For snacks, we've done a combination packing strategy. We put small, prepackaged snacks like granola bars, etc. into one medium plastic container. For other snacks like pretzels & trail mixes, we pour them into their own large ziploc bags. Then, we suck out the excess air and lay the bags...

A small fanny pack is best, imo. Or, my trick is to sneak things into the small backpack that my husband carries around all day! If you are a repeat sailer, you will get a cool Castaway Club backpack with lanyards in your stateroom when you board, so no need to buy a separate lanyard. :)
