17 Day Diet

I see that there's a book out. You guys have made me really curious!

I also did HCG and lost about 30 pounds in a little over a month or so. The diet worked great for me. I did it back in the fall and so far I have kept the weight off with no problems.

I do monitor my weight and if I see it go up I'm careful to take corrective action right away which is usually just a couple days of really watching what I eat and cutting out carbs.

I start phase 3 on Friday! I will do one more round in June.

i'm going for a full 40, maybe longer since i'm using the Homeopathic HCG drops ;) this has to be the easiest diet I ever done!

I've found that I can't stick to any diet that restricts what I eat or makes any food forbidden. That's why I like Weight Watchers. I know I can eat anything as long as it fits into my daily points allowance. I generally choose to eat healthier foods so I can have more of them! I've been on WW since August 1 and have lost 60 pounds as of this morning!:)

I had been considering the 17 day diet for a while and ordered the book on Amazon yesterday. I'm curious to see how it works out!

I'm always leary of any kind of "use our system, it works fast!" kind of diet. Weight loss should be slow and steady to promote changing your eating habits so you keep it off.

I've lost 9 pounds in almost 7 weeks by just counting calories and getting moving. I use www.myfitnesspal.com , which is free and also has a phone app. I eat 1250 calories a day plus any I burn from exercise (so I usually am eating closer to 1500-1600 a day) and the weight is just falling off. I can eat anything I want, although I chose to eat healthier foods so I can have more of it. :P

Sure, I'm not going to lose 20 pounds in a month, but I didn't gain it all overnight and I don't intend to lose it overnight, either. I want to instill better eating habits in myself along the way.

Thanks for the website, I checked it out and joined, it looks awesome, I've been doing it for two days and am having fun keep tracking of my food and exercise!

Best diet ever:

Not paying attention to portion sizes but WHAT I am eating. Cut down on processed food (including my favorite - cheese)and alcohol, no meat, fill up on organic grains (cook at home rice, quinoa, millet as the side starch instead of potatoes) as many vegetables as possible, at least one fresh food at each meal, fruit in the morning, every morning (not just fruit, also oatmeal or whole wheat toast and peanut butter, but sometimes just a ton of fruit and soy yogurt), limit dairy, and exercise. I lost about 15 lbs and going down! Every thing is LIMIT not ELIMINATE.

But I'd like to lose 15 lbs by this weekend. Is there a diet for that?

I would gain weight on this diet! Too many carbs for me. I do better on high protein low carb.

I've lost 30 lbs since late october on really no diet at all. I havent eliminated anything from my diet (except for what I am allergic to), I just eat smaller portions of "junk" and more fresh foods. I also go to the gym 4 times a week.

I have had 3 times where I have gained a few pounds or plateaued but they was because of surgery in december (gained 3 lbs in the 6 weeks I was out of the gym) and I plauteau every time I am on prednisone (twice since october).

I've tried "diets" and they don't work for me. I am currently down from 160lbs in october to 130lbs now and I am sitting here enjoying grilled chicken w/ veggies and a homemade cookie:)

Protein forward has worked for me. Now I'm a gastric bypass patient nearly 2 years out, so I have had the benefit of malabsorption and restriction in helping me lose 190 pounds without exercising, but a lot of the post-operative eating rules for patients are good to follow for people who haven't had the surgery. I started following the rules and lost 40 pounds on my own before surgery.

I try and follow a 10:1 ratio of calories to grams to protein consumed. If a product as 100 calories, it should have at least 10 grams of protein in it. Naturally that eliminates a lot of processed foods. But since a gram of protein is 6 calories, that only gives you 4 calories for fats or carbs. If you try and structure your overall eating to where 90% of the calories come from protein, you should feel better and see the weight drop. This is the premise behind Atkins and South Beach diets and can be relatively easy to follow on a long-term basis.

One of the post-op rules is to not drink while eating and to wait at least 30 minutes after eating before drinking something. I tried this before I had surgery and it worked wonders in keeping that full feeling after eating a meal. Liquids push food through your digestive system quicker.

Drink lots of water--I make sure I drink 2 bottles of water before each meal. Sometimes if I feel like I'm hungry I'm really just thirsty..so I make sure that it's really hunger and wait until I'm through with my water before eating.

I found that carbonated drinks and caffeine make me crave the carby "slider foods" (chips, crackers, etc.) so cutting those out helped me a lot with cravings. Once I started eating healthier and drinking the water I just felt better.

I haven't tried the 17 day diet and I would be leery of trying any type of fad diet such as this one.

I was Gestational Diabetic when I was pregnant and started seeing a nutritionist. She helped me figure out how many calories I needed to maintain my weight and we worked out a plan for after pregnancy. She broke down the calories into carb, protein and fat servings. It is further broken down by meals and snacks. She did all the work for me! It was so easy.

After my pregnancy the Diabetes was gone but I had a very long difficult recovery (7 months!) because I had complications and I didn't follow the plan we had developed. Then I had a few months where I half-a@#ed it. I have been back on the plan for 3 weeks now. As of last week I had lost 8 lbs already and I don't know what I am at now...I weigh myself tomorrow. I am also exercising a LOT more because I want to be used to walking 5-6 miles everyday before my trip to Disney this summer. My current weight loss goal is 37 pounds and I am hoping to reach that total in the next 125 more days (29 more to go!).

Diet and exercise is definitely the way to go. I don't go without my favourite foods I just fit them into my allowances! Good luck with your goals.

