had over and over and over again, begins to feel like less of a treat. Also the more you go, the more chances you have for places to have an off night.

I noticed this when I was going 3-4 times a year year after year and then due to personal circumstances took a break for 5 years - my next trip was probably the most fantastic ever and the dining was great - not at all "downhill" from years past imo... but then it was a real treat and it had been so long since I'd been to any of my old favorites... everything was fun and nostalgic and I just had a great time.

People have been saying that Disney is going downhill for as long as I have been going. "This" is worse than it used to be. "That" was SOO much better in 19xx. If you have never been or haven't been in a while chances are good you will have a great time and the restaurants will be great if your expectations are set properly. The buffets are not vegas quality buffets where they have incredibly rich and expensive foods and they are so huge that turnover is so quick that everything is virtually cooked to order. But I have always found most of the food on the buffets to be hot, fresh, tasty and filling with the occasional end of a tray being out too long and would avoid it until replenished. Most of the buffets I go to are for the character experiences, which have always been at least good, with my kiddo glad to get hugs and signatures without having to wait in line... some much better than others but all head and shoulders above having a whiny hot child standing in a slow moving line for a character.

I mean no it is not 5 star dining in some major metro area with a famous chef (Except for maybe V&A) but as an overall experience, the food is really good. If you are used to inexpensive restaurants and live in a low cost of living area, the prices may be shocking... but realize you are paying for location and and immersive experience as much as food quality. In many places a $40 meal would entail something like lobster or filet or maybe both but that is a bit below the average price of a standard character buffet dinner and you won't find either of those things on the buffet - any meal featuring those things will be significantly higher. People from major metro areas will have less sticker shock.

The theming and entertainment in many restaurants is amazing and immersive, and service is usually really good too. There has, over time, been a bit of homogenization of menus across the property (which you will see if you read all of the menus) but again unless you are a frequent visitor or staying for 3 weeks and eating everywhere, that probably won't effect you. There is plenty of variety to keep someone in at least 2 weeks of daily restaurants without feeling like you are repeating yourself in menu or theme. I have two a day planned for a week and there are still things I am not getting to.

The other caveat is that if you live in a place with amazing local cuisine and Disney does their version of it, I would avoid it. It will invariably be a disappointment. I live in New England and compared to the lobster rolls I get here, the thing at columbia harbor house looks like cat food on a hot dog bun... but some people love it and find it quite tasty. If you're from a place that has stellar bbq you may not find the bbq at WDW to be anything special. I am breaking my own rule and trying Sanaa on my next trip even though I have had excellent indian food and even make it myself so YMMV on that as well. We'll see :) Chances are if you live in an area with an amazing Ethiopian restaurant you will find the african themed places at WDW to be kind of meh. you get the idea. People call this "dumbing down" and are highly critical of it but honestly I don't have a problem with Disney making the food appealing to more tastes - as long as it is still tasty, I'm good even if it's not 100% authentic.

Everyone has a truly off night and sometimes you get to a restaurant when it is having one, but after being a DVC member since 1999 and a member of these boards since 2000 I will say that the grumbling has been going on for well over a decade and if the quality has been dropping as much as people have said over the years, they'd be serving dog food by now. Believe me, it was never THAT much higher than it is was on my last trip. Maybe a bit more variety and a bit more innovation but not so much that it is not worth dining there now.

Bravo @Lisa F! Such a genuine and insightful post and I wish there was a "love" button and not just "like". :) I think without a doubt that the filter through which one views life in the every day sense is the one that is most likely going to be used to view the entire Disney experience, not just dining. That filter is created by our experiences--how often have we traveled to Disney (excellent point you made there!), what our culinary experiences are, are we an optimist/pessimist, how go-with-the-flow are we, how capable are we of letting go of stress, etc.--just a boatload of factors. Secondary to one's unique filter is one's set of expectations. I do think that is extremely important. My biggest one, far and away, is that I expect to have a fabulous time with my kids, regardless. Period. :)

Exactly! It's the if/then thing. IF RoL is not running, THEN a, b and c will be happening. IF RoL IS running, then x, y and Z will be on the agenda. :)

Yep! :) For us, we will be park hopping. I can't wait to find out if a couple of our nights will be spent in AK or MK. :)

And others like to go to Disney Springs after spending the day at AK. It's all just about figuring out when they can fit everything in. :)

we didn't park hop on our last trip but we are for this one. You can have an awesome trip either way. Ak was not a full day (into evening) park in 2014 either so I scheduled that one on my MVMCP day so I could "park hop" on the one day I really needed to.

I wasn't aware there were rumors that there might be nothing at all, huh. I guess we will see in about a month, right? ugh!

