Halloween.......We set up outside in the wind and not quite the rain. We had almost 90 kids, as I had 90 bags of pretzels and almost all are gone. My pumpkin this year was an alien, because when we picked it out, it had a pointed nose. I wanted a green candle for it, but the one I purchased still looked yellow, so Sam got a green glow stick. I made chili and we sat outside with a beer, the firepit, chili and candy.

Most of the kids were great with costumes, some parents even dressed up. All the kids were good - most very polite.

A few observations that stand out.

1. The fire - we have found that 3-4 year olds are fascinated by the fire. They may never have seen it before and they are all drawn to it (there is a study here if you get me a grant). I always ask the parent if they want to go see the fire and we go close (not too close - although it is screened). They forget about candy for a while.

One parent said to his son - Do not go to close, the costume is made in china, it will burn. How cute! - The costume was a peekoman type.

2. The voice - we have a statue of a lady who becomes scary - and talks about the kiddies - come into my parlor concept. Some of the kids were startled - but the best were the 3 teenagers who were asking so very tough - really acting up (but not obnoxious) when the lady opened her mouth, one jumped 3 feet in the air. Then the oldest, not in costume, decided to grab a pretzel, reached over and she started up again. "S- this) and he walked away. Sam laughed his face off...of all the ones who could not cope - hee hee.

3. Most kids and parents walked. A few came by golf cart and one group came in a SUV - dumped out the kids and then picked them up. We did not like these groups. The strollers and hand made pull carts were fine, one was decorated. And one lady was walking with a 2 week old infant, her older son and hubby. Now that is dedication. I would not have done such.

4. The Candy - I gave out pretzels and was told that the kids would avoid our house. We had several utters of "cool pretzels" or "Daren - yoy have to get the pretzels", or the little girl who tossed her pumpkin of candy and cried, I wanna hold my pretzels. She was Cinderalla.

Finally, it began to rain - around 9:00 as I recall which was fine. We had one doorbell after we hauled the stuff inside.

So all in all a very nice night. Fun too.

Not saying that you have to, but if you want to read some funny happenings from my voting experience, check out the blog.

KikiKaren, you've heard most of them through facebook and have left your comments about the ridiculousness. So you're exempt. ;) ha!

Food and Wine - take 2

We were at the Festival Center shortly after 10:30 and started the day with a glass of bubbly - then wandered around the Food courts - I pledged that I would not try anything I had had the time before, so it was a subdued tasting. Still, as we had PFTS that night, I was a good strategy.

We met up with friends at 6:00 and waited with another 1491 folks for the opening of the event. The normal early craziness started but soon we were down to a rythem. Lots of good food to eat and drink. My favourtie was the duck, followed closely by the wildmushroom.potato offering. (it was supposed to have beef, but I forwent that.)

After the even we all headed to Boardwalk to the upstairs library bar where we sat outside and talked the extra hour away. A good time, and even talk of more scuba classes. Then we wandered around the secret cottages and alas parted ways.

Sunday we were at the Shrine for All Souls Day (very poignant now) and back to Epcot for "my favourite things" - the spatzle with mushrooms, Dorboun spiced chicken and the Baramindi fish.

We were home in time to unpack and relax before bed.

We did start some Christmas shopping at Epcot - all nice and appropriate gifts. But that is another story.

Elections - At least when it is over, I will not need to listen to the pre-recorded voices announcing this is "insert name here"...I really want you to go out and vote for me.

Actually, I have no idea what they say because I hang up.

Gotta love Facebook Mobile... it passes the time while stuck in line, in waiting rooms, etc...

We are Cypress Head, but we both voted Absentee. It's much easier to just go on line and request the ballot. Fill it out at home over a glass of wine. :rotfl:

Enjoy the party. I hope that one comes out in your favor.

I am SUPPOSED to be in Las Vegas tonight at an A-B meeting... but thanks to 'budget cuts', we cut back and only sent the two big bosses. That would have been an interesting place to be tonight, considering who owns Hensley & Co... :rolleyes1

I voted. I definitely picked the WRONG time to vote. Bruce went stand in line at 6:00 AM. Polls opened at 7:00 AM. He was done voting by 7:15 AM. I took the day off since the girls don't have school. The girls & I got to the polls at 10:30. It took us about 1 hour and 40 mintues to get through the line. Afterward we went to Costco. On our way home an hour later, the parking lot was EMPTY. Oh well.

OHMinnie, you had an interesting story. I can't believe that they are allowed to push their church. That doesn't seem right.

Interesting little tid bit that came to mind after reading OM's blog.

Our polling places have a dress code. Yep. If you wear anything with any kind of political statement on it, you get the boot.

I wonder if that goes for "My camel is smarter than your president" shirts??

:confused3 :confused3 :confused3

By the way, if it had said "My camel JOCKEY is smarter than your president", I would have known what that meant.
:lmao:

What about "Save the Elephants" - or "be kind to donkeys?"

It's amazing how different polling places are. In Louisiana we had huge voting machines where a curtain closed behind you. You flipped levers to vote, then when you were done the handle that opened the curtain, cast your vote. Not sure what they have now though since it's been 12 years since I lived there. I guess I never voted when we lived in NV. Here, we have touch screens separated by small partitions ... sort of what like Karen described having in OH.

Pretty sure I know who will win our area. Did I mention before that Emily's class took a vote a while back? The whole class voted for McCain with the exception of 1 child. That tells you who their parents are voting for. The entire school had an election yesterday. I don't think the results were announced yet though. I asked Ashley how she voted if she couldn't read the names. She said that there were pictures of McCain & Obama.

I don't know about any place else, but around here, they probably wouldn't "get it". :rotfl:

Jordan has the TV on, watching all the exit polls & such. I'm SO glad I'm going out to dinner so I don't have to listen to it all night.

Yeah, not a good night for TV. That's when Tivo comes in handy! We had no wait, though I did have to wait for Kevin to sign in. Yes, we went together, even though we split votes. Maybe when we've been married another 20 years we will vote for the same candidate. We have a dress code here, too, Stacey. It's probably everywhere.

It's kind of funny. Alicia and her boyfriend are definitely split on the candidates, though they have decided not to talk about it. The tradition continues! Difference is, he gets to vote and she can't yet.

Irene, what are the Secret Cottages? New one on me.

GOOD MORNIN ALL

still very warm up here

for now
this weekend will be alot different.

ITS OVER !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thats the only good thing

gaRRy

My thoughts...and really, it's not as bad as you'd think.

Normally, I don't worry too much about any President, since they usually have to fight Congress...but this time is going to be totally different.
I really honestly, truly hope & pray that the people who voted for Obama don't end up regretting it...for all our sakes.

One good thing, our kids & young people are witnessing history in the making, and they will have a lot to tell their grandchildren.

There....that wasn't so bad now, was it?

I have a question. And I'm not trying to be politically incorrect, seriously. I really think that someone of any color can be President. But how can we call BO the first African-American president? He's bi-racial. So he's as much African-American as he isn't African-American.

I mean, I'm made up of a bunch of things...Irish, Scottish, Hungarian, Polish, yada yada. But I don't go around calling myself a Hungarian-American.

:confused3

I agree, OM. We have talked about that here. I guess when you are a bi-racial mix of black & white, you get to choose. :confused3

Personally, they would be more correct in saying that he will be our first BI-RACIAL president.

In the end, it doesn't really matter what they call him. He is what he is, and there is no denying it.

And please, I didn't mean that in a bad way at all......

I read it in a bad way and agreed. :lmao:

Ok, gotta go. I'm back looking around for some change.
