At the end of september (last week) I will be in NY City for the 1st time and I will be by myself.

What should I go and see? So far I have the
Rockefeeler Center
American Museam of Natural History
Empire State Building
Statue of Liberty
UN Building
Central Park
FOA Schwarz
NY Stock Exchange
Broadway Show (hopefully Little Shop of Horrors)

Can anyone suggest any other places? What is the weather like at this time of the year? I would have been in the US for 4 months so I will have mainly summer clothes on me.

thanks for any help.

AVENUE Q!!! :) Seriously, best and funniest show on Broadway right now.

You should go by the Metropolitan Museum. And the Museum of Modern Art will have moved back into Manhattan by then. And...um, I don't know. What kinds of things do you like? Madame Tussaud's? The galleries in Chelsea? Chinatown? The village? The Museum of S**? The Museum of Television and Radio?

The best thing to do around here is just walk. There are so many great areas to just wander around in, and the weather will be perfect for it. It's usually pretty comfortable in late September. A jacket would probably be a good idea, though. Nights might get a little chilly by that time.

Go to Little Italy and have a meal at Puglia's.

In September, the weather is usually gorgeous...possibly still on the warmer side near 75.

Unfortunately FAO Schwarz is now out of business. The Toys R Us in Times Square is a good substitute. The weather should be beautiful with summer like temps. Strolling 5th Avenue is fun. Lots of great shopping.

You'd need more than a day to enjoy it all-

I am there from the 23rd to the 30th.

Thanks for the tips on where I should go, now where shouldn't I go? Are there really dangerous places that I should steer clear off?

Look up and wave when you're at Rockefeller Center! I work right above ... and I literally mean right above ... Radio City. :)

if you're downtown anyhow, go to the South Street Seaport. you may also want to stop at Ground Zero.

if you like baseball, check the schedules now to see if the Mets or yankees will be playing any home games while you're here. if either team is headed fro the playoffs, you won't be able to get tickets for that team when you're actually here, so plan ahead.

I always recommend the Bronx Zoo. one of the best in the country.

South Street Seaport, Chinatown, Little Italy.

I'm going to agree with the whole walking around suggestion. Get a feel for NYC, it's pretty easy to navigate.

I would go to the TKTS booth in time square on a Wed. morning to get half price tickets to a show. I love Broadway, so seeing two shows in a week would be fine with me :)

FAO Schwartz is re-opening, I believe. I went in March and they had signs in the windows stating that it was comming back.

Hey look, BR, a minute apart and practically the same suggestion. Must be in the water ;)

Canal St. for fake designer purses?:p

I love the Grayline tour buses. They have tours of all loops and
some combined. See their website. The buses allow off and on
all day so you can just ride by some sights and stop at others.
MOMA and Metropolitan for sure. SOHO and Greenwich Village.
Harlem is wonderful. There is a great Harlem tour that includes
a Sunday morning gospel service and a scrumptous lunch.
The architecture is amazing! I loved seeing the Apollo Theatre
and Harlem is experiencing a resurgence. I really liked an
evening roundtrip ride on the Staten Island Ferry on a clear night.
Walk, walk, walk. Comedy clubs are open almost all night.
I think "Catch a Rising Star" is still there; I haven't done a comedy
club in a long time. Where are you staying? Check out a hotel
called "The Library." It's quite unusual. Grand Central Station
isn't on your list either and it was just restored! Great shops and
restaurants as well as history all around you. St. Patrick's Cathedral is a great photo stop, Tiffanys is good for window shopping. Don't forget to stop by one of the dozens of Godiva
Chocolatiers for a truffle!!!! Stage Deli for wonderful food
and service so "New Yawk" it's almost funny-don't get frustrated
or put off; these folks are some of the few real New Yorkers and
there's no charge for the atmosphere. Have fun!

Thanks for all the advice I will certainly take it all to heart.

I think I may be coming into Grand Central Station it is either that one or Penn as they are both really near my hostel which is in a great location - loads of things are within walking distance.

Does anyone know what a Big Apple Greeter is? Someone recommended this to me.

some of my faves not mentioned yet:

Saint Patrick's Cathedral - absolutely spectacular

Times Square -

Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum - wow they look so life like they are scary

Ollie's Noodle Shop - a bowl of "Little Bit of Everything Soup" really has everything. And for $6.00 we were full all night.

I really like the Toys R Us store but you should check out if FAO is open. Right across is Central Park with all the horse carriages and it's very pretty.

All great suggestions.

In addition, a walk out on the Brooklyn Bridge is kinda neat, IMO.

You've got most of the "must-do's" covered. And, okay, it may be touristy, but all of my out-of-town friends and relatives just LOVE it when I take them to late afternoon tea at the Palm Court in the Plaza Hotel. (Maybe they're just SO happy to be sitting down and resting their feet while eating pastries! They even have a children's tea menu which my DD adores.) It's about $29 ($19 for kids), but we do this, skipping lunch and dinner so it ends up cheaper in the long run.

I also take them down to SOHO for boutique shopping and then for lunch at Balthazar's restaurant. These are less touristy, but one of my favorite neighborhoods in the city.

Have a wonderful time! It's a great time of year to visit.

Hey, danacara - we're neighbors - I'm across the street in the Time-Life Building.
