We're arriving on a late flight and probably won't get to the Dolphin until after 1AM. Does this ruin my chances of getting a room request? I'm planning on sending my request to the hotel the week before we arrive, but wasn't sure if they actually will hold these requests or if they give the best rooms away to the first comers.

You might call them and ask what time their computers go down for backup. I had that experience at BW once when we had a flight delay and needed to check in during the wee hours; we had to sit in the lobby for an hour because they could not access the system, so they could not key a room for us.

Generally, when you show up in the wee hours, you don't get premium rooms; you get whatever is still vacant. However, if the hotel is really full and your reservation is guaranteed for late arrival, you *could* get upgraded, though that is usually a real long shot. It did happen to us once in at the Chicago Hyatt; we checked in at 2 am on a Priceline ressie, and they gave us concierge because it was the only thing that they had open.

We checked into the Dolphin after 2:00 am once, (lots of flight delays - we were supposed to arrive at 4: 00 pm!). We got the best room ever on this trip.

we checked into the swan at 11pm and still got an upgrade, from a standard view to a balcony room, resort view. It was nice. We have a starwood preferred AAA card, it guarantees an upgrade if one is available and a 4 pm checkout if one is available. it was free if you have AAA call starwood and ask!
