05/09/2009 May 9, 2009 7-Night Eastern St Maarten... Watch Out!

Hello Fellow Cruisers,

Haven't posted in a while since I had to go out of town for my grandmother's funeral...

Today I am back at work and the lay offs have arrived. I seem to be safe, but it is happening all around me as I type this.

Still, I could really use some pixie dust if anyone has some to spare. I am scared to think I could be one of the next to be visited by an empty box.

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your grandma, your family will be in our prayers.

They also began layoffs at my work Friday. Seem to be ok for now, but like you mention one never knows! :scared1::sad2:

Lets keep our fingers crossed togther!

One of my best friends here just got let go. We went through training together and everything.

It is so scary hoping that when a manager starts walking this way I just pray they don't stop here. They have been going all morning now...

Hang in there! My wife was laid off in November, so I know how daunting it can be to try planning a cruise vacation with half your income gone! I wish you the best.

Second thoughts on this topic for you and/or your friend:
- If the hatchet falls, be sure to start pounding your network of friends on facebook and LinkedIn. Those are terrific avenues to quickly get word out and start moving your resume on to your next opportunity.
- When I was laid off by OpenTable.com during the dotcom bust of 2000-2001, there were 48 of us axed on one day in one office. It's a great opportunity to go out with everyone and have a drink immediately. You may not get another chance to get everyone together or even just have that moment to breathe after it happens. It helped greatly with the hurt too...cuz let's face it, no matter how many people go with you, there's always that 'why me, wasn't I good enough?' feeling and that can only be counterproductive in this situation. It's not a reflection of YOU at all and you (or your friend) shouldn't carry that weight into the job search!

I hope that was helpful...if not, just call me an a@$ and tell me to move on my way! :thumbsup2

Well, It looks like I may have made it through. (as I knock on wood)

I just went through watching the people who sit on either side of me having to pack up, though.

What a day! I just got back off of the leave for the funeral and this is my first day back at work! I am REALLY looking forward to May 9th now!!

Still, I am very relieved that I still have a job.

Congratulations. Sorry to hear about your work companions, but glad that you are still employed.

Hi
I noticed on the site for the layout of the ship that 3 rooms weren't highlighted in RED. ak1432--room # omitted, #2075 ( part of Royfam's group ) & 5522 (Scottie's room.)

Thanks
Eva

:scared1:I feel the pain of lay offs over here too!!! I work in the auto ind. here in Michigan and went from working full time to 20 or less hrs. a week. Now my Grandmother who watches my kids well I work was admitted to the hospital today due to no white cell count ( she has cancer and is going threw treatment right now). So to put my kids into daycare would cost me about 2/3 my pay because I have to pay for full time even though they would only go for about 4 1/2 hrs a day. I may have to take a leave or quit until I find something full time after our cruise:scared1:. On the upside it would give me time to plan, shop and work on FE gifts... ( Just trying to look at the bright side of things).:goodvibes

Are plans are to arrive at MCO on Friday the 8th. We have rented a car and will make a stop at the store on the way to the port. We are going to return the car the same day and just walk to dinner or eat at the hotel. We are staying at the Raddison at the port and plan to spend the day and night at the pool! We leave the 16th back home on a late flight so we might hit DTD or get a day room at the airport.

We are up for anything the first night!!! My girls have already told me that they want to play in the club the first night so I'm not going to argue with that!!!:cool1:

I am in the auto industry too, so I know all too well what has been going on! Keep your head high and work your fingers to the bone on those FE gifts! ;)

As for our room 5522 being in yellow, since we have two rooms we are just going to hang the FE Extender on one room (5524) and use that as a single collection point for any FE Gifts anyone may like to share with our crew that is split between the two rooms :)

We are using Happy limo as well. we're getting a 10 pass. van. There's 8 of us plus all are luggage. it was the best deal I could find. I got the tip from scott:thumbsup2

Anyone considering doing Kennedy Space Center before the cruise? There are two possible launches soon after we depart, which means there is a good chance a shuttle will be on the pad.

YenSid,

So sorry to hear about your loss. Our thoughts are with you. Glad to hear you were okay today at work.

We too are in the auto industry. So we understand the lows you are feeling. We just keep working hard and know this will pass eventually!

I think I will give Happy Limo a call and check on prices. There are only 4 of us but I might need the 10 passenger van too, with all my luggage!!!

Could anyone tell me where I can find the new Menus for the Disney Magic leaving on May 9th...

DisneyKricket

Howdy!

Based on what I have been reading recently, we will still have the "old" menus on our cruise. I dont think the new changes will hit the Magic until June, per a DISer who asked their server on a very recent cruise. Of course this is always subject to change! :upsidedow

If I can find the link talking about the new menus I will post it since they have some scans on there for the new items on the Wonder.

Update: here is the link to the thread running on the main board. I wouldnt mind seeing some of the new dishes that are discussed.

We are counting the days down like everyone else is doing... We arrive in WDW on friday around Noon. We are staying at the Port of Orleans... Does anyone know what time the bus will pick up at the resort to take us to the port on Saturday...

I hope that I get to meet some of you on the cruise...

Yes, I'm still waiting for our room number. We have a GTY Cat 12 and haven't been assigned our room number yet. I have heard that DCL starts assigning these around 30-35 days out, so it shouldn't be too much longer now! I'll post as soon as we find out our room number. ;)

Port Orleans French Quarter (or whatever they call it now) is one of our fav resorts at WDW... have fun, whichever side you are on!

Hopefully someone can help you with the bus info. Something makes me think I read the bus picks up approx between 11:30 and 12:30 and then about an hour drive to port, but I really am not sure on the pickup times?

If you think you may like to be at port early, you could consider a private transfer. Depending on the number of people in your party it could even be cheaper then DCL transfers.
