*1/3 New Trip Report* Pole Dancing and Food Porn

Shann - I feel your pain with the Columbia SC airport. I live in Columbia (well, Lexington, actually) and have had so many problems trying to get out of that airport! LOL - South of the Border! Go Pedro!!

I was so excited to store there when we drove to Disney in 2007. I hadn't been there since I was a child and I remember it being so much fun. Needless to say when we got there we used the bathroom and got a drink. WHAT A LET DOWN! It was AWFUL!!! It was so run down, deserted, and tacky. Well it was always tacky I guess it got tackier if that is even possible.

Ok sorry to highjack your thread, on with the show!

I understand what you are saying....I am a sucker for a nice room.....so I get ya! :thumbsup2
Love the happy faces on ME! :) Now the return trip to the airport.....:sad1:
I remember stopping at SOB on one of our trips to Florida when I was younger. We used to drive down (my Grandmother lived in FL) every year in the Spring for 2 weeks. We would usually go to a Disney theme park (back then there was only MK and Epcot) for a day or two. I remembered stopping there (SOB) and thinking I was in another country....I have no idea how old I was!

Tracy

Your kids look so excited.

Enjoyed your review of the ASMu family suite. I'm interested to see what you think of the Poly. The Poly is just wonderful :cloud9:

Let's just say that my review of the Poly will be totally different! :love:

I'll tell you the difference in value to moderate is significant, you can't really compare value to deluxe, there is just no way.
If it's the only way I could go, yes, I'd stay value, but as of late we've been able to stay on our points. Let's just say I'm spoiled......

I'd really like to stay moderate to see what I'd think. I have a feeling we won't stay value again. I'm interested to see how OKW & SSR are in December, since we're seriously considered DVC. (I just realized how full of acronyms my posts have gotten... :rotfl2:)

LOVE the coordinating shirts!! YAY!! :thumbsup2 Don't apologize for stating your opinion. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion--if everyone thought the same way about the resorts, they'd all be staying at the same place!! :goodvibes Right?! ;) I'm with you on your review--I don't like staying at hotels with doors opening directly to the outside either. And I just LOVE the Poly--the theming--everything about it!! Can't wait to hear your review on staying THERE!! :flower3:

OH, just wait if you liked those coordinating shirts.... I went a bit crazy!!

I've been lurking. When you mentioned SOB I immediately thought of this...
Taken on our way to Disney in 2007.

That's *exactly* what the theming reminded me of!!

I'm a snob too. But Brian keeps me in check financially a little bit. He's an admitted hotel snob too. We were actually very happy at POFQ the last time, but now we have an extra body with us. We thought about the suites for a second or two, but had to go Poly.

I cannot wait for your review of Poly. I totally appreciate your honesty and am looking forward to the rest of of your TR. We leave in two weeks- so just tell me, will a snob like the Poly? :)

You will love the Poly! There were some things that bugged me, but overall it was great. I'll definitely be posting things about the Poly soon. I just have to get through our Downtown Disney night (next post) and we transferred to the Poly.

Shann - I feel your pain with the Columbia SC airport. I live in Columbia (well, Lexington, actually) and have had so many problems trying to get out of that airport! LOL - South of the Border! Go Pedro!!

Hey! No way!! I grew up in Lexington. Go Wildcats :cheer2:

It is absolutely tacky. I remember loving it as a kid and begging to stop there. My dad refused! :lmao:

I understand what you are saying....I am a sucker for a nice room.....so I get ya! :thumbsup2

Tracy

Hmmm....what other country would that be? Tack-a-vania? Mexi-NO? (Okay, I crack myself up....)

So, now that I'm a self-confessed snob, we can move on.

Once we got a bit settled in our room, we decided to head out to Downtown Disney. I was a bit worried about this night because my mom had decided to just rent ECVs in the parks instead of the whole time.That meant that she was walking tonight. I promised myself that I'd watch her carefully for fatigue.

We jumped on a bus immediately. On this first night, I was surprised how quickly we got a bus. But I soon realized that all buses went to Downtown Disney! :lmao: Okay, maybe not, but honestly, lots of buses went there! Sam is convinced that you're better off taking a bus to DD to be your hub of transportation than anywhere else. Obviously, Mickey wants you to spend money.

