I'm just back from our 1st Disney cruise. We sailed on the Magic to Eastern Caribbean including Tortola on 9/12/09. In case anyone is wondering about this first timer's thoughts, comparisons to other cruise lines, and how what I read on the DIS proved to be true, here you go...

Embarking was pretty similar to other cruise lines. DCL's terminal was cleaner and everyone was friendlier than I remember on other cruise lines. At the time we arrrived (about 1pm), the line for Castaway Club (returning cruisers) was longer than the regular check-in! But no line was too long.

I really didn't like the buffet offered for lunch at Topsiders upon boarding. Few items appealed to me and I didn't think there was enough to choose from. (I'm really not a picky eater.) I didn't try the buffet for lunch or dinner the rest of the trip.

The whole ship was very clean and everyone was very friendly. The staff ratio seemed greater per passenger than I had experienced on other lines. (I'm not sure if it is, but it did seem that way.)

While the pools were crowded on sea days, the Mickey pool was still very usable. The goofy pool wasn't at times. The splash zone was rarely busy at all. (Only when the Mickey pool closed for cleaning--which happened twice mid-day that I noticed.)

The staff was very good about removing towels saving seats that weren't being used around the pools. They also enforced the rules about keeping non-potty trained kids out of Mickey pool. (At least the obvious ones, like infants.) They did all of this very politely.

Every great thing you read about the kid's clubs are TRUE! The clubs, IMO, are what makes the extra money for DCL cruises worth it! I didn't think we'd use them as much as we did, but the kids loved them and really wanted to go there! We observed and checked on them a lot and were really impressed! My kids were in the 3-4 group, by the way.

In my opinion, the food ranked third out of my three cruise line experiences. It was good, but not great. Our dining service experience was also just okay. Third out of three lines. Just our experience, sorry! Palo was excellent though! I hated how our servers kept expressing that they were going to give us "excellent" service and pretty much begging that we rate them that way on the survey. At times, it was excellent when they cut up fruit for our infant. But the whole week they never got the hang of the fact that I wanted decaf coffee with dessert. I was the only one at the table, I always wanted it, half the time they never got around to asking until halfway through dessert or never offered at all. I also requested a baked sweet potato for dinner for my infant every night (the night before) and only got it once. Once we got a baked russet potato and once we got a mashed potato, but most of the time we got nothing.

The shows ranked first out of the three lines we've been on. Although I did like the Welcome show better on Carnival--where they involved the audience and we got to enjoy inside jokes for the rest of the cruise.

Debarkation was far superior on Disney than I had ever experienced before. MUCH faster and smoother than ever. Especially the final debarkation, but also at the ports. Not saying there weren't any hang-ups, there were especially at Castaway Cay, but it was still the best experience I had.

I really liked that they gave you towels to use at port and collected them upon reboarding. I like that you could have free soda at meals and at a station if you were willing to get it. (I'm not even a soda drinker, but I just think that's nicer than other lines.) I think it's nice you can bring drinks/alcohol on board if you desire. We didn't do that either. We did bring a case of water in a duffel bag. We told the lugage carrier what it was, and he offered to carry it on-board anyway. We weren't expecting that, but it was nice!

Overall I did like DCL best, but it really was the kid's club that made it clear cut!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on your first DCL cruise. We're planning for our first cruise, and it's nice to read what other "newbies" think. It'll be my DM's 4th, but 1st on DCL, so I've been telling her what differences she can expect.

Glad you had a great time!:goodvibes

One comment...when the Mickey pool closes at mid day for cleaning, it's because something that didn't belong there got into the pool. Otherwise ALL the pools are cleaned at night. It's sad that one guest can spoil the fun for many by not following the rules.

OK, 2 comments. If you weren't getting what you wanted at dinner (as in the sweet potato or decaf), did you speak to your head server? It's not a valid excuse, but they are training huge numbers of new CMs in preparation for the new ships. Contracts in general have been shortened by 1/3 (6 months to 4 months), and MANY new CMs are evident. If you have a concern or aren't getting what you need, go to the top. We did notice the head servers being much more vigilant than on some past cruises.

That would have been a good idea, but we're pretty uncomfortable about complaining. Our servers were so nice, but just not that great with timing, refills, and requests. My sister's family were our dining companions and they noticed the same things we did. We're just not ones to complain.

I figured that about the Mickey pool. I didn't see anything obvious when the pool closed--do they check the pH or something? They were very efficient and thorough with the cleaning. They had it reopened in about an hour or so.

I'm still kinda "hung over" from the cruise. Not alcohol--just tired! So let me add a few more thoughts.

I couldn't believe how many characters they had available to see! Awesome! It was nice how they had the appearances listed in the Navigator. It was cool that so many showed up at the clubs too.

I read that snorkeling early at Castaway Cay was the best. So many people mentioned that the sand was stirred up affecting visibility later. That wasn't my experience. Therer were a lot of snorkelers early. We couldn't go until later because DH and nephew went parasailing early. The afternoon was great for snorkeling. Few others doing it and no problems with visibility. I was surprised at what a large snorkeling area there was and that there's pretty much nothing to see unless you go way out. It ws a nice experience, but nothing like the snorkeling we did at Sapphire Beach on St. Thomas.

Thanks for you review!
If you don't mind me asking,I was just wondering which ports you went to and what you liked at each and were able to do with your children!

We went to Tortola, St. Thomas, and Castaway Cay.

In Tortola, we took a taxi to Cane Garden Bay and went swimming and played in the sand of course. A good tip from the DIS boards was to order PB&J sandwiches (Uncrustables) the night before to take along. While they tried to direct us to the big open air buses at the port, we saw a line of vans that we decided to take. I felt safer enclosed and with seatbelts. The van driver picked us up at an arranged time too.

In St. Thomas we went to Sapphire Beach. Good swimming beach and great snorkeling close to shore. My DH and I took turns snorkeling while the kids played in the sand. There was a restaurant, drink stand, and bathrooms all close by. We'd been to Maagen's Bay before and it was beutiful but crowded so decided to try something different. Sapphire beach was not at all crowded!

We also did a little shopping close to port. It's a good place to get souvenirs since you don't have to take a taxi to yet another location!

I intend to write an actual trip report at some time. I just wanted to get a couple of thoughts out while they were fresh in my mind.

Thanks for the info on the CC snorkeling -- good to know that we can give it a try in the afternoon if we want to. Also good to know ahead of time that we need to go way out -- sometimes if we don't see anything good we give up and go back -- I'll make sure we wont do that at CC.:goodvibes

Did you do Sapphire Beach on your own or with Disney? If you did it on your own did you just take a taxi from the port? If so, what was the cost? Are there chairs and snorkel equipment for rental as well?

We did it on our own. It was $8pp each way. Chairs are $7each. There was lots of shade. Not sure if they rent snorkel equipment--but maybe. We were let off right by a hotel. It was really run down but maybe getting back on its feet? Maybe you can google hotels on Sapphire beach and call to see if they have snorkel equipment rental.

I have a question about Sapphire Beach. On some older posts I read that the bathrooms were no longer kept up (and were disgusting) and the restaurant was closed. Was the bathroom okay on your trip? Was there somewhere to get lunch?
