12 year old boy fashion delimma

Help! My ds has never cared about what he was dressed in until this year. Mind you, he has a closet full of very nice clothes from hip stores at the local mall. He says he wants longer sleeved t-shirts for school. He says the sleeves on his shirts are too short. He says all the kids are wearing longer sleeved t-shirts. I have been to two different malls to find what he is talking about and no one seems to know what I am talking about. Also he says white tennis shoes are in. There are a million type of white tennis shoes out there. Any hip moms or dads out there who have an idea to what my son is talking about? Thanks!!

12!! Ugh!! I hate this age. My DS is 12 and has to wear the white leather converse with 3 black stipes down the sides. This is what all the boys wear by us. As for the longer sleeved shirts.....check out Kohls. My son refuses to wear long sleeves. He has to wear t-shirts and wind pants. I'm sick of seeing this same "outfit" on everyone. Good luck. Well...my 12-year-old is a girl... I hear you! Anyway, try Aeropostale - they always have good sales and supposedly their clothes are "in"....plus they're cheaper than many other options. As for the shoes...I'd ask for one or two choices and start looking for a sale - that's what I do and it usually pays off even if they have to wait a week or two! Good luck!

Longer sleeved t's could mean very oversized.

My son often wears a t over either a thermal or a long sleeved t in the cooler months. Could that be what he wants?

Frankly I'd just make him go shopping with you, and tell him that you're not going to buy it if he's not going to wear it.

My DS also 12 is going through this same stage too!! I bought him some new clothes recently in which he said---I can't wear that!! He is into the long sleeve T shirts too which I found at Old Navy in numerous styles and colors! Ugh I hate this age!! Also he is into growing his hair out as the "mop" head as I call it is in!!

My DS13 will only wear windpants and t-shirts, short sleeved. On the coldest day will wear a hooded sweatshirt. That's it. It is so much fun, NOT, when he has to wear something else.

Most of the more fashionable boys around here wear a plaid button up shirt, open, with a t-shirt under that and jeans. Is that what he is thinking?

Why not just take him with you so he can show you what he's looking for? Maybe give him a limit to spend since he already has a closet full of nice clothes? Let him take some of the clothes he doesn't wear to a consignment shop, then he can also have whatever money he gets frm those as well?

I still remember growing up my mom always said she would buy the ugliest thing she could find and I would love it!! Gotta love the late 80's!!!!!!

Try Pacific Sunwear and Aeropostale. Just got DS 13 long sleeved tees and long sleeved thermals. They have the necessary strange logos on the front. The prices are reasonable and they are warm enough for cool days and lightweight enough for overheated schools. Pair em with some faded jeans and he's good to go.

My ds said that a boy wore a shorter sleeved t at school the other day and he was royally made fun of. Other students were saying he was wearing his sisters t'shirt. I think that the boys like the t'shirts that have sleeves closer to their elbows, and not the shorter ones that are coming up under their armpits like the girls shirts have been lately, think they are called cap sleeves?

And around here tennis shoes haven't gotten to that stage yet, most of the boys wear whatever on their feet (minus Crocs LOL).

Although I've seen a lot of the Vans type skater shoes with huge laces in them and left untied and pulled out really loose. It looks like they are wearing Ronald McDonald shoes when they do that....YUCK!

Take him to American Eagle - they have exactly what he's talking about. (Online it's www.ae.com)

My son is 17 and a Junior in HS. His favorite store is American Eagle. He also wears the white tennis shoes. He likes K-Swiss.

If you have a Foot Locker nearby, take your son there - they have just about every brand of tennis shoe, I'm sure your son will find the perfect shoe for him.

Thanks everyone!! You are all a huge help!!! He is also growing his hair out into this messy mop which he loves!! It is driving me nuts. I tried to take him to get it trimmed and he flipped out. My little quiet boy has grown up into the "teenage swamp monster".

My daughter was about this age when I finally got so fed up with fighting over buying her clothes that I just started giving her a clothing allowance each month and she had to figure it out for herself. Worked like a charm - no more fights, and she turned into the biggest cheapskate/bargain hunter I've ever seen! She can now stretch a clothing dollar so far it's amazing.