Please ignore my behind in this picture!

DSC_0030.jpg

The kids loved the birds outside of the Rainforest Cafe.

I saw a lot of places that I would have loved to visit if I was by myself. Unfortunately, our DDP hadn't started yet, so I steered clear of Goofy's Candy Store. I wish we had thought to go again because that seems like it would be a fantastic use of snack credits.

The first place we went was Once upon a toy.

DSC_0032.jpg

(What's the deal with all the pictures of my butt?)

DSC_0033.jpg

The Tinker Toy theming is so cool! Lily was determined to visit the Design your own Pony and I had promised her that she could. She got her box and put in a pink pony. She wanted 2 ponies (one for her best friend), but I told her to save her room. She got the costumes she wanted and we went up to the desk. At the desk was a lady from England named Patricia. She looked down her nose at Lily's neat little box and asked, "Are you sure that's all you want?" I kind of stared and said, "Well, she wanted 2 ponies, but I told her there wasn't room." I swear she rolled her eyes at me before she said, "Would you like me to help you stuff it some more?" That woman proceeded to stuff 2 ponies and 2 of everything else in that little box! Several things there were actually 3 of!! When the box was finished it looked like it had been through a war. I guess Pony-box stuffing isn't my expertise! :rotfl:

We passed by World of Disney and side-stepped Stitch when he tried to spit on us.

The sun was going down at this point. It was really beautiful.

Our next stop had to be the Lego store. Morgan's comment, "I've been dreaming of this moment forever!"

Notice Lily's pose. You're starting to get the idea of the pole dancing to come, I hope.

DSC_0064.jpg

NOW we're getting somewhere. She's getting warmed up...

DSC_0069.jpg

Work it, girl. Show that belly!

DSC_0070.jpg

Oh yeah, the casual look.

By this time, Mom is tired and it's about 20 minutes from our ADR time so we decided to make our way to Fulton's. And, coincidentally, I'm at my image limit! So, Fulton's will be my next post!

Up next: What's the best thing I've ever eaten?

Thanks for the trip report - I am enjoying it.

I have a 6-year-old who we just learned likes to swing from the polls on Disney transportation. She also poses for pictures too.

Lily is getting her groove on, that's for sure. What a cutie she is! I'm glad Morgan's life is now complete that he has been to the Lego Store. Did he make a purchase?
Can't wait to hear about dinner!

The kids look very cute in their shirts.....:cutie:

Originally, I had thought we'd try Earl of Sandwich since we weren't on the dining plan yet. But my mom saw the description of Fulton's and she thought it looked good. She's lost a lot of weight on chemo so we were in the business of fattening her up on this trip so I made an ADR. :lmao:

The restaurant does look really pretty at night. It's in an old boat so it's on the water and it's all lit up.
DSC_0078.jpg

We checked in about 7:40 for our 8:00 ADR. The hostess told us that it would probably be close to our ADR time before we could be seated. That was fine since we really just wanted someplace cool for Mom to sit down. We ended up being seated at 7:50.

They brought us some bread and crackers with boursin cheese spread immediately. The waitress was really great and did a good job.

Granmouse ordered the crab cakes. "Blue Crab Cake - Sauteed super lump crab cake, pan seared with cucumber salad and Fulton's mustard sauce. - $14.95 " (I don't know why I don't have a picture of it?) She said they were good, but not as good as hers. She grew up in Maryland, so she's pretty picky about her crab cakes. This started her quest to find good crab cakes in Disney.

Lily ordered the chicken fingers. "Chicken Tenders - Served with fries. Mashed potatoes or seasonal veggie may be substituted for French fries. - $7.95" She substituted corn for the fries. It was plain old chicken fingers and she ate them.

Grammie ordered the scallops appetizer as her meal. "New Bedford Diver Scallops - Pan seared, with a melange of sauteed mushrooms, peppers, spinach and served with balsamic red pepper sauce. - $13.95" She also ordered a side of asparagus. She said that everything was too salty. The asparagus was charred too much on the outside. (I got asparagus too and I agreed with that. Although Granmouse finished Grammie's asparagus and she liked it.)
DSC_0083.jpg

Morgan got the macaroni and cheese. Mac N' Cheese - Elbow macaroni with creamy cheddar cheese topped with cheddar Goldfish. - $6.95 He really enjoyed the Goldfish on top!

