Tuesday 26th October 2010
We started the day with a late-ish breakfast at The Golden Corral, Maddie’s choice as she was flying home today. We all had too much to eat, of course. There was so much hot food, plus fruit, cereal, pastries, donuts, chocolate cake and ice-cream! I had pancakes with oodles of maple syrup, which were lovely and fluffy. At just $7.99 each, including drinks, it was very good value.
Pirates Island mini-golf was right next door, so that was our next stop. It was extremely hot today and quite humid too; very Florida-middle-of-the-summer weather instead of October weather, so we boiled on the mini golf course as there was very little shade.
Mandy and her family are very, very competitive and Mandy was absolutely certain she was in the lead, and made comments all the way around the course every time someone made a poor shot. It was therefore all the funnier when we added up the scores and gleefully found she was fifth!
After the golf, it was already time to take Maddie to the airport. She was flying via Atlanta on the way back. We found the short-stay car park, and went into the airport with her. She checked in and then we had a coffee in Starbucks before waving her off through security. It was very strange seeing our “little girl” about to travel home on her own, and being so confident with it! Where did the years go?
From the airport, we headed to Festival Bay where Tony bought a shirt for himself and one for Callum in Sheplars, plus I bought a few t-shirts for him for Christmas. We wandered around the mall, but there are very few shops there now. The huge Bass-pro is still there though, which we like having a look in. It seems so very American to me.
We stopped at a few of the rather tacky gift shops on the way home. For some reason, Cal wanted us to bring him home a black trucker’s cap with the US flag on it. You would think that would be easy to find, but we just couldn’t find one.
Back in 1975, we didn’t have time for a shopping day as such, but we did buy ourselves some Disney souvenirs. Mandy and I had been given quite a few dollars by various relatives (in fact we had £9 each which became $22 – those were the days!) and we had a lot of fun choosing things to take home. We both bought a giant plush Winnie-the-Pooh, a china Pinocchio and character sunglasses (which we still have), and floppy sun-hats with our names embroidered on (which we no longer have). Thelma and Ralph (our mum’s friends) bought us a Disney purse each.
Here's us, all grown up, with our Pooh's, both of which have been living in our respective lofts so are rather grubby. As you can see, plush toys have changed a bit since then. These are very stiff; they feel like they're stuffed with straw!
Mandy bought a pin:
and I bought a necklace from the Native American Indian area which I think must have been part of Frontierland, shown here with my Donald purse, my beloved sunglasses, and park maps from '75: (Yes, I do find it difficult to throw things away!)
We also bought lots of key rings and mugs for our friends.
Our parents bought a little brass Mickey statue and a china Mickey and Minnie. Here are the china ones:
And a tea-towel.
On our return home, Mandy couldn’t wait to show our grandparents her Pinocchio. She ran full-pelt down their garden path, tripped over the back doorstep and dropped him on the hard concrete, whereupon his head promptly fell off. She was distraught! Had I been a good sister, I would have offered her mine, but I didn’t. Instead, our mum glued his head back on for her.
Back to 2010, Tony and I decided to go to Bob Evans for dinner. I chose a delicious chicken pot pie which came with soft dinner rolls, and Tony had sausage pattie sliders and fries. Tony ordered a cappuccino but it came with cinnamon on top which he didn’t like, so I had it (and it was lovely – I now do this occasionally back home!). We were much too full for a dessert, which was a shame as I had been looking forward to the pumpkin pie. The bill was just $21.
We drove back to the villa and Tony watched American football while I wrote up my journal.
Mandy and the others returned quite late, having spent the afternoon by the pool, then the evening at Downtown Disney. They ate at Earl of Sandwich, and had Tuna Melts which were apparently delicious, before going to Disneyquest.
The weather channel, (which I love and could probably watch all day) confirmed that the temperature today was 91 degrees, which broke previous October records.
We received a text from Maddie to say she had arrived safely in Atlanta, but had been worrying unnecessarily over her luggage. She had waited and waited for her luggage to come round on the carousel and it wasn’t there. When she went to report it, she was told it goes straight through to her next flight, so doesn’t have to be retrieved at Atlanta! None of us realised this (despite having flown indirect before!), and they hadn’t told her at check-in. I think she was just relieved it hadn’t gone astray.
Tomorrow: A hot day at Hollywood Studios.
