This will be our first trip to Disneyland without a stroller for our kids since...well since we had kids. They are 7 and 4 now and we don't even own a stroller.

Are we crazy to not have one? I know we can do piggy back rides and such and we are staying on site, so we always have our room to go back to rest in.

Part of me will not miss having to maneuver it around and try to find it once we get off the rides, but part of me will miss the extra storage and not to mention not having to pick up tired kids or tell them to walk a bit faster.

Anyone have any good experiences with no strollers?

On our first trip to WDW my DS was 3.5 years. He didn't use a 'buggy' at home and he had no thought to use a stroller there. He was a bit bemused at some of the older children in strollers. He had plenty of opportunities to sit down on rides, over lunch etc. We always seem to carry more stuff than others. We carry two backpacks. We laugh at photos - of DH hugging backpack on the peoplemover. Just take things at the kids' pace although sometimes it's hard keeping up with them. Enjoy your trip!

Strollers are such a personal choice - can you go for a full day at your local zoo without any problems? Depending on where you are zoos are different sizes and landscapes, but might give you a little bit of an idea.

Otherwise, you can always rent one. Only you know your kids and what your stamina is!

No! You are not crazy to not have a stroller with you. If your children have been managing without one, they will likely do fine.

Like the Previous Posters said, it is a personal decision and you know your children best. I think it's great that you would give them the opportunity to try it without a stroller.

There are plenty of places to stop and rest(and enjoy), and there are plenty of children who manage Disneyland without riding in a stroller.

If you find that you need one in a pinch, you can always rent one at the Resort.

Good Luck and let us know how it turns out:)!

When I only had one child and he was 2 we visited without a stroller. BUT, we only spent about 6-7 hours a day in DL and we went at a very slow pace. I'm sure I carried him a lot, but I don't remember that part at all. We didn't visit DCA at all.

Fast forward to him at age 5 with a 2 year old brother and we did have a stroller which I don't think we could have done without. BUT we spent more time in the parks (we park hopped) and definitely got to do a lot more. Same thing the year after at ages 6 & 3.

The next year we rented a jogging stroller from the park and I loved it. Youngest was 4. Even DS7 sat in in a few times when he was tired.

You'll be fine without one, but just be prepared to move at a slower pace, get tired out quicker and give out more piggyback rides.

You are not crazy. When my youngest was turning 4 we took a trip and didn't own one. We expected to need one so we borrowed our old umbrella stroller from the person we gave it to (she had a infant and didn't need it yet anyway). We took it on the first day and didn't use it at all. Our 4 yo wanted nothing to do with it. It seemed nice to hold our junk, but it was really just a big pain and slowed us down. After that first half day, we left it in the car and had no regrets.

Don't feel bad about not bringing one. It doesn't sound like it's going to be a problem, but if it does you can always rent one or run to Target and get a cheap one.

You should be fine. My girls really loved their stroller, and it was a bit of weaning to get the DD5 out of it last year, but she's done so well without it - I'm guessing she would have managed ok when she was 4 without it as well. Take advantage of the Main Street vehicles - my girls love them!

I say if you do not use one at home, then DLR should be no different. Most people use them as a storage cart as much as a stroller, from what i saw going through security, so as long as you are prepared to carry all your stuff on your person, you will be fine. I also think most kids have more energy than people assume, and if yours get tired, then take a break, simple!!

Just a warning, these threads can get heated as people have strong opinions on strollers, myself included, so hopefully this all remains civil, as honestly no one knows your kids and your situation better than you!!

Please. I have never seen a thread get heated with someone who does NOT want to bring a stroller. It's only people who want to tell people WITH strollers to ditch them and they start judging the parenting of people who use a stroller.
OP, if you think they can go without, they probably can. You have the option once at the parks to change your mind and rent. I could not have survived last year when the kids were 7, 5, and 2.8yo. The 7yo never had a problem, but the 2yo is a runner, and we needed the stroller to keep him with us as much as for him being tired in the afternoon. Putting the 5yo in on the walk to RI Maingate also made me feel better that they were safe around the traffic, and they had a place to sit while we waited for fireworks and such at the end of long days.
But. That was literally the last time we have used our stroller. Now we're returning next week with kids 8, 5.75, and 3.5yo, and having the same debate as you, having gone without for nine months. (We still own our double stroller, though.) Ultimately, I want it for the airport to help transport the carseat and such to the car-rental place, and I'd like the option of not wearing a backpack at all times in the park, not to mention not having to carry the weight of all our water bottles. But I do see it as more for storage than for kid transport this time around.
Really, if you think you guys don't need it, it should be fine, and the rental saving grace is always there.

