10/15/2011 - Taking the West by Magic!

I totally understand! Plus I'm afraid if I do, they will have my birth certificates and it doesn't come in time..then I won't have those...and those I NEED! Pray nothing happens while we are there.

So glad I'm not the only one! :goodvibes

You're not alone. I haven't decided if I'm going to get one or not, yet, either. DF has been bugging me for months to go ahead and get one, because he wants to be safe, but I'm hesitant to shell out a lot of money on something I technically don't even need. Plus, I did not want to have to go through the trouble of changing my last name on it (since I'm getting married in a few weeks). If I do choose to get one, it won't be until the 6th or 7th of September, and I'll just take my chances and hope it arrives in time. :confused3

Dan and I just got married this last week - August 10th

Congratulations! :thumbsup2 I saw your avatar picture and assumed it was from the wedding; you two look very happy!

It is my guess that other than the ships lights, there will be very little light to interfere with stargazing, especially when we are at sea. So I looked into what kind of meteor showers we would have on the cruise.

From EarthSky.com:
October 20 and 21, 2011 Orionids
The rather large waning crescent moon obtrudes somewhat on this year’s Orionid meteor shower. Although the moon doesn’t rise till after midnight, the Orionids usually wait until the wee morning hours to pick up steam. Despite the moonlight, meteor enthusiasts may want to give the Orionids a try anyway. On a dark, moonless night, the Orionids exhibit a maximum of about 15 meteors per hour. These fast-moving meteors occasionally leave persistent trains and bright fireballs. If you trace these meteors backward, they seem to come from Orion’s Club, or north of Orion’s bright, ruddy star Betelgeuse. The Orionids have a broad and irregular peak that is difficult to predict. More meteors tend to fly after midnight, and the Orionids are typically at their best in the wee hours before dawn. The best viewing for the Orionids in 2011 will probably be before dawn on October 21 or 22, though the waning crescent moon may somewhat tarnish this year’s Orionid display.
I was hoping that we might be able to see some shooting stars while enjoying POTC on the Ariel-vision, but it seems the moon will make it hard to see any. I guess it won't hurt to keep an eye out all week long, anyways.

The sliver lining is that the best time to look will be on the early mornings of our last two days aboard. Wouldn't it be nice to make a wish on a shooting star on the last morning of the cruise?

I already know what I am wishing for!::yes::

Very interesting, Onkel Hans, thanks for posting this! I used to own a telescope and stargaze, but that was years and years ago. However, now I'm going to have to make a note to look out for a possible meteor shower. :thumbsup2
DF has been on two cruises before and he said the view of the stars can't be beat aboard a ship, so I'm pretty excited to experience it for myself.

Wow, I head to the lake for the weekend and you guys are super busy!!! (I first wrote "got busy" but that just didn't sound quite "Disney" :rotfl2:)

Hans, you know what's weird? I can't even remember whether or not you can see the stars really well at night, maybe because we're always in the cabaret and then go right to bed! Since we're watching POTC this year, we'll see some for sure!

Tinkerbelx, we went on our first cruise in 2006, so it was ahile ago, but that's the only experience I have with the turtle farm. Now, our friends didn't do the excursion, they just had a cabbie take them around, so maybe it's the excursion folks don't like? Our friends said the farm was good for little kids, our daughters were 5 when we sailed so that may be it.

Me too! we can't wait 2 months to go and i have already started packing.

I also got some great cheap princess dresses for Sienna at Babies r us. 27.99 and they are really nice they had infant sizes all the way up to 4t. Disney store only has size 2/3 and up....if anyone is looking for formal night.

Speaking of packing, I'm thinking about what to bring for formal night. Do many men really wear a tux? What about the ladies? Sorry, I know this question gets asked all the time, but I really wanted to get some ideas from this group. Thanks!

This is our first cruise so I have no prior experience. Jim is just planning to wear a suit and tie. My dresses that I'm bringing for any occasion are all materials that are "packable" (not fabrics that will wrinkle). THey're all long and can be dressed up or down so I can make them more formal or less casual.

thanks - looks like just 15 more days for you (per your signature name tag thingy lol) :yay:

Haha, yeah, we're 15 days out. I actually thought DF and I were going to be the only ones who were taking a slightly delayed honeymoon, so I'm glad to see there's a break between you guy's wedding and trip, as well. I'm actually starting to like that we get a little time to settle down before we go on the cruise.

I know I am planning on getting a dress when all the stores start to put out their homecoming outfits for high schoolers. I perused through some yesterday and saw that they weren't horribley priced, but even doing that I will probably border on the not-so-formal side. (I'm probably going to stick with something short) :confused3 I just don't feel like packing a lot of fancy stuff. I think, though, with all things clothes, it's a matter of opinion and desire. Some people really want to go all out and enjoy themselves. Normally, I find getting all dolled up fun, but since I'll have spent my wedding like that, I'm taking the formal night a little easier.

I know DF is wearing his military service dress. To me, that's not too formal, but he has worn it on another cruise's formal night, so I suppose it works. He put his foot down right at the beginning and said he wasn't wearing a tux.

I went back and read what I wrote and realized I was really unclear. Sorry if that's confusing.:sad2:

I think suit and tie will be nice. You see a few tuxes, but not a lot, and you'll see a lot of people who don't dress up at all. I've got a maxi-dress from my last cruise, and Jillian has some nice dresses although her feet have grown so we may need new shoes, so we'll be dressed nice, but not super formal.

Alicia, I think military mess dress is just as formal as a tux, maybe even more so! (Air Force brat, I just remember my dad wearing his, and when he did, my mom wore a really nice dress usually with shoes to match!)

And to Shannon and Alicia, congrats on your weddings!!!!! Are we ever going to see you on our cruise? ;)

I, too, love the idea of military dress! I always see it as formal. Kind of like Jim's FD "Class A" Uniform. I doubt I'd get him to bring that! :lmao:

I have to say i saw the same thing, a few tuxes and a few evening gowns the people who do dress up are mostly wearing suits and cocktail dresses, floral print dresses and black long dresses.

I also agree military dress is considered formal and i love it!
My hubby will be in suit and tie for both formal and semi formal night. I am packing a gown for formal and cocktail dress for semi formal. We don't get to dress up much and any chance i get the princess princess: in me can't resist!

Some men do wear tuxes and some men wear suits = preference and comfort. Yes some ladies wear very formal dresses and some wear very nice dresses again its the what you feel comfortable wearing and bringing aboard.

I believe we only have 1 formal night and one semi formal night.

Dan will be in a suit and tie for formal and semi formal night. I don't have enough reasons to dress up so I have dresses for every night. a ball gown (not crazy puffy, still has to fit in a suitcase after all) and a shorter dressy dress (yes i'm making up words) for formal and semi formal evenings respectively and then cocktail/sundress type dresses for the other nights - pirate costumes still in debate lol. I am aware that I will likely be overdressed in comparison but, hey, I wanna be a princess too!princess:

and yes, there is quite a gap in between wedding and honeymoon - originally it was only going to be a few hours between the two but then we decided a crazy big wedding wasn't our thing and eloped :rolleyes1: besides, left way more funds for the cruise!
