16 year olds trick or treating

I am glad you posted this. I was not going to let my 12 yr old DS go out last night because I thought he was too old.

At first he was ok with it, but as the time got closer he was getting upset that I wouldn't let him go. I felt bad and said as long as you wear a costume and say thank you and behave you can go out. I am so glad I let him go. He went with a big group and some of the girls had very elaborate costumes that they had spent a lot of time on. It was great seeing these kids have some good fun and not running around the neighborhood causing trouble. They are great kids.

You are a good mom - and I will let my son t-o-t as long as he wants to and as long as he dresses up.

Thanks for your post.

I had just replied on another thread, we had a lot of teenagers this year, much more than in any previous year...and most were in some type of costume and all were very polite. My daughter who is 15 and 1/2 decided to stay and give out candy so alot of the kids were friends of hers which was nice (she was sorry she did not go with them). I think my daughter thought she was too old to go, but after seeing all of her friends during the evening I think she will go out next year.

that is wonderful and glad she had fun. you are never too old to have some fun.:D

Sue - what a wonderful perspective that is. :)

Thanks for posting this..... :)

We do ask kids to grow up too fast. My 12 year old didn't want to go and I made him. He and his two friends had a blast, then they watched a scary movie. I don't care how old the kids are as long as they are dressed and respectful. I remember one year when I was in junior high a neighbor woman said "Don't come back next year, you are too old and won't get anything", it made me feel terrible! I work in a middle school and urged all the kids to dress up and go out. A lot of them did, they had wonderful creative costumes and I was really impressed that most were home-made. Glad your daughter had a good night.

Thanks Lucky4Me and everyone here with the stories. My DS (15 in Dec) also dressed up last night and went with 2 friends (who DIDN'T dress up). He/they were called 'too old' at one house and also 'beggars'. I didn't think this applied to DS since he dressed up tho. And, he gave ALL his candy to another friend. He doesn't care for candy, he likes halloween! ;) It's soo true that they could've been doing something far worse, Lord knows I was before 15! :o :o

And, I DID pass out candy to at least one ADULT that I know of ~ a Mom dressed as Austin Powers! :smooth:

I guess, just because I didn't & don't "get it" doesn't make me right. :o

Very enlightening thread, Thanks again and, {{HUGS}} to all our 'big' Kids!! ;) :)

Loved TOTing....:jester:
Now I have dd's to get me candy...

Great Story!!:)

It's sad that people can be so myopic & think there's a certain age where Halloween should no longer exist for them. :(

It's people like that do deserve to get egged & soaped & everything else they think every teenager out past 6pm is obviously up to.

Jeff, I don't believe anyone here said that Halloween ceases to exist when you are no longer a child.

I wasn't talking about people here. I was talking about the people that posters mentioned in their posts that were less than gracious to the trick or treaters. I'm sorry that wasn't more clear.

But then again I would suspect the less than gracious candy givers probably wish teenagers would disappear anyway. As for me, I'm equal-opprotunity....I hate anyone that isn't me. ;) :teeth:

Jeff, I am hearing your compassion for the teen-scene but, I would never encourage my teenager to go back to that house and do what you say this person 'deserves' and, quite honestly, I told him if he did (or his friends), he better be ready to clean it up!

Jeff, is 'soaped' similar to shaving cream/whipped cream?? I haven't heard 'soaped' before. I do know about TPing tho, NOT from personal experience mind you! I did see some silly string sprayed all along a block. ;)

"Soaped" means one of two things. It can either mean dumping laundry detergent on the lawn & hosing it down or taking a bar of soap & writing on windows, it's supposed to be hard to get off, same as vaseline. I haven't personally done any of these. I also have heard of some pretty mean stuff like "pulling a duke", an "upperdecker" & "bologna paint job". If you know these, you know what I mean. I'll err on the side of taste & not discribe these (if you really wanna know, you can PM me) pranks.

Most of the pranks we did were to friends or people we really didn't like, not to random people because we were bored or candy givers that were stingy or anything like that.

A recent one was between two roommates. Matt said something to Louis. Louis got mad & did a hiney rub on Matt's bed...Louis was buck naked. Matt asked me what he should do to get him back - my friend & I got an evil grin on our faces & the ideas were flowing. The leading ones were a classified ad selling a car for really cheap or a personal ad...in the MSM section. As we were talking Matt mentioned that Louis uses baby wipes. We laughed hysterically. Then I got an idea - Matt could get some liquid icy-hot or jalepeno juice & pour it on the baby wipes. "Operation:Fire Wipe" was born. Louis tried to claim he had to go to the doctor because of it, but it turned out to be a bogus guilt trip. :teeth:

JEFF!!! And, I thought TPing and egging were bad enough!! Your poor parents, you really KNOW about causing trouble!! LOL :p So, tell me about .....;) , I want to be prepared!! My DS (the MAJOR Indy fan, btw! ;)) needs to know these things, he's obviously still an innocent! And, I'm still an overprotective Mom!

