Zell Miller article

Interesting article from an interesting senator. I still don't understand why, after all he's said and apparently, all the bridges he's burned to cinders, why he doesn't switch parties or at least become an independent. His speech at the RNC was effectively his resignation from the Democratic Party.

Maybe he is right about one thing: timing is everything.

Imo, he is staying a Democrat because he would like the Democratic Party to become less "left" and return to being the "party of the people"--the way it was before the Bush/Gore election and before September 11.

1) i doubt that is the reason. one man alone can't affect that kind of change, imo.

2) 9/11 didn't make the democrats more liberal. again, imo.

I understand what he's said: stay with the party, work to bring it back to the "center" (wherever that is), remain a Democrat until the day he dies (do we all become Republicans at the moment of our death?).

My point is he's lobbed more grenades into the Democratic Party than any Republican I know. He had to have known that his denunciation of his party in front of the RNC and on TV was going to alienate him from practically everyone in his party. He should hardly be surprised at the criticism leveled against him (I doubt he is).

If nothing else, he is certainly not going quietly into retirement.

Who cares...Zell has been a Democrat in name only since 9/11. After watching his speech and then "talk" to Chris Matthews I finally came to the conclusion that the guy is a nut case. Bye Bye Zell...

Well, that's the point. . .insult him and dismiss him instead of wondering what has changed with the Democratic Party (of which I used to be a member).

People that disagree and have valid points ought not to be dismissed out of hand. Those that choose to remain Democrats such as Miller and Lieberman, but disagree with some of the platform, still have valid opinions.

I usually don't talk politics, but I have to say I was never more proud to be from Georgia than when Zell gave that speech!

My feelings exactly! ::yes::

My problem is, why call him a racist? This is the guy who tried to get the confederate flag OUT of Georgia, and appointed more African Americans than that OTHER famous Georgia governor who sat in a box with Michael Moore at the DNC in boston.
