17 Day Diet

I am going to get the book. Does the plan just tell you what foods to eat? Do you have to measure food like Weight Watchers or just eat the right foods like South Beach?

The book does have recipes and gives suggestions on what to eat. There is no measuring..thank goodness. It is pretty simple really..two fruits before 2pm, two probiotics and then lean meats and veggies. Oh, and 4 bottles of water and a few cups of green tea! I still have one diet coke during the day and make it my treat! It is pretty simple to follow and I am never hungry. I do always have a pot of veggie soup in the frig. It is my staple food if a craving happens.

I don't understand why anyone would do a 'fad diet' like this or drink the shakes, etc. Yes, you might lose a ton of weight in a few days but hopefully you do realize this is water. Think how long it took to put the weight on...do you think a magic wand will make it stay off overnight.

There are better options out there---watching what you eat. Weighing and measuring portions is a big one. People think they know what a portion is...try and measure what you think one serving of breakfast cereal is....then actually measure. Most will find they are way off. Track all you eat for a few days...this includes the bites of kids food you eat when cleaning the kitchen...the sample tastes of dinner. The nobody sees it doesn't count stuff.

I have found that Weight Watchers is the best for me...I can eat whatever and still lose. BUT others have luck with Jenny Criag, Nutrisystem, etc (I am not a fan of those where you don't eat food you can make at home ---- I would not pay for prepackaged food for the rest of my life and know a few who do great on that type of diet but once they quit buying food they gain back).

Others have suggested free websites for support....I joined sparkpeople and really enjoy that. Some of the 'pills' out there have so many side effects. There is nothing that is going to take the weight off permanently quickly. It can't be done and if someone or some book or some medication, etc promises you that they have the magic answer I'd turn and walk the other way.

That is my view on this...I wouldn't do it. I am happily on WW now...and know it might take longer but my weight (I have 18 lbs to lose) will come off slowly and as long as I continue to eat sensibly will stay off. :goodvibes

I decided to use some elements of the 17 day diet and some common sense. i eat yogurt or fruit for breakfast, make a salad for lunch when i am home and not traveling, for dinner lean meat and vegetables. I stopped snacking so much cut out most breads, potato chips, cookies, I try to exercise at least 17 minutes every day, i drink lots of water, if i am very hungry, i eat something not on the diet that I know will stop me from snacking. snacking is my biggest problem. i lost 6 pounds doing this and i have never been able to lose weight. i have to change the way i eat because my HBA1C is pre diabetic.

I had tried "FitOrbit" an online weight loss coach. You pick the type of trainer/coach you want. The coach then makes you an exercise and complete menu of what you will be eating and doing for the whole week. Based on how much you weigh and how much you want to lose it maybe difficult. The trainer had TXT me and sent me emails several times a day. I lost more than 5 pounds in a week and felt Great. My trainer was Deborah.

I lost 3 pounds after 4 days and by day 7 I had lost the remaining. Only 1 week. It was a long week, I did feel hungry at times but not much. She told me what I was eating that day and it worked. My brain always tells me to buy/eat what's on sale or what looks the most tasty.

Costs: $30 Weekly for FitOrbit
$120 Weekly Shopping for healthy food & ingredients.
1 Hour to cook and do exercises.

IMO: I'd rather be a bit fat, happy and spend my money at Disney.pirate:

The 17 day diet and HGC diet are both different correct? Which one is best for a non-red meat and pork eater?

in the 17 day diet, the first 17 days you only eat white meat chicken and certain fish, inthe second 17 you are allowed to add very lean red meat and pork. don't know anything about the other diet.

as far as losing 5 pounds in a week, i have had the swine flu , been unable to eat for a week and have not lost one pound. so i really am not encouraged at all by people who have diets that lose 5 pounds in a week. When i went into the hospital to deliver my baby, I was in labor for three days (no food), delivered a 6 lb 6 oz baby and lost exactly 6 pounds, this ont he hospital scale. For some reason, weight stays on me.

Wha? The baby is surrounded by about 8lbs of fluid and you have at least a lb of extra blood.. That would mean you would have had to gain 10lbs by eating nothing to lose only 6lbs... Are you sure ?

yes, i remember it well. I also remember coming home from the hospital with the baby and my mother saying to my mother in law "I can't believe how fat she is'. I only gained about 14 pounds in that pregnancy, so I came home 8 pounds heavier. (I had severe nausea for the first 6 months of pregnancy and only gained 2 pounds in 6 months.)
When i found out I had cancer, I literally could not eat. I had to force a little food down . after about three weeks, I was able to eat a little, had major surgery, then recovery. in about that three months period of no appetite, i went down 8 lbs. Unfortunately, as soon as i got on Tamoxifen, i gained twenty pounds. so I know i am not going to be losing 5 pounds a week or any such thing. My doctor told me one pound a week.