Operation: Fire Wipe!!! LOL but, Major Ouch!!!!

LOL, TP & eggs are child's play & kinda trite. The closest thing I did to a traditional TPing was when my buddy & I worked at DQ during a 99¢ banana split sale. We kept all the peels from a saturday & "borrowed" a couple of those paper towel rolls (not the weak, wimpy ones for mass consumption...we're talking the thick, sandpaper-esque, heavy duty ones that weigh about 5 pounds each. After it was over, the recipient's yard was a greenish-yellowish-brownish tint & the entire tree was white & the columns from the front door to the walkway were completely covered, which meant that they had to actually cut the towels to get to their yard. I, of course, denied having any part in such nonsense. I don't think I ever got the banana smell completely out of my car. :teeth:

Another fun one was during a church event. The girls were going out to see a movie (a sappy, boo-hoo chick-flick no doubt  ), so we (the guys) decided to have some fun. We put shoe polish on the windows, then it got even better. One of the girls drove a Fiesta & he knew she kept a magnet with a key by the bumper. He opened the car & drove it up to the curb of the church. The 15 or 20 of us picked the car up & set it in front of the church doors. Well, that wasn't enough, so one of the guys stopped at his store & bought a couple rolls of pallete wrap (kind of like super-strength saran wrap used for products to hold them together for a fork-lift, you might have seen it at like Sams or something) & we wrapped the car. We ducked behind some bushes to watch their reactions. It was priceless, but I guess we were laughing a little too loud because they spotted us, we jumped in our cars & took off.

Trust me, you do NOT want your DS knowning about the others I mentioned in the previous post.

And I remember that he's a big Indy fan...even though you removed the Indy pic from your sig. ;)

What a great thread and story Lucky4me. My DD went out with her friends last night and she is going to be 17 in 3 months. They were all dressed and had a ball.

Although I was a little disappointed she didn't stay home with me in my goulish lit graveyard in the front yard, surrounded by a spooky fence, with a strobe lit coffin containing a full size skeleton as well as grave stones, ghost, goblins, spider webs. Not to mention me dressed as "Scream" sitting with my newly acquired FOG MACHINE making the whole yard an eerie grave yard. I must admit I scare the odd person, hehe, while directing them to the backdoor to get their candy. Oh yes and lets not forget the eerie scary music playing throughout the whole yard. Oh yeah I forgot, Hallowe'en is only for young kids...LOL.

And don't think this is an easy gig...I live in Canada and the temperature was below 0 ºC (that's 32 ºF for my American friends) Hallowe'en night, and it was actually snowing while the kids were trick or treating. Sometimes it's hard to see the costumes under the winter jackets HAHA.

Anyway a great time was had by all. My house made the front page of the Local paper this year and the local TV Station showed up and took video to put on the TV and even interviewed me as "Scream" What a blast. I do it all for the "KIDS"... and not to have fun myself... LOL.

It's all about the show...!!!

Have a Disney Day!

Here's my one and only "rule" about trick-or-treating.....if they have some semblance of a costume I will give them plenty of candy.....the others, I may give one piece to. Sometimes we get kids who obviously don't have alot to spend on costumes but will have some face paint or a sports uniform on and I'll be generous with them. What drives me crazy is when older kids who could pull SOMETHING together show up with a pillowcase and ring the doorbell and stand there waiting for the candy...not even a "trick-or-treat"....that's another thing...I really want them to say those words...or "Happy Halloween" or something to acknowledge the day!!! Am I weird or what?

Sue...thanks for the great story....you must be a great mom!

Here's a ? What about kids who bring 2 bags to collect candy and say they're getting it for their "little cousin"? Are they legit? I usually give just one piece....if the cousin is too little to come out, aren't they too little to eat alot of candy? This year our almost 2year old was sick so he didn't go out at all...but our 3 older kids decided to share....that's a much better idea than collecting a whole separate bag. But baby Z won't be eating much anyway!!!

My DD thinks that 12 + is way to old to go TOT, she wont even pass out candy to the '' DUMB BABIES WHO TOT '' !!!!!!!!!