Sam and I got the Crab & Lobster Experience. Ultimate Crab & Lobster Experience for Two - Almost 4 lbs of steamed crab and lobster with Alaska king crab, snow crab, Golden crab, and 1 1/4 lb. Maine lobster, with hash brown potatoes and grilled asparagus. $42.95 per person, minimum two people.
It was good - nothing special, but steamed crab and lobster. I loved the king crab, and Sam really liked the snow crab. Morgan helped Sam eat the skillet of hash browns, so I didn't really get to taste them. It was a lot of food!
DSC_0082.jpg

We didn't order appetizers since we weren't on the dining plan yet, but we did go for desserts.

Morgan & Lily got their first of many Make Your Own Sundaes, and they enjoyed them.
DSC_0084.jpg

We ordered two creme brulees to be shared by the four of us. "Milk Chocolate Creme Brulee - Our classic milk chocolate custard, dusted with sugar and caramelized into a crispy candy glaze, topped with fresh berries and whipped cream $8.95"
DSC_0086.jpg

We almost ordered one because we were all so stuffed, and OMG am I glad we didn't. This is plain and simple- one of the best desserts I have ever eaten. It was just delicious! We ate both of them in no time!!

This meal cost us $226 for the whole table. I did use what was left on my Visa Gift Card for part of it (about $100) but my mom picked up the tab for the rest. So, you won't see this in my final totaling of the trip cost. (Nor will you see our Downtown Disney purchases since I used the Visa Gift Card for those too.)

Bottom line on Fulton's:
I can't really recommend Fulton's for dinner based on these prices. It's awfully expensive for what was just a so-so meal. I would, however, whole-heartedly recommend going there for dessert. I'm planning on heading back for more creme brulee the next time we go.

Coming Up Next: Transfer to the Poly and Magic Kingdom Day! Will Lily ever stop talking about meeting those blasted fairies??

WOW!!! What awesome posts!!!!!!!!!!:goodvibes

I love love your lego store pics, and I love the candids of your kiddos just kiddin' around! Your quips along the way are also very very funny :) The Pony story, and the clerk... FUH-KNEE!!!!

I always wondered about Fulton's -- thanks for sharing!

I also agree with you about the resorts. We stayed at our first mod this September get-away... the rate was hard to beat, but it wasn't like a deluxe, like you say, and I also was disappointed with the room theming... the AC unit was weird to have again in the room, too... BUT regardless it did feel Disney. And we liked the grounds... the Values seem so cute, with all their larger than life stuff, I think my kids would love that part of it -- me, not so much... But like you say, for the price it can't be beat -- I guess I have been lucky, and my trips have spoiled me, too. :blush: I think you will like SSR and OKW. We did :)

Cannot WAIT for more!!!! popcorn::

Morgan's comment about the Lego store is too funny!
The Creme Brulee looks so good!
Cannot wait to read about the Poly. It's such an amazing resort.

Lily will be 6 in January so maybe it's a 6 year old thing. Yes, that was the pole dancing she was doing! And it almost turned into a lap dance several times!

HA! Mexi-No! That was a good one! :) I'm joining in for this one, for sure.

Welcome! I'm glad you like my goofy humor. My husband just rolls his eyes at me most of the time...

OH yes, she is quite sure of her cuteness!

Can't believe I didn't post about the Lego store purchase. It took much negotiating. He ended up with a Lego set:

The deal was that he couldn't open it until we got home. (Which you'll all see soon was not a problem at all!)

That Once Upon a Toy clerk was amazing. I couldn't believe how much was it that box!

I think I've just been spoiled by staying Deluxe first. The kids did love the big icons at the Values, and I'm sure they'd love the sets at the Movies. We were only at ASMu for 2 nights, so we didn't really get to explore the rest of the place. We were going to swim on our last day, but it turned out to suddenly get cold so we didn't get to.

Morgan's comment about the Lego store is too funny!

Cannot wait to read about the Poly. It's such an amazing resort.

Morgan definitely has a way with words. He's my drama king for sure! I'm pretty sure I have more quotes from him coming up.