We only owned a jogging stroller (for actual jogging purposes) UNTIL we bought a stroller that was specifically and ONLY used for Disneyland. He didn't use it at home, but he did indeed use it at Disneyland.

Why? Because we NEVER walked as much in one day at home as we did in Anaheim! It was needed at Disneyland; it was not needed at home.

At 4 is when we bought the Volo; it was used for at least a year beyond that. We all loved going going going, and the Volo is how we did that. If we were laid back, relaxed, taking breaks type people it would have been different. But none of us wanted to slow down AND none of us liked being woken at 2am by DS having one of his awful leg aches. (it's a genetic thing...I had them well into adulthood where it feels like someone is digging at your frozen leg bones...just awful, and NOT growing pains), and my mom had them too...it's why she had to quit ballet and why she would never let me start taking dance of any kind...mine were so bad my pediatrician had me tested for Juvenile RA)

So with my 4 year old, I would have been "crazy" to not take the stroller. Heck, we brought the Volo on our first WDW trip when he was 6.5. I fully expected to use it, too! But he didn't want to bring it our first day, and then he got through the day without it and it never was opened at all. And that's when it was retired. :)

For your particular 4 year old, only you know what kind of park-tourers you are, only you know how fast you walk and how much you walk, and only you know if you really really want to give piggyback rides instead of using a stroller. (I put DS on my hips in piggy-back position for parades, so he was up at my head level...but not for general walking-around purposes)

Only you know what's best for your son and your family. We will be renting a stroller for my 5 year old when we come in December. He never uses one at home, but there's so much more walking at Disneyland.

On one of our trips to dl, my youngest son was 3.5 years old. I didn't bring a stroller thinking he would be fine. the first afternoon at Disneyland I ran down the road to kmart and picked up an umbrella stroller for $10 for him. Yes....he could handle the walk. But he wanted to stop and look at EVERYTHING! I wasn't expecting him to be quite so slow. he didn't always ride in it while we were there. But it was the best $10 I spent that trip! LOL so if you don't bring one, and you think it might have been a good idea after the fact. You could always just run out to get one! I do recall the first trip without a stroller after that one. It's sooooo freeing! either way, enjoy your trip. I'm jealous! I should be in Yreka this morning on my way to Disneyland. darn new job!

We just went on a quick one day trip and still used a stroller for my 5.5 and 3.5 year olds. My 5.5 was upset about it at first and we told him he didn't have to ride in it, so he walked along side of it almost all day.........but by the evening he was using it. I knew my 3.5 year old would need one because he doesn't nap and he always falls asleep before the rest of us are ready to go back to the room. Poor guy always nods off right before a nighttime show or even during it. My 5.5 year old stayed out in the parks until 11:30....when he climbed into the stroller I told him to go to sleep and he did. He probably could have made the walk back to the room, but I think I would have been carrying him part of the way too.

We walk a lot at home, and never use the strollers at home. But, at DL it is different. On top of all the walking you do, there's also a lot of standing. My DH and I always joke that we wished we could be pushed around in a stroller! It's definitely a personal choice. We figure our next trip we will just take one stroller and deal. I am already starting to plan when we don't take a stroller anymore and we will just rent a locker for bigger stuff like jackets and take a sling backpack for snacks and things.

Like PP have said, you know your child the best =) You will have fun no matter what!

Im trying to decide the same thing....we took our dbl stroller at Christmas but its old and its not a side by side one and it was SO hard to maneuver but I knew my DD4 wld need it....but our next trip is next summer and I will have a 5&6 yr old...my DD6 im sure will be fine but DD is a little on the lazy side right now so we will have to see if that changes between now and then....I did love the storage though

We used a stroller for our 5 year old last year and really appreciated the convenience it offered our family. We got some strange looks from people but we didn't care because this was OUR vacation and we were determined to maximize every moment available to us. Instead of stopping to give our 5 year old son breaks we could continue our vacation while he rested in the stroller. Additionally, since he wasn't trying to keep up with our longer legs all day he was much more alert for activities late into the night.

Another benefit was that we could change our plan on a whim without having to slow down for a tired kid. If we were at Goofy's Sky School and we noticed that the Tower Of Terror was only a 20 minute wait we were able to hustle over to the ride without affecting our son. If he was walking we never could have done this.

