Who's diabetic?

Me (I'm 4th generation type 2). And Jason swings between diabetic, pre-diabetic and not diabetic depending on his diet and how much he exercises. Kyle has reactive hypoglycemia. And Jason (and hence, our boys) are descended from an American Indian tribe that has the highest diabetic population ration on earth. :rolleyes1

I'm diabetic also, type 2. July 3rd will be 4 years since being diagnosed. Do you keep it under control pretty well?

My mom and both uncles had or have it, one has since died. My grandma and her sister both had it too. I'm the first of the cousins so far but I am the oldest so there should be more on to follow.

Well, my numbers are still higher than they should be. But, I was in the 500s for a little while there. So, there's improvement. I've been waking up with headaches a lot this week. Which tells me my numbers are high again. But, I forgot to take my pills a couple of times. So, that's not too surprising. :headache:

I wish there was a quick fix. I know they've made some progress curing type 1 in lab rats. But, anything to come out of that for humans is still a good long ways off.

Jason's brother is type 1. He wasn't diagnosed until he was an adult. He's now considered a "fragile diabetic". Especially scary because he has twin two year old girls and three step daughters now.

I don't check my numbers regularly at all. I used to, but I have learned what my body does. I do get my a1c taken though, my last one was 6.0!:thumbsup2 They have all been in the 6's and my Dr has been VERY happy with that. The 6.0 is my lowest yet. All I did was cut out the extra carbs associated with beverages. No pops, cool-aid, teas or anything with sugar in it. I learned to keep the carb level to around 40 grams per meal and you'll be fine. Just look at the carb content on a can of pepsi and you'll realize why I cut that out. I used to forget to take my pills too but now I just take them in morning so I don't forget. I make sure I them before I brush, it creates a nice habit. Another habit I got into is taking peanuts with me to work and munching on them till lunch. That is usually my breakfast, low sugar and high protien! :thumbsup2

A coworkers son was diagnosed type 1 when he was 24, he was always sick as a child and never could figure out why. Now they know. I worked with son last fall and noticed sores on his hands that never heal.:sad2:

Alpha Lipoic Acid is something worth taking as well. 200mg a day is the recommended dose. It's only$5 or so and my Dr highly recommends it.

Yeah, I'm the same way. I know what it feels like when my numbers start to climb. So, I don't bother testing too often. Great job on the 6.0! Before I went on my pills, mine was at an 8-something. :scared1: Haven't had mine checked in a while. I need to get back in and see the doc again.

I was over 13 when first diagnosed!!!

Yeah, Ian had the same thing. He had serious issues as a kid, but it went undiagnosed.
