10,000 Leagues Under the Sea/Submarine Ride (or something like that)...

There was a ride in Disney where you boarded a 'submarine' that went under the water. I don't remember specifics but vaguely remember a ride like this once upon a time. Anyone remember it? When did it close?

It was 20,000 Leagues under the sea based on the Disney Film that was based on the novel by Jules Verne (a classic peice of science fiction and a great film too). It was located in Fantasyland around the area that is now New Fantasyland (7DMT).

The ride loaded you into Nautilus subs to look out portholes on either side at the scenery. The ride system si sthe same as the still operating Submarine Voyage at Disneyland (now Finding Nemo themed). The subs at Disneyland though are yellow conventional style subs, not the sci-fi Nautilus style ones.

It closed due to maintenance issues I believe, sometime in the mid-1990's.

I have vague memories of it too. I remember being in the boat and loving the view...and remember how cramped it got.

For the record, it went neither 20,000 nor even 10,000 leagues under any body of water. It was more like 5 feet, or 0.000274298 leagues.

Ah, but the 20,000 Leagues doesn't refer to depth, but rather to distance traveled. 20,000 Leagues down would be far, far deeper than any ocean on Earth could possibly be.

Good point! And one that I did not know (even though it was apparently in the link I posted)

Yeah, it's a common misunderstanding that I once believed too. Just remember that fathoms are a measure of depth.

"Where Triton is king and the mer-people sing, in mysterious fathoms below."

DH and DS rode it on our first trips to WDW but I never did (due to claustrophobia :sad2:).

I did get these shots though back in the pre-digital era.
