Do walkie talkies work on the ship? If I give my 11 year old priviledges to sign himself out of the clubs and bring walkie talkies from home, I'm worried they won't work. We tried ours in WDW acouple years ago and they were useless due to the fact there were so many people using them. We have the motorola talkabout fr50 models.

We gave my 9 year old son signing out privileges. Whenever he signed out, they would page us and tell us where he was headed next or if he wanted us to meet him somewhere. We had the walkie talkies, too, but never used them.

We gave my 10 year old sign out privileges in Jan and didn't worry at all. She always know where we were and came right there to tell us where whe was going next.

At age 10, I gave my DD sign out privleges, but said that she had to either be in the lab or the cabin. That is, if she left the lab before the agreed time, she had to go to the cabin. The next year, I gave her the run of the ship.

A good solution is to allow them to sign out, but ask that they page you before they go, telling you where they will be. THis does require that they ask the counsellor to page you...you get an alphanumeric message from them (not a phone number where you have to call back).

We would frequently agree to meet outside Lumiere's at 11:45 for lunch, or whatever.....

We allowed my DD8 (nearly 9) to sign herself out of the Lab, but only if DS10 joined her.

As described above, the counselors sent us a message whenever the kids checked out. When DD and DS were together, they could go anywhere they wanted on the ship. The truth was they usually headed straight to us under a pre-arranged schedule, went to the arcade, or went back to the cabin. It was quite convenient and simple to manage.

Family radios worked great on the ship. Eventhough DD had us paged when she was signing out of the club, the pages seemed to take about 5-10 minutes to get to us.

We loved the family radios. There where times when they didn't come in clearly, but if when that happened, we usually met back in the room to get re-situated.

My 9 year old son had sign out priviledges and a Walkie Talkie.
He used both. The Walkie Talkie did work between 9 and 10.

He had to page me to let me know when he was leaving the club and where he was going. He also had to call me on the radio with any changes in his plans.

He was very good with it. If the rules were broken the priviledge would have been revoked.

Have a good trip!

Michelle,

We also have Motorola talkabouts and were going to bring them on the cruise for DS. I will also give him signing out privledges, but he has to get ahold of me, too. I bet our sons would be going out together anyway. I did tell my son that he wasn't allowed in the cabin with anyone else. I just don't think that's a great idea. There are going to be 4 boys on that cruise that will already know each other through email--I'm sure they'll hang out together all the time.