Great pictures! That creme brule.. mmm.
That creme brulee was amazing! I'm glad my pictures are okay. I was worried that they were too big, although not worried enough that I went to the trouble of making them smaller. :lmao:

I guess I'm on a roll so I'll go ahead and post another update. It's easier on the weekend to have time to think!

We got up the next morning at around 6:00 (our normal school time). Grammie & Granmouse were sleeping in the "dormitory" with the kids. I jumped in the shower first. Usually I wash Lily's hair, but she was determined that Grammie had to do it, so they went into the other bathroom. Sam, of course, was coaxing whatever coffee he could out of the smallest coffee-maker I've ever seen. Seems like if they designed the family suites to hold 6 people they'd put in a coffee maker that makes more than 1 cup of coffee! :confused3

We had decided the night before that it was going to be easier to take a cab to the Poly that morning than to worry about buses. I was completely paranoid that we would not get checked in in time for Rope Drop so I wanted the fast way rather than the cheap way. We took our bags to the bag stand where they tagged them for transfer to the Poly and they called a cab for us. It arrived in a few minutes and we were at the Poly by 7:15'ish. (It cost $16 for those of you who were wondering.)

The kids wondered off with Sam to explore a bit while I went to check us in.

DSC_0094.jpg

DSC_0096.jpg

I just love the theming at the Poly! We had eaten at Ohana the last time we were at Disney, and Sam & I both agreed that we had to stay here. I love the plants in the lobby, the smells, the sounds of the waterfall~ everything about it.

I was a little annoyed because the concierge had assured me that someone would be at the desk, but it worked out okay because there was a very good CM at the regular check-in desk who helped us. Obviously, our rooms weren't ready, but we left Sam's cell phone number and picked up our KTTW cards.

We decided to pick up breakfast in the concierge lounge before we headed off to the MK so we headed down the path to the Hawaii building.

DSC_0097.jpg

DSC_0100.jpg

Along the way we met this fella. Little did we know that he was the first of thousands to come, but the kids were pretty enamored with him.

DSC_0102.jpg

The concierge lounge at the Poly is just gorgeous. We stayed concierge at the Beach Club last time, but the lounge there is tiny ~ basically the size of a hotel room. We were completely blown away by the one at the Poly. And the view!! Amazing.

DSC_0104.jpg

DSC_0105.jpg

After grabbing breakfast, we headed off toward the MK and our first monorail ride. By this time it was around 8:00 and I was busting to get over there!

DSC_0108.jpg

Who wouldn't want to move into this place?? Honestly, not being able to stay here again is one of the only thing that's keeping me from being totally on board with DVC.

DSC_0110.jpg

Here comes the monorail!

DSC_0112.jpg

Yes, my eyes are closed, but it's our first monorail ride! Notice that Lily is sitting down so nicely here. Remember that for later on in the week! ;)

We were on our way to the Magic Kingdom!!

Any chance you might post more? You are on a roll....:rolleyes1

Loving it!

A fellow hotel snob,

Mrs. Spratt

ps - You posted the first pic of the Poly that makes me want to stay there!

Love your Poly update. We were in the Hawaii building last year and LOVED every minute of it. Your update makes me want to change my AKL CL ressie to Poly CL :love:

Fist of all, cute, cute, cute outfits on the kids. I love the matching khakis! Lily's shirt is adorable, but I can't see what Morgan's has on his.......
Yes, the Poly is just out of reach for us since we have joined DVC, that is unless they run some amazing deal. Then we just might get to stay.....

I'll make a deal with y'all. I'll post more today if you'll go over to my pretrip and give me advice. I have a dilemma! Deal?

Oooooo....which picture was it? I have more that will make your jaw drop!

It's so incredibly beautiful! Wait until you see our other pictures. I just can't imagine loving anyplace more!

Thanks! Morgan's shirt is the one that was supposed to be his dad's that stupid etsy woman messed up on so it doesn't really fit the theme for the day. Sam is actually wearing the one that Morgan was supposed to wear for MK. Morgan's has Goofy (his favorite) dressed as Darth Vader. (see how it would have fit DHS??) Sam's just has Goofy on it (and it was supposed to be orange...)

