I'm not watching the show, but I can tell you I was teased horribly in elementry school....about my hair. It really was pumpkin orange back then and kids were SO cruel. Through life really, in high school I was a cheerleader, thought to be part of the popular crowd but I really wasn't.....I wasn't blonde or brunette and there were pretty much no other redheads in a senior class of 600+ . Guys definitely didn't go for the pale red head look in Florida.

I finally had to come to my own peace. And probably am still working on it. I cheered in college and the "pros" and I really never fit the mold of "that girl". I am different, I am what I am. I hope my grls can do the same. At least I know they won't be teased about red hair!

It's such a shame too. I honestly grew up with maybe two female great friends. I lived with guy roomies all through college.....it was SO much easier. I don't want my girls growing up thinking women are the enemy, but in actuality, they sometimes are.

I think this stuff has always been going on. Way back when I was in HS we had a boy who was constantly teased by most everyone. My best friend and I were the closest thing he had to friends, meaning we talked with him, listened to his "odd interests" - the one I most remember is that he knew absolutely everything about the Red Baron from WWI and talked about him alot - and did not tease him or make fun of him. We also did not socialize with him outside of school. So the sad thing was that early in our sophmore year he was swimming alone as usual at lunch (WHY the coach allowed that no one knew) and he hit his head when he dove in and he drowned. So, all the popular crowd took off school went to his funeral and wailed and carried on. Most of this crowd was in my English class and after we returned from the funeral our English teacher really gave them what for about how they had treated him and now it is too late to shed tears, etc, etc. Her lecture stuck with me all these years. Some of them didn't even appear to hear though. Ok, that is my downer message for tonight. Just to say that this is not new stuff.

You've got me watching this now and I am sobbing for this poor father and his son. I just don't get it?? When did youth get THIS hard???

I like what that father put on the boy's headstone... I think it was "remember the fragillity of adolescence". Did they ever say if the kid's mom was in the picture? They never mentioned her while I was watching. I think the saddest thing is that the boy was obviously depressed and giving out warning messages -- he told the mean girls, he told the death obsessed IM friend, and he even asked his dad about wanting to die. Heart-breaking for everyone.

V- and you just never know who or why. DrHug and I both think you are just a cute as can be (yep we talked about it after the wine party last year -isn't she just cute?) and it is hard to imagine that you would be teased about your looks, but it happened.

Adding that Miss Teen USA when DD #2 was in HS (1988 or 89) was from our little town here and she was a redhead that was just a cute as could be too!! Mindy Duncan was her name.

Angie, of course you were the sweet kind girl that befriended this poor boy!! I think that you're right that the pack mentality and meanness has always been around. The show was pointing out that the technology allows the kids to be in constant contact -- cell phones, IM'ing after school, etc., and it also makes them feel more anonymous; easier to be even meaner when it's not face to face.

I am impressed that the teacher in your class noticed and addressed what was happening, it seems like teachers kind of throw up their hands about these things.. at least my BIL, a high school math teacher, does.

Yes, this teacher was our class advisor too. I always respected her alot and I know it was not an easy thing she did.

it is/was hard. I am the pale girl who went to the beach with the rest, could never get a tan, etc. "let's connect the freckle dots", "I'd rather be dead than red on my head"....even in high school, it was as hurtful then but still. Add to all this looking like no one in the family and kids of all ages have a field day!

What's funny - it my guy high school friends who suddenly grew up in college "loving redheads"....

Speaking of gorgeous - our passports came today! Now the photo they took of me was not TOO bad, but DrHug's was NOT flattering. Well when the State Department got thru with them, mine even looks AWFUL, so you can imagine how his looks. Oh my goodness! He has NO EARS!! Now don't ya'll be teasing him though! I called him at work to let him know about the missing ears! Hmmmm, was I teasing him?
