10D on a Cruise?

Hey all,

I have a Canon 10D which I love (though of course I'd love to have the newer model...)

I'm going on a cruise - Disney of course! Should I take my 10D or use my other digital? I'm mostly worried about humidity.

Thanks!

Holly

I've taken 300D (little brother, cheaply made compared to the 10D) in the snow, in light rain, to Asia (where humidity is all around). No problem.

Take whichever you like, but you'll probably shoot more pics if you take the smallest and lightest you have. The only time I had a problem with humidity on a cruise was when I took my Nikon N90s SLR. The camera was fine, but I could not remove it from its case and, say, rush out onto my verandah to shoot a photo, or the lens would fog up. The solution was to take the camera outside in its case, let it gradually acclimate, then take out the camera and shoot. Its lenses are the same ones I use on my digital SLR. Of course, you can buy anti-fogging products, but I generally avoid them.

With my smaller digital cameras, I don't have any serious problems with the humidity. Plus (just as during a particular stay at AK Lodge) I find I am more likely to keep my camera handy and take it everywhere if it's one of my smaller ones. :)

You may want to try keeping your camera wrapped in a towel while not in use. Others have said this works. It keeps the camera from the complete extremes in temperature that effect it the worst.

A garbage bag, if plastic, can actually contribute to the moisture build-up, but if that works for you that's fine. I would not want to hassle with keeping my camera in a towel throughout the cruise. To absorb moisture when in my camera bag, I use silica packets (the same kind that come with new electronics). It is when the camera is taken out of the bag that the real humidity hits it.

Depending on the season, there can be severe extremes in temperature changes around the ship and on deck or off the ship. It is those changes that can cause problems. I've found that my smaller digital cameras do not seem to be as affected as my SLRs, and are easy to keep with me. I only suggest that for those who have a choice among their cameras. I'm not saying go out and buy one if you have something else.

But hey - whatever works for each individual! :teeth:

The towel is not for moisture build-up, but to insulate it from the extreme temperatures.

I doubt you will have any problem with your 10D on the ship. I had my DSLR in Puerto Rico last July going from air-conditioned room to heavy outside humidity and did not have any probems.

My case does an excellent job of that, but once the camera is removed from the case and exposed to the hot and humid air, that is when it can be affected. I have only found this to occur in certain months and locales though. I never have a problem cruising in January. ;)

again, try the garbage bag. I've even used it to get out from a warm car to take a picture during a blizzard such as this:

I never have a problem going from warm to cold - only from cold to hot and humid. When I am on safari in Africa (I lead photo safari workshops in Kenya and Tanzania) I keep my camera in a heavy duty plastic garbage bag both in and out of its case until shooting. It's the perfect protection from dust and a little rain. :goodvibes

BTW - Nice pics, Kelly!