I agree with the member that stated be prepared for a slow pace if you let you young child walk. We were way to antsy to slow down so a stroller was a must have.

Good luck.

.I did love the storage though

And, FWIW, by using a stroller as storage you are risking theft. We had two things taken from a stroller. Neither time was it something super-important, and the first time it was something we had just purchased, and a CM hearing DS's sad tale of a "bad pirate" taking his purchased-the-day-before hat ended up giving him a certificate to get a new hat. The second time it was a free balloon that DS loved, that was very obviously taken off of the stroller as it was parked.

Even though we weren't out anything, it still felt BAD. It felt bad to the adults and it really really felt bad to my son.

After the first time, we left nothing in the stroller but waters and, obviously, we tied a balloon to it. After the balloon and thinking about what/who might be touching our water bottles (this is after seeing squirrels in strollers LICKING things), we stopped leaving the water, too.

It's best to not use the stroller for storage at all, really.

I'm not a dishonest person, but even I would get these funny yearnings for all the $150 diaper bags I saw dangling on the backs of strollers, and I knew that unless I happened to make a move as the owner was walking up, there is no way I would EVER be caught taking a diaper bag like that. But then I was Petunia Picklebottom-deprived b/c we couldn't afford them, so those spendy diaper bags look to me like nectar looks to a bee.

Try not to overanalyze looks you're getting. Most people don't look askance at a 5 year old in a stroller. 8 year old, yes. Maybe your son was crying and you didn't know it (I have seen that so many times, especially at loud festivals with big strollers, a kid will be nearly dangling out of a stroller but it's so loud and the stroller is so big the one pushing it has NO idea what's happening...or a child squinting and tearing up from the sun, because the parents thought the canopy was in the right place but it wasn't anymore), or your child was adorable, or was making funny faces, etc etc.

Glad to know that other adults are too "let's go!" to deal with the "stop and look at and peer at Every Single Flower in the Land" stuff little kids want to do. Let's look at 10 flowers through the day, but the rest of the bazillion will be just the same, so let's go! :)

Take the money you might spend buying a new stroller and keep it handy, just in case you want to rent one for a particularly long day, or to get a locker if you don't want to haul all of your stuff. We figured the $7 per day locker was well worth it if it meant I didn't buy one $50 Disney sweatshirt when one of my 4 kids forgot it somewhere midday. Plus, we put souvenirs in it the last day as we shopped.

We found when we took our 4.5-year-old son (with older siblings) that not using a stroller -- and walking only as fast as his little legs -- was a good brake on our go-go-go tendencies. We took our time and made more time to sit and watch.

Good luck! Though we never use a stroller at home, I do NOT travel to CA without the double-stroller for my 6-1/2 yr old and 4-yr old. We get to the park at opening time, stay until they close - and stay for shopping. Even though we could walk back to the hotel for breaks during the day, it's a waste for us, as we only get 3 days there each trip, and we go nonstop for 3 days.

I was debating if this would be the first trip in Sept without the double & just do a single.

Don't care who looks at my 6-1/2 yr old funny (who also happens to be over 4-ft tall) as she sleeps in the back or my very tall 4-yr old sleeping in the front. Since I know we will RUN THEM RAGGED, we provide someplace they can always rest. My favorite part, no complaints walking back to the hotel at the end of the day, and I don't have to worry about them being trampled at the exit late at night!

Your family, only you can decide if you feel nuts leaving the stroller on the trip ;-) (I, on the other hand, am not brave enough .... yet ...)

Good luck!

also some good advice for ANYONE going to Disneyland is start taking walks before your trip. you generally don't walk THAT much any other time, and it's good getting your body used to it. especially little ones who are even less likely to walk that much. I used to walk my kids to and from school every day. 3 hrs a day. one year they got a ride all year and I wasn't walking them anymore. I spent a day at Disneyland during that time. I just about died by the end of it! and I really felt it the next day!

My kids are 5 and 3 - we never use strollers. Except at Disneyland! I like to have the storage - I don't worry about theft, though I know it is possible. We don't store anything valuable in it or anything. Most of the time my kids walk, but there are times during the day they get tired and it's nice to sit for a bit. We bring a lightweight Maclaren stroller - they take turns sitting in it.
Piggyback rides for me are not an option - they would hurt my back.
