and now that i've read a bit more on that CDC site, i'm more concerned than ever...

now i understand why they've told the olympic team to refrain from sex for 8 weeks after the olympics...

sure people who live in florida, live in florida...you deal with what you deal with...
but it will certainly come into consideration before i have to make the final payment to disney.uk for our trip next summer..

i'd say the UK public health service is the expert to which i defer - they say to avoid non-essential travel to florida.....and if you HAVE to travel to florida when you're pregnant - then obviously you should use repellent...

to glibly tell a person who is at risk, "for pete sake! Just use some insect repellent!" not only isn't helpful, but makes light of a very serious health threat...

the question in our family is how long is the effect afterwards....and from what i've read, the experts don't know the answer to that question...

well here's what the CDC actually has to say about zika areas - which now includes the US..

i can just see people wearing long sleeves and long pants while visiting WDW in the inferno of july heat.....lovely vacation to be sure...
while worrying about being bitten by a mosquito...

At this point, it is an unknown whether Florida, or which parts, have "active Zika" (meaning zika being transmitted by mosquitos in that area, as opposed to people having zika who got the virus while traveling or sexually transmitted zika from a person who traveled). If I were pregnant, would I travel to Florida right now? I'm not sure, TBH, and I'm not a terribly paranoid person. To me, ANY risk probably is not worth taking for the 9 months I'm pregnant. Waiting on a trip to Disney, for example, would be something I'd be willing to do as opposed to traveling WHILE pregnant.

Their very first suggestion is insect repellent. Wearing long sleeves and pants is a suggestion that is made in any area that has mosquitoes, it's not new to Zika.

Saying not to go is only part of what they are saying and if you are pregnant that would certainly be a reasonable precaution. What they are not doing is telling everyone to stay away from the Olympics.

we have from the very beginning talked about pregnant women and women who may become pregnant in the future...

the point is, the health services are indeed warning both pregnant women and women who may become pregnant....
and yes it is a truly serious issue whether you prefer not to consider it so....
or perhaps it doesn't affect you....it does affect my family....

right now, there have only been 4 cases in miami....let's hope it stays in miami - or better yet, disappears from florida completely...
unfortunately, it now seems that zika has become an issue that many of us must take into consideration when planning..
our big family trip to WDW is next summer (2017).....so it would seem to be a long time away...
however, we have reserved our vacation package from disney.uk - and will have to pay in full a long time in advance..
since there are several members of the family who fall into the high risk group, it's certainly possible that we will be forced to cancel...
i really hope not...i hope this is a very isolated incident and that we won't hear about locally transmitted zika again...

I never said anything about the Olympics. If I were interested in the Olympic events, or had reason to go to watch someone I knew, I would go taking regular precautions to avoid being bit. No problem at all because I am well past child bearing age.

What I did say, and I stand by it, is IF I was pregnant, I probably would not make ANY sort of "non-essential" trip to an area where mosquitos are active with zika. Being pregnant is 9 short months. Nearly all non-essential travel can be avoided for these 9 months. The risk simply would not be worth it to me. To me, it's similar to other things I did while pregnant to prevent possible harm to the fetus....I gave up coffee, avoided cigarette smoke, did not eat "cured" meat products, and did not have sushi. All these things are minor inconveniences (at best) to me.

I am of child bearing age but I am also desperately single. I was told by my dr to prevent pregnancy for 8 weeks after any mosquito bites.. I live in Missouri so that's fun.

I think the concern I would have is bug spray isn't 100% effective and if I got one bite even though I took precautions I'd be concerned.
I have no plans to get pregnant but I am in my early 30's with no children. It's not making me cancel my trip but it's good for thought should a surprise happen close to the trip etc

Exactly. And I know I can cover my kids head to toe with the strongest bug spray available, make them wear long pants and long shirts even in the heat of summer, and they STILL get bit by mosquitoes every single time they step foot outside even for five minutes. They are just extremely attractive for mosquitoes for whatever reason. I on the other hand can stand right next to them with no bug spray, in shorts and a t shirt, and if don't have a single bite. I really hope they figure out how to cure or completely prevent Zika by the time my kids are of child-bearing age themselves.

It's not something that lends itself to a cure. And it's about as likely to be eradicated completely as Malaria is in the jungles. However, they're currently working on a vaccine, so your kids should be fine by the time they fall into that time in their lives.

Currently, they can test for the virus in blood, urine and semen samples. So if a couple were thinking of becomin pregnant, they can be tested at any time to see if they're safe to proceed. No reason other than convenience and personal preference not to have your vacation, wait a week or 2 once home and then get tested.