Things I should be doing today:
  1. laundry
  2. grading papers
  3. cleaning
  4. making my kid do his homework
  5. making lunch
Things I am doing today:
  1. Uploading pictures to Photobucket
  2. Dis-ing

~~~~~
We got to the Magic Kingdom around 8:15. Grammie went to rent her ECV for the day and we wandered around taking in Mickey's Halloween decor.
DSC_0118.jpg
Anita, you can kind of see Morgan's shirt here.
Pretty soon it was time for the opening ceremony. I love when that music starts up. "magic wrapped up in pixie dust. Welcome to the place where dreams come true..." I just love it!! I can't believe anybody would be able to stay in bed when this is going on!
DSC_0127.jpg
DSC_0128.jpg
I wish I had gotten a picture of Lily's face instead of the ceremony. It was pure Disney magic. Her expression when all the characters stepped off the train was amazing. Granmouse and I looked at each other over her head, and we both got teary-eared. The magic is just so real to her!
When they started letting people in, Grammie was a little behind us on her ECV. I, of course, was completely intent on the Dumbo run! But suddenly I realized that Morgan was crying. He was sure that Grammie was lost and he'd never see her again. So, we stopped and Gram catch up and reassure Morgan before we kept going. Yes, we lost out on the first loading of Dumbo, but that's okay ~ everyone was together as we took our first walk down Main Street USA.
DSC_0131.jpg
(By the way, I' m apologizing now for my appearance in all of these pictures. It was HOT...no, wait, Marc, I'm supposed to say it was FLORIDA, right? I had my sleeves rolled up like some biker chick and my visor on my head. This is not my best look at all.)
DSC_0132.jpg
We got in line for Dumbo and ended up on the 3rd loading at 9:10 or so.
DSC_0137.jpg
DSC_0146.jpg
After Dumbo, we headed to Snow White. (no pictures...they didn't turn out). Lest you think she'd forgotten, through this whole thing, it was all about the fairies. "When are we meeting the fairies Mama? Is it time to meet the fairies yet Mama?" So, we sent the grandmothers over to the rope at Toontown Fair while we rode the teacups. (It was about 9:25 at this point.)
I'm the only one brave enough to ride the teacups with the kids. They really don't bother me, but they make everyone else sick.
DSC_0182.jpg
I actually kind of like this picture of the three of us.
DSC_0192.jpg
DSC_0194.jpg
We headed over to meet the g's at Toontown Fair and get in line to "meet the fairies"!! A CM named Marla was leading us and she reminded us over and over that we were to walk not run and follow her to the fairy line. I was in the front, and the grandmothers decided not to join the rush and wait for us outside the tent. As we headed toward the tent, some woman with her granddaughter came through and elbowed me aside (and I mean elbowed!) and pushed her way to the front. So, we ended up second in line. I seriously considering trying to take her out, but y'know "happiest place on earth" and all that!
Pixie Hollow was really cool, although I'm excited to see the new Pixie Hollow when they finish the Fantasyland expansion. The first fairy they met was Fawn, who talked to them about their favorite animals.
DSC_0198.jpg
DSC_0200.jpg
Then they met the girl Tink herself. She asked Morgan his favorite game to play outside and when he said Tag she played with them. It was cute!!
DSC_0203.jpg
DSC_0208.jpg
DSC_0209.jpg
She was quite amazed with Lily's shirt (Minnie dressed up as Tink) and loved that she, Tink, was on Lily's bows. There are some great photopass pictures that I'll share when I get the CD.
After we left Pixie Hollow, we took the tour of Minnie & Mickey's houses. I love the detail here, and I'm sad that these will be gone after the expansion.
DSC_0211.jpg
DSC_0212.jpg
DSC_0215.jpg
Then we had to go meet the great mice themselves!
We waited in line for about 15 minutes here.
DSC_0219.jpg
Minnie wanted Mickey to see her picture on Lily's shirt!
DSC_0221.jpg
Mickey had to kiss my hand because I was the birthday girl. (horrible picture!)
DSC_0223.jpg
We met up with the grandmothers outside the country houses. They were enjoying the benches. We decided to use our first snack credits here on some bottles of water, Sprite, & Diet Coke; and we watched the kids play for a bit on the area around Donald's Boat.
(Continued in the next post because once again I have too many pictures for this post.)
