10/15/2011 - Taking the West by Magic!

Since it is our first trip, we will probably get lost for a few hours trying to find our stateroom. Of course there is the Drink of the Day, and the Sail Away Party!party:
I think I will do something that I usually don't do when I check into a hotel--actually unpack and make myself at home in the room.

LOL! If it helps, I'll be lost as well! Perhaps we'll see each other wandering around. :lmao: I'll wave!

DF and I haven't talked about it much, but I'm sure we'll settle into our stateroom, go to the DISmeet, and watch the sail away party. DF is definitely looking forward to meeting our servers and tablemates and seeing what a DCL dinner is like. That's all we've got so far...

Last time we cruised in '09 they had those streamers that the kids (ok all of us) were waving around. Do they still have those? Thought I might have to do some googling to buy them to give out at our meet.

It's sort of hit or miss on the streamers. We had them on our Med cruise, but didn't on our Wonder 3 day.

You definitely want to unpack, there's not enough room in the staterooms to leave the suitcases out!

That's something else I want to try, we've always gone to the sail-away and been on the main dance floor, I actually want to try it up on deck 10 and watch us pull away from port, I've always missed it!

Hello to all you lucky Oct. 15th travelers.

Hope you all don't mind me hijacking your Cruise Thread to ask a favor. My family is taking our very first cruise and we will be on the Halloween Magic cruise October 29th and I was hoping to convince someone from your group to either PM or upload updated copies of the Navigators upon your return as you will be traveling right before us.

Also, if you can let us know if any of the upgrades have been done that we have all been hearing about (i.e. stateroom linens, iPod clocks in the room, Horn upgrade, etc.). I am so excited to find out any and all suggestions from your cruise.

We are going to be in room 6146 so if anyone has that room I would love to hear what you think.

Thanks in advance for any help. :flower3: Hope you all have a wonderful cruise and can't wait to read any of your cruise threads.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed on the linens, I'd love to get new ones in the rooms! I've never heard about a horn upgrade, and I love the classic horn, so I think I'd miss that if they changed it :cutie:

In any case, I'll do my very best to get you information, we're flying home the afternoon of the 22nd, so I'll have that Sunday to do laundry and mourn!

I usually don't unpack on vacation but I love how easy it is to effeciently unpack on the cruise. I think they have wonderful storage and they've thought of everything to give us plenty of storage space in the cabins.

We enjoyed the sail away celebration on our last cruise from deck 10 and we loved the view and plan on doing the same again. Of course, we've never experienced it from deck 9 to know the difference!

So to keep the cruise excitement going, what is everyone planning on doing their first day?

Aside from our 3:00 meet of course. Jillian and I have said we're going to order the cheese platter while we're unpacking. We also want to check out the sail away party, of course, and meet our tablemates and servers. Need to remind myself to call and request Okim and Mikey!

Along with the meet we plan to have lunch, let the kids check out their clubs, maybe swim, and of course start enjoying those delicious tropical beverages!!! I really hope that my kids, especially my 10 year old DD, make friends at our 3pm meet!

So what is your daughter like? Jillian is 10, will be 2 months from 11 when we cruise, and loves to read, do art, swims, plays piano, and is a Girl Scout. She tends to be pretty outgoing so I can have her keep an eye out for Alexis when she sees her around? I'm not sure how "10" Alexis is, if they're close together or at opposite ends of 10?

Alexis just turned 10 but is starting 5th grade tomorrow. She swims, dances, and like to horseback ride. I will post a pic just let me figure out how! She is not normally shy but may be on the cruise. Thanks for having Jillian keep an eye out for her!

Jillian started 5th grade this year as well, and loves horses (she went to horse camp for Girl Scouts this summer). So it sounds like they have something in common. If you like, and Alexis has an e-mail address, I can PM you Jillian's e-mail and they can communicate before the cruise? It might help her feel better?

That would be awesome!!

I hope they are talking about adding the second stanza of "When you wish upon a star," which the Dream has (and "Be Our Guest," "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes," and three more tunes!).

I guess it doesn't happen often, but when the Magic/Wonder and Dream get into a horn battle, the old ships start the song and the Dream follows it with the second line.

Here come the "newbie to DCL" questions again..haha....

What's "Tea with Wendy" and who are Okim and Mikey. ? I'm thinking you veterans may need to spill the beans on some things we DCL newbies should have on our "need to know" list! ;)

I have an Alexis also! She is pretty outgoing. Loves to dance, read, do art and is a Brownie/Girl Scout. She is 9 and mature for her age. Sounds like they have a lot in common. They should have fun.

Our last cruise was 11 years ago. We had a very long flight delay and literally made it onto the ship just in time to run for our life jackets and get to the drill. I am just looking forward to a much more relaxing entrance this time:laughing:

Sorry...still new here...was is the classic horn (horn upgrade)? Thanks!

I don't know much about the tea with Wendy except to go to Guest services...where everyone else will be and get tickets for it. From what I understand it is on the two days we are out at sea. Okim and Mikey...I have no idea!

The Dream plays other tunes beside "When You Wish Upon a Star" including the second line of that song "makes no difference who you are." Its signature song is "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" from what I read on another thread here at the DIS. It also mentioned that the extra songs are actually played on a speaker, not on the ship's horns
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o4F-ebnFvMo&feature=player_embedded

Some useless trivia: The first two notes of "When You Wish Upon a Star" are an entire octave apart. I guess it's pretty odd and perhaps demanding to play.

My guess is that they are a Head Server and Assistant who are very good at what they do.

What do I win, Don Pardo?:woohoo:

In order to upgrade the Magic's horn, they'd have to rip out the current horns. I'm not sure if the Dream horns are digital, but the Magic actually have the different horns that make up the notes to When You Wish Upon A Star. I do think that the Dream horn has a different "timber", so it just doesn't sound the same to me :cutie:

Tea with Wendy is an event that you can sign up for with your kiddos to go learn how to take a "proper tea" with Wendy and the Mad Hatter in Studio Sea. It's not really tea, it's apple juice, but it's cute for the kids. You do go to Guest Services to sign up as it's space limited. We've done it once, probably don't need to do it again.

And yes, Okim and Mikey were our server and assistant server on our Med cruise, we loved them! We actually got a picture of our family with Okim and Mikey, plus Raphael who was our Server on our Halloween cruise in 2008 (our assistant server Daniel went to the Dream), plus Brendan who was our server on our very first Magic cruise back in 2006! We saw Brendan coming into our first dinner, and he remembered us which just floored me! Either they have fantastic memories, or Disney does really good intelligence for those servers who've been with the company a long time to remind them of past cruisers :confused3, either way, it's really nice.
