Has anyone heard anything about the dreaded hurricane probability for the end of August this year?? That is my one panic about this trip this summer?

I've seen a few threads with people worrying (more than usual). I honestly haven't paid much attention because we've been going at the end of August for 4 years and we're always worried about it when the trip gets close. Is it supposed to be exponentially worse this year or something?

We'll end up discussing it in here quite a bit. Basically though you'll worry about your flights and getting there but there isn't much to worry about while you are there. Orlando is in the middle of the state and Disney in particular was built to withstand quite an impact. They do have procedures in place, but haven't had to use them often. We got the outer bands if Ike last year and it rained like crazy but nothing closed. We just popped on our ponchos and hit the parks.
August disers are best off to get trip insurance.

I always try to keep in mind, though, that these news outlets are trying to sell the news to the public, so they'll be quick to hype up something just to give it a more exciting spin.

There was a news story on CBC national news saying it was going to be a more active year for storms and then gave a number oh how many tropical storms and how many what ever the next level and how many really bad level but of course that dosent' mean it will hit the us or if it does that it will hit Florida etc. I supose fo those of us who only see these storms on the news they seem so big and the destruction seems so bad and wide spread that it can't help but make us a bit nervous. I know there have been other years when they said it was going to be a bad year and then next to nothing as lets face it you can't really pridict to far out what the weather will be due to so many factors. I don't want anyone to have to deal with this type of terrible weather as we've all seen what it can do on a large scale. Fingers crossed for a typical August vaction and all those nasty storms stay well out in the ocean where they belong!
Ok now a question as typical August weather means afternoon rain so how well do your basic rain ponchos work when its raining and blowing? What's the best thing for your feet? I've been thinking walking sandles for the most part though DH doesn't do sandles and I have very wide feet so finding sandles that are for walking is proving a bit difficult for me. I was thinking that running shoes might be the best for me but not leather ones because my feet will over heat in those for sure. Even when we went last time at the beginning of March I had leather running shoes and my feet cooked. The girls will be ok with walking sandles and I guess they will be ok with getting their feet wet and then just letting them dry. DH and I might have to live with damp feet as I don't know how well even canvas running shoes will dry and we'll have to have socks. So what's everyones advice on this one?

We have a beach day planned in as well. Nothin' says summer like some sand and surf! Our travel dates are virtually identical to yours, except that we arrive one day earlier.

Yes, they are virtually identical. We are from Southern Alberta, so mountains to the west and wide open spaces everywhere else. What part of Canada are you from?

Southeastern Ontario, about half way (ish) between Toronto and Ottawa.

I have some friends who live in Edmonton. My son went to visit them three years ago, and fell in love with "Eddy" . Of course, that was during the summer months.....he might not enjoy the winters so much .

Hopefully it won't be too bad this year. Hitting the resort and take an afternoon nap/rest while the storms pass is our norm, so I am not so sure about the ponchos, otherwise when we unwisely got caught (because we thought we could get one more ride in before...) we would take shelter, wait out the worst and head out of dodge.

For footwear, DH doesn't wear sandals either, however, after a trip to MEC he found a pair of Teva sandals that he liked, that are great for getting wet and drying out. In his mind it was better of two evils, however a pair of the lighter mesh runners with quick technical socks may work. If you are looking for a pair for yourself MEC/REI have a few different brands that may work. Our podiatrist recommends the Keen brand.... and maybe some of the fully adjustable ones may work for you.

We are also in Southern Ontario (Niagara). My husband is set to finish his program in December and graduate and the employers from Alberta and B.C. are already talking to them about coming out there to work. Our kids are happy here and I am so close to my family. If DH had his way we'd be on a plane on graduation day.

I went to our outdoor specialty store and found some great walking sandals... That might be an idea for you?

That is a tough decision, the Niagra region is gorgeous, and it is so nice to be close to family (that is why we are back here). Also, you have buffalo close by, it helps for trips. Congrats on DH's school, it will be nice when it is done!

The best sandals for me are something like a Teva (waterproof ones). A flip flop gets a little too slidey if it's pouring all day. As far as ponchos.. For your basic afternoon thunderstorm a poncho is fine.
For that "outer bands of hurricane Ike" day I mentioned from last year? Nothing helped. In fact, Dh's poncho had ripped before we were even across the parking lot, ds's was too long and he was tripping over it, and it was so windy that the girls and I were soaked by the time we got to the turnstiles
The wind just blew the rain right under the poncho. Yeah.. we were soaked that day, but we had fun. These were pretty thick ponchos too. I don't think anything would have been better. Most days they did just fine.

Who do you remember this Memorial Day? You Northern Disers too.

I remember my Dad who was in the Army Reserve between the Korean war & Vietnam.

My DH is Army, and left for Afghanistan last year right before Memorial Day, just missing the birth of our son a couple weeks later. He came home the day our son turned 9 months, and the adjustment has been hard for everyone. This trip is much needed - 90 more days!

On a different subject, DH and I have both decided to go back to school to finish our degrees. I'm a SAHM and the degree I want, in the timeframe I want it in, is going to require some crazy packed semesters, but hopefully my kids will let me "work". I started my degree as a single mom working 2 jobs and it just got to be too much, so second time needs to be the charm. The real kicker - I'll start classes the week before our vacation. Yay for online courses!

We always have travel plans!! Being we're a military family, we live in Maryland, my husband's family is in Alabama and my family is in Iowa, so we are ALWAYS going somewhere!

We are visiting my family in June. We are all going to a cabin by a lake in Wisconsin with them all. Right now my husband is irritated with his family so he says he doesn't want to visit, but I'm sure he'll change his mind before summer is over!

For us, it's our sole summer overnight expedition. Living in Maine it's pretty easy to take day trips all over the state and NH. Fortunately, my hubby loves to drive, so we can go almost anywhere during a day. We have an above ground pool, so we can relax right at home.

We always have travel plans!! Being we're a military family, we live in Maryland, my husband's family is in Alabama and my family is in Iowa, so we are ALWAYS going somewhere!

We are visiting my family in June. We are all going to a cabin by a lake in Wisconsin with them all. Right now my husband is irritated with his family so he says he doesn't want to visit, but I'm sure he'll change his mind before summer is over!

Lake cabin in Wisconsin sounds great!! we do some day trips to St. Louis, but Disney will be our major trip of the summer. I'm thinking it'd be good to try an overnight somewhere with our DD on the air mattress to see how she does. She hated the pack n play and slept better in her stroller, so we're hoping the air mattress works better! (Toddler sized)