I have to back myfitnesspal.com too! I have struggled with weight loss for many years. I have been using my fitness pal since January 7th and have lost 24 pounds. It is so easy to use and I feel I am losing weight the correct way. A lot of these fad diets take the weight off, but as soon as you start eating normal again, all the weight comes back on. My goal is to lose a pound or two a week. We are going on a cruise in March 2012 and hopefully I will be down 60 or so pounds which will put me at my goal weight.

I just started the 17 day. I'm a 'diet veteran' who has struggled with weight all my life and have done it all - atkins, zone, south beach, nutrisystem, WW, jenny craig. Let me say this - all diets work if you follow them properly. I've lost weight on all those diets I listed. The problem with people not being able to lose weight it sticking to the diet. This plan has it's advantages there with it's maintenance phase.

For me the easiest and best was JC - i've kept all that weight off. It was expensive though, so I had to quit. I've noticed through the years I've dieted that low carbs suits me best. This plan is a modified low carb - not as restrictive as atkins, which I wouldn't call a fad diet. Science has proven that carbs make us gain weight - WW has paid attention to this as well since they've modified their program. So, i think it has great principles. It is a bit restrictive in the first phase but it's not really that bad for those of us who are used to restricting carbs.

I say if you know your body, and know that you're a carbaholic, try it. It really helps cutting out the cravings for me.

I would agree that if you have a condition that professional advice is best. However, the 17 day diet is not just a fad diet. It is nutritionally very solid which is what attracted me in the first place. Yes, I can live like this.

Started the 17 day Diet on Jan. 2 and have lost 35 pounds. DH lost 30 in 10 weeks and is now just maintaining. He's a lifelong bodybuilder who had let his weight creep up. We both have always exercised and haven't really increased that.

It is a very restrictive diet especially in the first 17 day cycle. What attracted us and kept us on it was that it is very nutritionally sound and we felt so good right away. No cravings and easy to stick to.

DH still follows it during the week. I'm still on it as I feel so good that I've decided to be able to fit into my wedding dress before my 50th birthday this year.

We had so much success and felt so well that several friends and family decided to give it a try. I think that they all found it too restrictive and quit.

I have tried it, and did lose some weight, but it was really too restrictive for me and my family. I was having a hard time finding meals to fix for my family.

Why did you feel that you needed some other meal for your family? I feel that the lean meats, unlimited steamed veggies, fruits, yogurts, etc... are perfect for my family. Granted, I'm not one trying to feed a family on $100 per week (not saying that you are either).

I'm sure that my family misses mexican food night but they love turkey chili, lettuce cups, eggplant parm, bbq chicken- all recipes from the book. Although, I changed the chili recipe to one with lots of veggies and fresh tomatoes. During the third cycle, they enjoy whole wheat pasta.

Another benefit is that I feel like my family is also eating a lot healthier even though I'm the only one dieting.

I strongly discourage any fad diets. edited....removed atkins and south beach....sorry. i think that is more lifestyle change....my point was all the latest and greatest weight loss ideas...

I watched my best friend try every fad diet there was....the lemonade diet, maple syrup, diet pills, fasting, nutrisystem, etc. etc. etc. She and I used to be close in weight 15 years ago; we were both thin and probably size 6 and hadn't had kids yet. She now wears plus size clothing where I have never gone above a size 8 [except obviously after birth...I was heaviest after kid #3 and was probably a 12 for almost a year...then I started working out], usually a 6, sometimes I was even a 4. We are both short [5 1" and 5 2"]. We are both 40ish.

What I have done vs. what she has done....I exercise regularly. minimum 3 x per week max 6. Weight training and cardio. And eat right 80% of the time. I have never done a fad diet. I have restricted carbs and done low calories when I needed a 'jump start'.

Eat most of your food from the perimeter of the grocery store....that's where you'll find produce, whole grains, sweet potatoes instead of white potatoes, couscous instead of white rice, more fruits and even more veggies, lean protein [chicken and fish and soy], Less processed food. Severely limit snacks, white breads, white potatoes, white rice.

Then allow yourself one day a week or if you're afraid to go hog wild one or two meals a week where you have whatever you want.

Water Water Water

We would have this discussion every time she tried a new diet and she would say I know I know but I'm just going to jumpstart or I have to make it strict to work, etc. etc. and each time she would lose some but then put MORE on afterwards. It is so hard.

Currently I'm 10 pounds up because I have been cheating more, exercising less and not drinking my water and drinking more than I should alcohol [love wine]....so now I'm getting back to it. I have my journal right next to me. And I worked out early this am because I knew I wouldn't have time instead of just running out of time.

JOURNALing really helps. Keep a journal open and write down what you eat. write your goals. write your water. write how you are feeling. write your weight and your exercise. It really helps you focus. If you have to write it down, you might grab carrots instead of chips, etc.

Good luck.

Trish

I find it easy to stick to also. I don't see it as a fad diet because I have no intention of ever eating in any other way except that I won't be as restrictive of course. I like that it's so healthy.

That Adkins Fad diet you just talked about, is pretty much what you are doing, after the first 2 weeks. It isn't Fad, and if it is, I will be sure and tell my and my DH cardiologist that it is, they don't think so.

Everyone thinks Adkins or South beach is a fad eat all bacon and meat you want, that is not true. The first 2 weeks are very limited to meat and veggies, you must eat your veggies and shockingly, they actually discourage processed meat. After that you slowly add back in good carbs, to find the magic number that your body can handle and still lose weight and then finally to maintain your weight.
