08/08/07 Well, Olbia Monkey's Uncle! We're cruisin' on the 10nt Med Cruise!

JeanieP and Scrapycruiser,

When you go to Rome are you bringing the kids? Also, are you planning on going to the Vatican? We are seriously thinking about canceling our reservation and trying this on our own. I just e-mailed the Bishops office to see if they will book a guided tour, however, I read further down they like groups of 20. I've also looked at the ICON site someone else suggested. Our excursion says 9 hours in the Vatican, I understand there's a lot to see, but I want to see some other sites as well (but I really don't want to miss the Sistine).

Also Nordkin - how can we all ever thank you!!!!!:flower3:

We are taking Jack to Rome. We hired a private guide...Romecabs.Gina:yay:

The best thank you everyone can give me is to come to the DIS meet, meet one another, and have fun. I am actually enjoying doing this and seeing everyone getting to know one another. The thread has definitely picked up. You guys are great and I can't wait to meet you.

We are thinking of doing this instead of Mysterious palmero. I guess the highlight of the trip was the catacombs and I was thinking we could do that on our own maybe.

I've been thinking about doing it on our own also. I'm just wondering if the DCL excursion has a guide. It might be worth it for us to hear the story of the catacombs instead of just walking through ourselves. That's my thinking anyway. I know some people have gone on their own and they said it was pretty easy (a bus or a train ride?? My mind is mush this morning).

We have decided to do Pompeii on our own. We're thinking of making this a half-day tour and relax by the ship's pool so we'll be ready for Rome and Florence. Anyone want to come along ? :grouphug: GINA

Hi Gina,

Have you booked your private tour of Pompeii yet? A half day excursion followed by relaxation at the pool sounds great. With all the excursions that the DISers have planned, some of which included back to back 10 hours tours, we'll need another vacation following the Magic just to relax and recoup. I thought this was going to be RR vacation. Not! I bet all the DISers will have one thing in common. We'll all forget something that we had planned to bring on the cruise at home. I always do and sitting at the airport is when I find out that I left the item at home. It never fails.

Robert

Here's a link to the train that my friend sent me. I don't know whether it's been posted before.

Clueless SanFran...thanks for the link.Rick Steves also has good directions for taking the train to Pompei. I believe this will be easy. We're sorry that we'll miss the Amalfi Coast, but to quote someone on this board, "sometimes less is more". For us, Barcelona, Rome and Florence are the highlights. Gina:grouphug:

Love your posts. :goodvibes First, to Vail and Scrappy -- yes, we are doing Rome truly on our own -- taking the train into Rome from Civatevecchia. We have decided not to bring the children -- very tough for me, but finally decided against it. We have been to Rome before, so we are going to just see a few sights that I must see again (Colosseaum, Forum, Pantheon) and then we will spend most of our time in the neighborhood of Trastavere -- shopping and eating our way through this quaint area of Rome. By the way, if any of you have children older than 10, make sure you save time to hit the Egyptian collection of the Vatican Museums if you are going to the Museums -- very cool and interesting and something that has really stuck in my memory all of these years.

Clueless and Scrappy -- you can EASILY do Pompeii on your own from Naples. My hubby and I (years ago when we were much younger  ) once used Naples as our jumping off city for many adventures. Yes, traffic in Naples can be a bit intimidating, but walk with authority and always act like YOU have the right of way. Finding your way to the train station in Naples will be exciting (and the hardest part of your adventure, if you call crossing the street hard), and once you do find it, there are train stops for all the great cities, including Pompeii (and Sorrento, and Herculaneum, etc). You can go on Trenitalia's website and print out the departo times -- feel free to ask the ticket folks for help as well. Once at Pompeii, you can see the sights on your own, or use a walking map tour or sign up for a tour. We did it on our own once, AFTER HOURS WHEN THE PARK WAS CLOSED(long story, let's just say that "closed" in Italy doesn't necessarily mean "closed" if you can come up with a good story, same true for churches and other monuments), and had a blast. If you can, make it up to the House of Mysteries (I think that was what it was called) where the frescoes are VERY interesting and controversial....I won't give it away, go see for yourself! Don't be nervous to do Pompeii on your own -- it is easy, you will save lots of money, and have a very interesting story to tell when you get back. It is always good to have an end to journey towards, but it is the journey that matters in the end! CHEERS! :yay:

We have also been to Pompeii on our own several years ago. It was very easy to do, but we did it from Sorrento. The ride up on the bus was a little scary with the turns and the bus having to back up to make the turns, but that was part of the adventure. It will be interesting to see if any of the older kids notice the symbol carved into some of the streets that lead to the house where the oldest occupation in the world took place. I was shocked when I saw it and the guide told me, yes that is what you think it is. We spent almost an entire day in Pompeii on that trip and this one will be just a taste, but at least I am going back. I can't wait.

