........................

To the best of my knowledge, none of the national chains take anything other than real credit cards. That's one of the few places you can't use a debit card instead of a credit card. I would try calling around to some local places to see if you could find one that would take cash or some other alternative.

I read here that Dollar will take a debit card, (you might call them). Generally, all of the other companies require a credit card to secure your reservation and let you take the car. Most of them will allow you pay for your rental when you return it, as you choose, (at the counter), with cash, debit card or credit card.:)

We used a debit card at Dollar at DFW and don't think there policy at MCO would be any different. I found on their web page that you could use a debit card and that is specifically why we used them. We had no problems with this.

Dollar and Alamo accept debit cards and do not require a "real" credit card for the rental.

Thanks to all who responded!

Hi C. Ann
I emailed Dollar the other day and the response
from Ann at the Internet Help desk was:

YES you can rent with a debit card, with a major credit card logo
but she also said here is the policy :
Minimum on creditcard/debit card:
Estimated Rental Plus: 15% OR $200.00
Whichever Amount is the Greater

Hope this helps you!

Actually, with Dollar it is the amount of the rental PLUS 15% minimum 200.00. It could be more. This is stated on their website, and just as an FYI, this applies to "real" credit cards also.
Carol, Alamo is not that bad. Get a Quick Silver Card . It is free and you make your ressies online and get there, swipe the card in the little kiosk thing , within 30 seconds your car location is spit out of the machine, you get the car exit at the gate and you are on your way.
Takes max. 10 mins. I have rented from them a number of times and they have been good for us. Nothing beats onsite, but, Alamo often has better rates than onsite and with QS it is really easy.

Using a debit card to rent a car is dangerous.

The rental company could put in for additional charges without warning, for example if they alleged hidden damage to the car, and more money will be taken out of your account and checks you wrote could bounce.

If all you ahve is a debit card you have to take that chance, but it is far better to use a credit card.

I will check out Dollar as well. I'm going the beginning of November and have to rent a car using a Mastercard debit card. I checked most of the major rental companies and most do not take them. Payless is one that does, but I don't know anything about them. If anyone has any knowledge or experience with them, let me know. Also, Payless requires that debit card renters MUST take the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), which is $13.99 a day (which works out to about $100 on a week's rental). But I was planning on getting that anyway, because if anything happens to the car and you don't have CDW, you pay for it, which would probably end up costing a lot more.

We rented from Dollar from Sept. 15th to the 29th and used a debit card. We had no trouble at all. They did put a hold of the rental plus 15% on my visa debit card. The hold since we were gone for two weeks did not stay on our account the whole time. When we returned the car they just handed me a receipt. If you keep track of you checking account, we check ours everyday online, you should have no problem.

Enterprise does indeed take debit cards. At least in NH. We've used both Alamo and DOllar for cars, and haven't had a problem.

Hi Bootc3-
When they (Dollar) put a hold on your card of 15%
was it 15% of the weekly rental? I don't mean to sound
stupid, but I was thinking 15% of a total week's rental
(example:$118.00 weekly..15% is roughly $17.70)
Is that all they take?118.00 plus taxes, plus about 25.00 more??
So I can't imagine that they would put
a hold on my cc/money card for about 150.00? Am I thinking the
wrong way? Or in this case of 118.00, do they tack on a hold of
another 200.00? Is it 15% or 200.00, whichever is higher

They hold the amount of the rental plus 15% of the rental, the minimum being 200.00.
It is totally spelled out on their site.

The hold was for the total including taxes plus the 15%. In our case our total for two weeks was $266 including taxes and fuel. They put a hold of $305. Hope this helps

Thanks Boot..This gives me an idea of how much they will hold for a week..
thanks again:)
