So 'sliding' is the horse responding to the reins effortlessly? Why do the shoes make a difference. Or am I totally confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sue

think of it this way. Your goal is to slide on a hard wood floor. Would you rather try to slide in socks or in sneakers with really good treads? You'd want the socks because they create less friction. Think of regular horse shoes as the sneakers. The sliding plates are the socks. It makes it easier for the horse to slide, since only the back feet are "on" the ground when he slides. The front feet propel him foward, but never actually slide. To get a horse to slide, you accelerate down the length of the arena until you are at a full gallop. You then ask the horse to stop. No horse can stop dead from a full gallop, so reining horses and roping horses slide in order to slow themselves down. Rope horses do it to propel the roper towards the calf and create the "calf jerk". Reining horses do it in the same principle, but it's all for show. The wider the plate, the less friction. So, the the wider the plate/fuzzier the sock, the easier it is to slide. "Sliders" have their disadvantages. They include...

-less traction on surfaces (pavement, cemement, mud, dirt, grass)
-increased risk of slipping on hills and loose footing
-Less traction to escape any danger
-harder to propel hind end foward
-more stress on the hocks (the elbow joint of the back leg)
-more expensive
-last a lot less time than most shoes
-Come off easily
-Can be damaged simply by stepping on a stone

The advantages include...

-increased sliding distance (anywhere from 10-40 ft)
-Less heat in ankles and hooves
-less stress on navicular bone (deadliest bone in the horse's body)
-less stress on canon bone (similar to our radius in the arm)
-Less stress on hip
-Easier to draw legs under the body
-Easy to make and put on
-Can be made to have removable studs

I am going to look at some patterns. Right now I have to look up leg injuries since Boo appears to have one. The vert thinks it's an absess, but he hasn't examined her yet. Will let you know as soon as I hear the news.

I got it. Now I can't wait for ESPN to have rodeo events. Sorry about her problem. Is she restricted to her stall? Do you go visit her?

Sue

Usually OLN has more rodeo events. Yes she is confined to her stall since she has a bandage on her hoof. I go see her and brush her since I can't ride her.

Happy Birthday:cake: :cake: :cake: Tomorrow!!

well it's not good news with Boo. She has to remain absolutely still for the next 3 weeks. If she tries to lay down, she will most definetly break the bones in her stifle joint. They are very irritated and fragile due to the terrible conditions of the arenas i ride in. They don't maintain them, so they get hard and this is what happens. I will report back when I have more news. As of right now, she is tied in her stall with pawing chains on all 4 feet to keep her still.

Jen, so sorry to hear about Boo. I do hope she mends and is back to normal very soon.

So does anyone have any fun plans for Thanksgiving? We are going to NYC to see my brother and SIL. We are going to hop in a van Tuesday night with kids in jammies so they can sleep most of the way. We will stop at a hotel probably somewhere along 80 in PA to nap, clean up, etc, then on to the city. I got tix to take SIL to see CHICAGO (Huey Lewis is playing Billy Flynn, how strange). Should be lots of fun. I am really looking forward to this trip. Two days in the city with folks that have never been there so we get to show them the sights. Pretty cool.

It has gotten COLD here. Yesterday morning it was downright balmy then it got really cold by late evening and now it is really cold out there. ugh.

I e-mailed you too....you do not read those either?? :confused3 Wanted to know if you & DW made any decisions.

nope she must remain as still as possible. I have her tied in a corner so that all her feed, water, and hay are right in front of her. If she walks around, the bruises/irritation/damage will only get worse. I guess i will have to run to the tack store again and pick up boredom busters. I will most likely start looking for another horse. It just makes me so mad/sad/frustrated. I will probably get a colt out of a famous stallion and not geld him. I am just crazy mad. The vet says its a 40% chance that she will never be able to be ridden again. :sniff: she will have to wait 2 years until she will be bred :sniff: but I will never get to see my baby have a happy life. :bursts into tears: :sad2: :sad2: :sad1: :sad1: :sad1: :( :worried:

JEN I'm SO SO SORRY

would you want one of mine???????? I know there not the same in many ways.

let me know :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :love2:
