I know this sounds silly but I was just curious. We will be flying SW for the first time. Well first time to fly ever. I will be checking a bag but bringing a carryon (a backpack) and my purse. My purse has my glasses, medicine, etc. Ladies where do you store your purse? I'm afraid to stick it under the seat. I read on one thread one lady puts it in her carryon and stuff her carryon in the overhead. Does anyone else do this? My purse will have my license and everything I dont really want to take any chances with it. Thanks! :confused3

OMG.. only.. 44 days!:cheer2:

I would never put my purse in the overhead. I ALWAYS put it under the seat in front of me where it is much safer.

Bear in mind that you won't be placing it under YOUR seat, it will go underneath the seat in FRONT of you, so you'll actually be able to see it.

Mine always goes under the seat in front of me, between my outstretched feet. No one has every tried to grab it, and if I go to the lavatory the purse goes with me.

Under the seat in front of you. There's really no way for anyone to get it there. There's a bar underneath the front of the seat so the person in that seat would have a hard time reaching down for it.

Some flight attendents are picky about leaving the purse in your lap for takeoff and landing, especially if it's more than just a small one.

If you are in a bulkhead row (row 1), you must put your purse in the overhead for takeoff and landing.

You are not allowed to hold any item in your lap for take-off and landing, except a lap child (!) You can hold a book or magazine if you are reading it.

Under the seat in front of me. People get pretty aggressive with ramming things into the overheads to 'make them fit.' I don't want my purse subjected to that. I choose a purse that will fit easily under the seat and zips closed so that I don't have to worry about things spilling out. Your space on the airplane is really tight, I'm always happy to have it stowed away and out of my way.

On the way down, I put my purse at the bottom of my carry-on bag and plenty of stuff on top. On the way back, I carry my backpack, since I need room for gifts, etc. in my carry-on.

You should read up on the TSA site as well about what can go in your carry-on, re: liquids.

Normally I have a small backpack with items that I might need on the flight (water, Kleenex, book, snacks, etc) ... I usually put my purse inside my backpack prior to boarding and then stow it under my seat.

Normally your carry-on that goes in the overhead is close enough to you that you would see if someone were to try to get in and/or carry it off the plane. So I wouldn't worry too much about that as long as its within sight. But I carry IMPORTANT stuff in my "personal" item because the airline staff can always ask you to do a plane-side check-in of your carry-on if they think it is too big and/or they think all overheads are already full.

Many of the airlines are starting to enforce the 1 carry-on and 1 personal item. We just flew Delta a couple weeks ago and they were stopping passengers from boarding that had a carry-on (for the overhead), backpack/bag, and purse (e.g. 3 items). These women were told to put their purses in their small bag because .... 1 carry-on and 1 personal item.

What a shock they had ... What, you are enforcing the rules!!!!! Well, I never!!! This has never happened before!!! I was always allowed to carry on as many shopping bags, purses, etc that I could carry!!!!

Everyone was told and it was enforced that ONE carry-on in the overhead and ONE "personal" item to be stowed under the seat!!!

Yeah, it's about time airlines started enforcing the rules!!!

Be sure to follow the 3-1-1 rules for liquid and gels that you carry on the plane. That includes lipgloss (the gel/liquid type), so be sure to check your cosmetics bag before boarding! Guess who forgot once? *oops* I usually switch everything over at home and missed one. *sigh*

In addition to my carry-on bag that goes in the overhead compartment, I carry a tote bag that will fit under the seat in front of me. It contains my purse, an extra pair of reading glasses (five-hour flight to MCO), reading material, tissues, hand lotion, lip conditioner (removed from the 3-1-1 bag after security), some snacks, a bottle of water, and anything else I think I might want during the flight. I rarely remove anything from my purse while in flight (hence the duplicate glasses, lotion, etc.), but my purse (not the tote) does go to the head (restroom) with me.

BTW, I lock my carry-on after going through security. I don't like placing something in the overhead compartment that anyone can access the contents too easily. Although, as my father always said, "locks are for honest people." If someone really wants to get into a bag badly enough, they will! My philosophy is to make it as difficult as possible! *LOL*

Even my tote bag can be locked, although I never have done so. But if I were planning to sleep during a flight, I certainly would lock it! But I admit I can be overly cautious about that sort of thing! :)

Just use common sense--what makes sense to you--and you will be fine!

You're going to have a magical holiday! :)

Well, I'm a man, so obviously I don't carry on a purse, but in general, anything that has the chance of being broken goes under the seat in front of me - laptop, camera, lenses, etc. Stuff that won't break if someone smashes into it with their carry-on goes in the overhead bin.
