10/4/08-Buccaneers Take the West! Cruiser List in Post #1

I live in Louisiana in the Mid Western part of the state. At this time, they still have us in the projected cone of landfall. If it stays that way, we will be heading further north to Shreveport on Saturday and staying with the kids.

We rode Hurricane Rita out and was standing on our front porch when it came over our heads! It wasn't the hurricane but the aftermath that was a nightmare. No milk, eggs, coffee, bread, ANYTHING for about a month! Sitting in the FEMA lines. It was scary! I won't stay again.

we weathered Hurricane Fran in 1996. We lost 22 trees, and had $102K damage to the house. Wynn and I lived in the guest bedroom for 16 months. The worst part of the aftermath for us was no power or water for 11 days. We had to run the generator every 3 hours around the clock to keep the fridge and freezer going. We were bathing in our neighbors swimming pool. Usually by the time a hurricane reaches us it is flooding and possible tornados... basically a big pain. Fran was terrifying!

Denise - will be thinking of you. I hope that you won't be affected by Gustav.

Lori - it won't be long before you're under a month. And then that month just flies by :rotfl: . All the waiting and waiting and now it's nearly here and I still have heaps to do  .

It's Friday here :cool1: .

My kids have school cross country today. It has actually not rained all week so they have been doing lots of catch up practice. I will be helping out with marshalling, but the teacher told me she'll make sure I don't miss either of their races. I think there'll be a bit of changing places so the parents can see the end of their kids races.

Hi Everyone
Denise - please stay safe with that nasty weather seemingly heading your direction. I tend to complain about the amount of snow we get up in Ontario and I often say that if I had been born on the other side of the border I definitely wouldn't live where it snows! People try to convince me that I would miss the change of seasons, but my response is always that if I missed it that much I could come visit:idea: If I have to come up with one good thing about snow...if it gets bad you can just stay in and avoid it (especially now, living where the shovelling is done for us!princess: )

So exciting that everyone's countdown timers are ticking louder :hourglass

Jacqueline-glad to hear Katie is improving. I don't think I mentioned that we have a bulldog/pug cross named Georgia that is about 5 months. Wow...what a handful! We previously had a Jack Russell, but Digby had nothing on Georgia:dance3:

Talk to you soon
Wendy

Denise - you will be in our prayers, as will everyone in Gustav's path. Please keep us updated if you are able.

Thanks for your thoughts, wishes and prayers everyone. I told Wendy that I went today and stocked up so I'm as ready as I can be. I'm just glad this didn't happen while we were out to sea because we would have been worried sick about everyone.

We will keep everyone in the path of these storms in our thoughts and prayer. Regardless of if you opt to ride it out or move out of it's path, please stay as safe as you can. It can be a very scary thing to do.

I am happy Katie is getting better.

Hope everyone else is recovering well from their health issues.

It will not be long and we will be on board and ready to party!!!! Lois

Kari- He decided that we dont have the money to go on a cruise, so he is convinced I am just playing and dreaming on the computer. :cool1: So I am off the hook for now, and the surprise will continue.
Off to work.

I don't think I could ever keep it up. I would spill the beans. I would love to do it with my grandkids but can't seem to get my daughter on board. May try to do Disneyland next summer but still don't think I can keep it quite. Lois

Bumping us to page 1

It is hard keeping the secret. All the cruise stuff is at work and the girls think I am crazy. Would love for them to know at times, would love to share the excitement, but then all the questions about how long and when and where.

Got to study for next test tomorrow, have a great night

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to check in. I don't know if you get The Weather Channel but when they said this morning that it could make landfall in Lake Charles, LA, that means just 1 1/2 hours south of me!

Ignore the star, that's our state capital of Baton Rouge however, I live where I put the X. As I said, an hour and a half from the gulf.

I can't evacuate yet because we're still waiting on my friend and my cousin that is going with me to be released from work. I will also have my 89 year old mother-in-law, my daughter-in-law's great grandmother, 84, with me. Oh and my cat! We're gonna look like the Clampets from the Beverly Hill Billies!!! LOL!

I am getting busy tying everything down that is outside and moving as much as I can inside. I'll tape windows today.

I probably won't leave until tomorrow. I'll try to post from time to time from my DS's house in Shreveport.

Hope you all enjoy a wonderful Labor Day weekend!

See you soon!

Hi Denise
Nice to see you can keep a sense of humour:thumbsup2
I have been watching the reports on TV and just can't imagine having to leave home to avoid the weather. Of course we have watched this happen many times on TV, but "talking" to someone it is actually affecting is a whole different ball game. As I posted earlier, we just stay indoors to avoid the nasty snow.

Please stay safe and when possible let us know how you all are doing!

Prayers and pixie dust!
Wendy

Just wanted to share some pictures my grandson made. I see a future job with Disney. He drew them free hand by just looking at a picture he already had. He did not trace them. I am sooooo Proud! Lois

Denise... I am praying for you. Hopefully it will not rebuild much after crossing Cuba, and will fall apart quickly upon hitting land. Is it packing a ton of rain? I haven't heard much about flooding associated with it, so maybe LA won't have much problem there.

Lois... those pics are awesome. He really did a good job!

Last night, DS10 had his birthday party-a sleepover with 4 of his friends. I have decided I want a shirt that says "I Survived a Slumber Party with 5 10- year old boys! I thought they would never go to sleep. They have all left now. Today, I am going to relax.

Hope everyone has had a great week. It has been crazy around here. DS13 has been going through growth hormone testing. The doctor called Thursday with results from his tests he had done at Vanderbilt last week. Normal growth hormone levels are above 10; his were 2.1. Normal vitamin D levels are 30; his were 20. There were other results, but to make a long story short, the doctor said he could help him. He is not so short (4' 11"), but his brother (DS10) is already 1/2 inch taller than he is. He is currently on 8 vitamin D tablets a day for the next 3 months. He is going on the 12th for another test as well as an MRI of his pituitary gland and brain. The doctor wants to do further testing before he decides on treatment.

Lois, the pictures are terrific!

For Denise and others who are in the Gulf Coast region, please stay safe. Our prayers are with you all.

Gena

Wow Denise, we'll add our prayers. Please keep us posted as you can. I've been glued to the news all day. It has just been amazing how this storm has intensified so quickly. It's one thing to see it as a spectator. I can't imagine watching it and knowing it was coming toward your house. It is somewhat encouraging to see that things appear to be going much more smoothly this time.

My sister was freaking out when I was telling her that there were two other systems out there. I told her this is just how it is when you cruise in October. You spend many anxious days in September watching the weather. It is so worth it in the end though.

I was looking through my "cruise folder" on the computer. I started a document that had the pics that you many of you posted in this thread. It would be great if more people could post their pictures. I would love to be able to put a face to a name even before the Dismeet. It will be fun to look at on the way down.

I think I may be staying close to home instead of going to church tomorrow. I have a severe sinus / allergy thing (which I thought was strep). The antibiotic is making my stomach hurt terribly. I may just take advantage of the quiet house and grade some papers. Who am I kidding? I'll probably be checking the boards and watching the news!

Off to bed!
Ginger

Ginger, sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. Grading papers is no cure for that, you need a cup of coffee and the computer to fix it. lol

I don't have a pic of myself that looks decent, but I'll look for some of my family.
Lori P. :)