The 17 day diet is such an easy diet (unless you have food issues or just can't lose weight) that I can't see why people keep referring to it as a fad diet. It's healthy and easy and I don't intend to look back. I also don't want to spend a lot of money!

Glad you're doing well on WW, but not everyone can/will succeed on it. Diets aren't one size fits all.

I have done both NS and JC and have maintained my weight losses on both. I agree that it's a drag to eat prepackaged food, but for some of us, that's just what has to be done. I don't want anyone feeling bad for doing these diets. I've lost 40lbs and kept it off because of Jenny - I only quit because of the price.

True...and not everyone can succeed on Jenny Craig or Nutrisystem either. I would prefer to eat normal food than prepackaged. But that is a moot point and we could all get blue in the face arguing over which diet plan is best. Right now it looks like from the news NS is #1 and Jenny #2.....

Think the whole point of everything is the fad diets...those that claim fast weight loss are the ones to steer clear of. Any diet that teaches portion control of normal food (even if prepackaged) is going to be a better option. Limiting yourself to a few foods to lose weight isn't going to lead to long term weight loss. A diet that teaches portion control, better food choices and healthy lifestyle will give better results.

Most importantly the attitude of the dieter is going to lead to the success or failure of any plan. Some people go gung-ho for the first week or two then give up. Some stick it out for awhile then put it all plus some back on. I chose WW because the plan has worked for me....but I know for others it doesn't. I am making this a lifestyle change because I have heart issues in my family, my cholesterol was up this past physical, etc. I have been amazed at what I thought was a portion vs. what is actually a portion. I now measure and weigh food at home. When we eat out...I eat half of the food or less.

People will do what they want diet wise. Think the main thing is as adults we need to work and teach our kids healthy eating and exercise habits. There are way too many pooh sized kids and adults out there (yes some do have medical issues and can't lose weight BUT lots more don't). My son who is 14 and I just completed our 3rd half marathon this past weekend. I was amazed to see more and more parents and kids doing this. Granted we weren't the fastest ones out there....but we did something enjoyable together that bettered our health.

Good luck to everyone on their weight loss journey.... whatever you choose to follow.

where is everyone getting the hcg from? How much is it? I saw on DR Oz show that some companies sell fake HCG so if I buy some I wanna make sure its the real stuff! TIA!

That sounds very sensible. And I bet you don't feel like you are "dieting" at all. I never felt hungry when I was cutting as long as I was eating enough lean protein. Good luck! You are on the right track! :thumbsup2

Some people, because of fluctuating hormones, will still retain a lot of water after birth. Have you ever had a good body fat test. . like with calipers or in the water? I think that might be beneficial to you. And yes, if you are almost diabetic, your hormones can wreak havoc on your weight. You CAN still lose. .. but you really need to find out what is happening in your body and with your metabolism in order to address your problems. If you can afford it, it would help a lot to hook up with a good trainer. .. like one that works with competing body builders and fitness models. They can really be experts in all things weight related.

Just wanted to add that I have a friend, her husband is a personal trainer and a competing body builder. She was doing EVERYTHING right and still gaining weight. She is also an RN. . .so she advocated for herself quite a bit in getting to the bottom of her problem. It turns out she had a pituitary tumor. :( She was able to have it removed and is making some gains now, but if she hadn't have been working out and eating as well as she was, she most likely would have gained about 3xs the weight she actually did through all of this. So keep up the good fight.

I'm very curious about the hcg diet. Do the drops work? Can you get them over the counter? if so I would love to know where, someone pm me please:).
I was under the impression that you had to go to your doctor and get a prescription and then inject yourself, that's definitely not for me, I'll keep my extra 30 lbs.:rotfl:

I am on tamoxifen, takes the hormones out of your body and makes you hold a lot of water. over two more years to take it. I had the doctor check my thyroid, and they found two nodules which I will have biopsied the end of the month.
I am not as hungry as i was before, so the way i am "dieting" is working. I have to permanently change my diet, so i opted to do something I can live with. Oh but I love pasta, cheese, pizza, chips, yada yada yada.

I have been on the 17 day diet for one week now and have lost 9 lbs! Mind you I am walking for 60 minutes and monitoring my caloric intake on Livestrong.com. I have come to realize that my carb and sweet cravings are symptoms of being carb sensitive and feel so much better now that I have eliminated white bread, rice and sugars from my diet. The first three days were the worst until I detoxified my body, but now I seem to be on a role! I watched the author on a talk show and was really impressed with how he presented his eating plan.

:thumbsup2PS I bought the book at Costco as it had the best price.

You don't need to deal with a doctor or clinic at all. Check out mamaclock who I mentioned previously.