Hi Gina, we are right there with you!;) After reading some of the other reviews and knowing how hot the afternoon sun is, we are going to attempt to do this on our own as well. We were thinking about heading out after breakfast, taking the train to Pompeii and then heading back to swim and relax. We would LOVE to tag along if that works for you.:yay: We tend to be early people (although the only time I've ever slept in has been the DCL cruises) and would be interested meeting anytime between 7:30-10am and heading out. Your thoughts?? :goodvibes If we get there and want to go our own way, that would be fine, just nice to leave and navigate the trains with others. It would be really great if we had a few families. I also agree, I would like to rest up for Rome.

This is really getting exciting, I can hardly stop talking about it and all that I am reading/learning!:disrocks:

I also found my gift today :cool1: so that stress is gone! :woohoo: Jocelyne

JeanieP and Nordkin, you both have been before, that's great. This is our first trip to Spain, Italy and this part of France, so all new to us.
I can't leave DD behind, she would freak and so would I. :scared1: That is one of our reasons for rethinking the Rome excursion. I want some freedom :hippie:

E-mailed the Bishop at the Vatican last night and his office has yet to respond.

Hi -

I have seen all the Navigators posted for the first 11-night med cruise, but does anyone know how the 10 night will differ? What show and menu will we not have?

Just wondering if anyone is planning to visit Monreale while in Palermo either through the DCL excursion or on your own. We'd like to do it on our own, but are not sure how easy it is to get there! Anyone have any info about this??

Jocelyne...Yes ! That would be great to share the adventure with you. We were thinking about leaving around 8:30 for the train. After Pompei we plan to take the train back to Naples and enjoy the ship . We would like to get a guide for the ruins. I've read where they get a group of ten and then it's only 10 E /pp. We'll get together at our DIS meet and firm up our plans. :cool1:

It's getting closer !!! GINA

I would like to know if anyone would like to have reservations to Palo on Thursday August 9th from 7-9pm? I have that time reserved for 3. I orginally booked it for my in-laws and my mother, but they have decided that since its the formal night they would rather spend it with the grandkids, so if anyone is interested, I will not cancel the reservation, and just change the names when I get on the ship.

Excellent, Gina - sounds perfect. :yay: 8:30 is great for us, the train schedule is 8:42, 8:50, 8:58, 9:16 - plenty to hop on when we arrive. I read the same - that you can get a guide there!

Have a great day everyone! Jocelyne

This reservation has been "claimed" by a fellow DIS'er I wish I could have helped all of you! Maybe I should have "auctioned" it on Ebay! LOL

Hi - I am new to this list - just having discovered it (and new to blogging). So please excuse - because I am not sure of all of the abbreviations. I am going on the cruise (this will be our 6th Disney Cruise) - along with my friend and her daughter (age 10). We would love to participate in the gift exchange. We are a category 4 - GTY.

Thank you for all of the information on the shore excursions - it has been very helpful. We had signed up for the catamaran trip in La Spezia - but last night Disney informed me it was cancelled. So, we are looking for something there as well as something outside Florence that focuses on Capri and maybe a bit of the surrounding area.

We are looking forward to meeting everyone.

Marj

:cheer2: WELCOME MVAN :cheer2:

We have quite a group here on the DisBoard ! Glad you joined us !!

As far as La Spezia, if you aren't planning to do Florence, one option is Cinque Terre. Very close so you could take the train and go on your own or DCL has a boat tour here that goes to 2 out of the 5 villages. We would love to go but chose Florence since it's our 1st Italy trip. Just do a search and you'll get lots of good info ! Hope to see you at the Dis Meet ! GINA

I have a question about the gifts. I noticed several families have more than one cabin. Will we give gifts to both cabins ? :confused3

Also, speaking of gifts, I had read a while back that DVC sends you a gift in the mail just prior to the cruise. Does anyone know anything about that ? GINA :wizard:

Gina - we have always received a gift for each stateroom. I am planning on one gift per stateroom.