Aw thanks :) people get so wound up in the details that they spend all of their time sweating the small stuff. I am guilty of it also, wanting to make it perfect. I felt a lot of pressure in 2014 because I thought I'd never be able to pull it off again and it was now or never for everything. Until I realized well if I pulled it off once, why COULDN'T I pull it off again. So here we are. I still enjoyed my disney trips when we went more often but I never knew just how good a trip could be until I took a several year break and went back with my 6 year old. It will 2 years and a month between trips this time and I think that is enough time to get the old sparkle in my eye back (rather than the 3 month intervals I had before). Seriously I told everyone it was the best trip that I ever took and I thought it was mostly because of how empowering it was to travel with alone as a single mom with my son, for both of us to have a great time just the two of us... but I bet it also had to do with the fact that it had been so long since I last was there that I could enjoy everything like it was new again. I haven't been to most of the restaurants on my list in SO many years. Honestly I think this effect is why some people have rules about not repeating too many restaurants on subsequent trips. It's just too easy for things to lose their shine from repeated exposure.

Makes complete sense and I think you're spot on about the loss of shine! Definitely still very shiny to us! :)

We have some things in common with our experiences. I took my kids as a single mom in 2013. Very often I referred to that trip as "The trip of a lifetime" because I didn't think it was very likely we'd have an opportunity to go back. I am familiar with that pressure you refer to, and also how empowering it was to pull it off. I remember that every single morning of our 2013 trip, right when we woke up, someone would let out a delighted "We're at Disney!!", like we couldn't believe it but how lucky are we and how exciting is this?! It was said several other times at various points in the parks; one of us would just spontaneously blurt it out and it lit this contagious fire of gratitude and happiness.

I went from being a stay at home mom for 9 years to very suddenly being divorced and the head of the household. We had some challenging years in a lot of different ways and it took so much to get there. I'll never forget how magical that vacation was. No words other than it was simply the best! Lots of background on this, but the take-away here is that it meant everything to me to take my kids to Disney, for the 3 of us to experience that together, and there was exactly zero percent chance I would be sweating any small stuff. :) This doesn't mean I'm going to stop obsessing over trying to get it just right, from ADRs to FP+s to where we select fireworks viewing, etc.! lol I mean, healthy doses of obsessing are a required part of the planning process, right?! So, yeah, while I enjoy/appreciate/prefer exquisite meals and short lines and perfect temperature/rain-free days as much as anyone, in the grand scheme of things I think the sort of experience we have at Disney is largely dependent on our perspective.

I truly understand the single mom thing, and I'm very excited for you and your son. Your plans sound positively fabulous and I'm certain it will be all shiny! :)

yeah you really do get it  my child cried so hard the last night of the trip that it made me cry too and I promised I'd take him back but that it would be 2 years. So here we are, nearly 2 years later :) It still feels like the trip of a lifetime because he will only be 8 once. I think it is good to approach every trip like it is the trip of a lifetime and have that much fun but not that much pressure!

Obsessing and planning is one of the best parts for me... it is like buying a lottery ticket, basically an excuse to spend some time daydreaming about what it will be like...but actually will happen! I just sometimes need to remind myself that if i don't get everything i want it will still be amazing!

what are you keeping? lol
Actually a lot! Tusker house, BOG, HDDR, 1900 Parkfare, Minnie's Seasonal Dine, Akershus, Garden Grill and Mickeys Backyard BBQ. We are keeping all the character meals because it will help with not waiting in lines for my youngest DD. Our trip will begin with 14 people, then go down to 10 and then down to 7. Our plans are changing a lot (which doesn't make me happy, because trying to find ADR for that many is hard) and I have a feeling they will change again. Whatever it is, it is. We are in DISNEY!!

You're a good mom keeping your promise! I am sure your trip will be wonderful (and some tears will probably be shed at the end again and hopefully more promises :thumbsup2)

We don't have a ton of meals planned since it's a short trip and we only do one big meal a day but we're repeating BOG lunch and Kona but doing breakfast instead of dinner. Just yesterday I switched from Whispering Canyon to The Wave. We might have friends meeting us for one day at MK and if they do, I'll cancel our late Morimoto's ADR for something earlier because they have a 2yo (it would be her first time at WDW so I really hope they come for the day so we can be there!). It's a party night and we won't be going so I booked dinner in DS at like 8:30 but I think we'll look for something at 7ish if they end up coming.

I'm very much looking forward to our meal at The Wave. I absolutely love how everyone can "do Disney" in the way that works for them--such a great thing! Hoping you are able to meet up with your friends; 2yo is a precious Disney age. :)

I haven't eaten at the wave in many years but we stayed at Bay Lake Tower on our last trip and did room service -breakfast 2 or 3 times and dinner once, and the food comes out of the wave. It was excellent. I LOVE their sweet potato pancakes with chicken sausage and the beef tenderloin is delicious too. Room service was served perfectly hot and fresh.

Ohhhhhh---good to know, good to know! Positive comments about anything on our agenda really fuels my excitement. Room service done well leaves me feeling very pampered, which I adore! Big sweet potato fan here, so I will keep those pancakes in mind since our meal there will be breakfast. Thanks! :)

I don't even LIKE pancakes but I am craving them right now, lol. I do love sweet potato and pumpkin type quickbreads and it tastes kind of like that.

aw thanks. yes, one of the things that is hard for him in every sense is "transitions" so the transition at the end of a trip is a biggie. But I was sobbing pretty hard too, it was that awesome of a trip. That's why I love the planning, it makes it last and last and last.

now where are those star wars dessert parties? he really wants to go, lol. easywdw had a great review.
