Way to go Poem Boy
So, what happened to your poem for yourself?![]()
Don't forget - Lent officially ends on Holy Thursday and Sundays aren't counted in the 40 days of Lent (a little liturgical loophole!)![]()
Where was this information when I was a kid and still Catholic?
BTW, what is the whole history behind the no meat on Fridays? Seriously, I know as a kid we never had meat on Fridays during lent, but never really paid much attention in Sunday School back then to know if there was a meaning behind it.
I'm Lutheran now and we eat meat on Fridays during lent.
We didn't know this when we were kids either, although I think we figured the Sunday thing out by high school.
Not sure about the no meat on Fridays thing. I was OK with that, because it usually meant pizza or grilled cheese/tomato soup, but it was barf time when my Mom made flounder (BLECH!!!)![]()

This is how I learned it. Not eating meat on Fridays is a form of penance. Also on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday we only eat one full meal, two very small meals, and no in-between meal snacks. Fasting and abstinence can be traced all the way back to the Jews of the Old Testament.
Lesson over. I hope it is correct.Maybe Kathy's brother can verify, although I am sure he gets tired of answering that question.
But Ash Wednesday and Good Friday wouldn't have been in the Old Testament time. But the reference to fasting may have been.
However, why is "meat" considered a form of penance and not fish? Just curious.

Back from a very LONG day. The rain certainly didn't help with normal Friday traffic either!
