I know what you mean. I will start 6 weeks in advance for grooming and a show groom takes me several hours from bath, to blow dry to trim etc. I do understand how the naming in show cattle works. It is not too different than certain breeds of horses. In dogs however it is a bit different. The kennel name, Calypso, in my case identifies the breeder and sometimes the owner to anyone looking at a catalog. If there are two kennel names it could be due to a co-ownership between two breeders, taking a stud puppy or purchasing a puppy from another breeder to add into your lines. In my breed the rest of the registered name will be a theme for the entire litter. The theme identifies the litter, or sometimes the sire or the dam. The breeder chooses the theme and all puppies are named accordingly. For example, I had a "Purr" litter and all pups had to have the word "purr" in their name. Kitty Kat is Purr-suit Of Purr-fection, her champion brothers are Purr-Cedes Benz, and Indecent Purr-posal.

Those who are really into it, and have plenty of disposable income, keep their show cattle in air conditioned barns during the daytime and turn them out at night. This helps keep the Black Angus' hair black (not sun bleached) and thick due to the cooler temps.

I don't even want to know how they treat horses. I've seen their barns in Kentucky. They would put many mansions to shame!

To the Parrotheads that responded to my inquiry about any one the cruise, how about getting together on one of the Castaway Cay days?
If there is any interest I will try to coordinate making it happen.pirate: argh.

Ooooh. Sounds like another fun get-together. Do you think DCL will arrange for a set of Parrothead music to be played or something like that?

Cool. This will be the something I learned today. I guess maybe because the litters are larger with dogs, it would be too difficult to incorporate the sire's and the dam's names into a unique name for every puppy. I think they do it with cows because often the sire is a big name bull (thru artificial insemination) and thus adds some name association to the calves.

Definitely, but sometimes a breeder will incorporate the sire's name or honor him by choosing a theme that hints to something of his name. I bred to a top winning male from Canada named CH. Klaasem's Zoom Zoom Zoom. So to honor him the theme of my litter was onomatopoeias :lmao: In dogs we also breed a lot via artificial insemination, either fresh chilled and overnighted or frozen semen and surgical implant. Sometimes the weather isn't conducive to shipping a girl across the country to breed to the male you need to breed to.

No different in dogs. It can cost well over 100K per year to campaign a Champion into national rankings and hold those rankings. The handler alone will run you over $2000 each month before bonuses and the ads in the show publications that all the judges receive cost between $700 - $1500 each, more for a front cover and if your advertising weekly... well, you can imagine. Daylight is also restricted on some of the coated breeds which helps them to grow more coat since the body thinks it is winter with less daylight.

Okay, you're gonna have to teach me two new things in one day. Probably lost me because I don't know what onomatopoeias means.

I guess that cost is acceptable if it's your full time job. For us it is merely a hobby, so there's no way we're dumping that much money in over the course of a year.

:lmao: Look at the bright side, you are ahead for tomorrow and don't have to learn anything new :rotfl2: Onomatopoeias are words that imitate the sound they represent, like, oink oink, meow meow, vroom vroom, quack quack :thumbsup2

Great idea! We were just on the Wonder and they were playing it in Parrot Cay during lunch. As the time draws near I will explore getting music provided.

So there are two of us, who else wants to join us?pirate:

If you quiz me on the ship, you must provide the word, then I'll try to remember the definition. Makes sense now. Thanks

PS Did anyone else know that word?

Usually the people involved at that level either have the disposable income or a find a backer with the disposable income. It was a hobby for me too and there is no way I could conceive of dumping that much money in a year :scared1:
