1st time in NYC - new question post #14

I would say check out Times Square. Or go to Madam Tussande's (I SO didn't spell that right) Wax Museum. And if you want to eat somewhere cool for the kids I'd say either Mars 2112 or Jekyl and Hyde. I haven't personally eaten at either of those but I've heard the atmosphere is great.

I know this would take a large chunk of time out of your day but you could also try getting tickets to a matinee of a Broadway play. Maybe Beauty and the Beast since it's closing it's curtains on July 29th.

Love Jekyll and Hyde for some laughs! casual dining the kids will love, so will you!

I second the wax museum! My kids love to go there (so do I ;) ).

I thought Jekyll and Hyde was the worst. I thought the food stunk, but to be fair we also weren't seated where you could see any of the actors etc... Plus as we were waiting for a table a waiter spilled something hot and greasy and very smelly on my son. We didn't even get a "Gee sorry about that." from the waiter or the manager after we complained about it. It stunk so bad I had to peel the shirt off of him and throw it away. So maybe my distaste for this place is jaded. I stand by my the food stinks, comment though.

I do like Mars 2112, food is average, typical for the type of place, but the theme is fun and my kids have fun there.

I've never been, but people give Ellen's Stardust diner rave reviews.

Mars 2112 is fun also but there is a cover charge..We went to J and H early, about 4:30, and had almost the whole cast to oursleves and they were hysterical! Food was typical burgers, chicken fare, ours was good. It isn't the place for gourmet by no means, but good. IMO. There is also Planet Hollywood or even Burger Heaven for a non- themed but good burger place!
20 East 49th. (near 5th)

I think the cover charge (ride charge) is only if you want to do the "ride" down to the restaurant. I'm trying to remember how much it was.. maybe $2.00 a person, does that sound right?

It was not much at all, but adds up depending on how many members are in the party. You must ride the spaceship! ;)

No that is not true. The 2.00 charge is a NYC entertainment charge-not a Mars 2112 charge and it applies if you ride the ride or not. Personally I think the food at Jeckyl and Hydes is better than the food at Mars 2112.
If you decide to go to the empire State Building then you can also check out the NY Skyride while you are there. My daughter got a kick out of that.

Thanks, I thought I was having another senior moment :) ..I didn't recall being given an option.

Wow! An NYC entertainment charge?! What the heck is that? Is that because it's a theme restaurant?

We were just at the zoo the begining of April lots of fun. If you do go to Central Park, find the carousel and take a ride on it.

OK, I've checked out a few maps and think I have a "barely scratch the surface" itinerary. I'm curious if we can do all this in one day, and if we can walk the entire route.

1. Central Park and Zoo, then down 5th Ave. to
2. FAO Schwartz and
3. Saks (and maybe lunch or tea at SFA Cafe)
4. Continue down 5th Ave. past Radio City and the Empire State Building.
5. Cross along 34th to
6. Macy's, then up Broadway to
7. Times Square. Then go up 7th back to Rockefeller Center and
8. Top of the Rock.

The kids think the plan gives them enough interesting things to see and do in a first visit, and I think it's physically do-able and financially quite reasonable. Feedback greatly appreciated!

Yes and yes! You could easily do all of those things in one day, as long as you get a good NYC pace going. We've lived in NYC for years and have still not done the top of the Rock. You'll have to come back and give us Manhattan locals a review! ;) Have fun!!

Wow I got tired reading your Itineray. You are talking about walking ten blocks from Times square to the Empire State Building alone. It can be done in one day. I would skip the stores. I cover alot of ground using mass transit. I also thought of something that may help you with your trip. I'm going this May. I'm thinking about doing a grey line bus tour www.NewYorkSightseeing.com Check out their map. This may work for you. Its a guided tour, and you ride in a double decker bus. You can also get off the bus at a place you want to see and when your done you can catch another grey line bus and procede with your tour. I'm lucky I live close to NYC. Its a great city with so much to do and see. I love to visit often and may go to the Bronx this week. See what you want to see and enjoy yourselves do as much as you can comfortably do Have fun.
