First off, I apologize since I'm probably the one who sent this topic adrift by not staying on course with the original question. I just figured we were overdue for a good dress debate :)

Mary - I am curious who encouraged you to wear shorts, because my navigator for Wednesday clearly says Suggested Evening Attire: Mexican, Tropical, Casual (no shorts or jeans, please) I'm not taking a stand on that issue, just trolling the literal waters.

EAP - I don't recall the episode, but I do hope that nobody deals with an improperly dressed guest ala Tony Soprano! ;)

We have done the Eastern and Western cruises and as the previous poster stated "The servers reminded us to wear shorts the next night.". The plastic chairs in AP will wear a blister on your legs during a 2.5 hour meal. I may wear slacks the next time just for that reason.
I agree on the respect aspect as well. We were late getting in at our Key West stop and did not have time to change. We had a beautiful dinner at Topsiders with steak, baked potato, salad and a wonderful desert in our shorts which was appropiate. It is a different place at night. If you don't want to dress up, give it a try.

We have been on four Disney Cruises and our bags always get to our stateroom in time for us to dress properly for the first night.

My family, some friends and I are going on our first cruise in May. I am really excited about dressing up for dinner and know my DD11 would be, too, but the trip is a surprise. Anyway, the requested dress doesn't sound like it would be too hard to follow. We are planning on taking a hanging bag with nice sundresses and polo shirt/slacks for DH to wear first night. I was wondering about the dress code for Palo's at the champagne brunch...I'm assuming a jacket is not required, maybe just slacks/polo??? We decided to do brunch 'cause both my dds will want to dress for dinner every night and eat with us!!!

The outfit you describe will be fine for the Palo brunch, but your DH will probably feel more appropriate in a jacket and tie for the formal and semi-formal nights.

Thanks! DH is definitely wearing a dark suit and tie on formal and semi-formal nights. Now if I can just convince him to wear the pink dress shirt to match both dds pink tafetta gowns.....:smooth:

I think it is going to be so much fun dressing up for dinner. I just bought myself a great pair of sexy black shoes to go with my black dresses! I am going to look great. I found some great deals on black dresses at Dillards......I got a $160 dress for $14.99!! Actually, I got about three of them at that price!
I haven't shown them to my DH yet. Going to wait until we are on the cruise!!

All of you that are cruising in the next couple of weeks, I am so jealous. I can't wait for my trip. Have a good time!!

:Pinkbounc

I'm so jealous.......my heart says "yes' but my feet say "no way" to sexy black shoes! Waaahhh!!!!!!!

I'm more of a keds girl, but I figure if my feet hurt, I'll carry them to the resturant then put them on to go in. Take them off under the table and slip them back on to walk out! :)

Slacks and a polo shirt is fine for the brunch at Palo. Enjoy!

Last summer I found the most comfortable pair of heels in the world at Aerosoles. They are sexy, strappy black sandals, and I swear they are as comfortable as Birkenstocks!

When you are a fat short person - it IS very hard to find a formal dress. Trust me - I spent over 9 hours one day looking for one and couldn't find one. I refuse to go to a bridal shop and pay $200 for a dress I will wear once that still might not fit me. I found something but it isn't going to be to THAT standard! And if I rented a tux I imagine I'd be flamed here for that!

Look on Ebay or in consignment shops--one of my friends just bought a Vera Wang on Ebay for $85. I have a very good "short fat" (your words) friend who has cruised DCL four times now, and managed to find herself a beautiful gown at a consignment shop for $15.

assumptions that everyone has money to purchase certain clothes and that everyone assumes that we will dress a certain way.

When you book a cruise you are aware of the requested dress code. It's in the cruise brochure, it's in your docs. Choosing to ignore this shows disrespect to the cruise line and your fellow guests. I guess you have a problem with DCL, who apparantly assume that guests would dress in a certain manner, otherwise they wouldn't bother to offer a formal and semi-formal night.

Neither--resort/smart casual is fine for that (and tea). Most of the gentlemen we saw were in chino's and polo's, and the ladies in sun dresses. There were a few men in oxford shirts and sport coats, but they were the exception rather than the rule. :)

I spent the money last year before our Nov "cruise". And here they sit in my closet. Ive since lost 10lbs w/9more to go. Im NOT spending any more money on formal clothes! My tropical shirts will be worn w/tank tops underneath - more like a jacket. My long skirts? Who knows? If they are too big I may just wear pants formal & semi-formal nights. (I dont sew)

Barb--congratulations! You might want to think about getting things altered. I lost about 20 lbs a few years ago, and I had everything altered to give me the incentive to keep it off--if I gained the weight back I wouldn't be able to get into my favorite clothes :)

My Dad's wife wore an absolutely stunning formal pantsuit on formal night and she looked fabulous! If I could find the same thing I would have worn pants too but I did wear a long gown. This year it will be a tea length (do people even "say" that anymore?) very dressy black dress with heels (the only pair of heels I've ever owned in my 43 years of life!). Can't wait!

Maybe if I went to the aerosoles shoe place -- I live in my Birks!

I agree Barb - have your formal wear altered.
