zanzibar's European Adventure

It's nearly go-time on flights! Probably another 2 weeks.

In the meantime, I've actually managed to level up my Qantas status to silver, which I was hoping might help with flight availability, but it doesn't look like it really will. Think we'd need gold to make a real difference. After a transfer from Hubby though, I've officially become a points millionaire! If only those points were dollars :rotfl:

Looking forward to getting these flights booked in to be able to start really planning an itinerary.

Getting closer to really making some solid plans! WOOT!

LOL!!! A point hoarder! (you is smart!!) I will never in my lifetime even get close. I need to win our power ball.

I'm just not really ready to plan intensely yet. You are already WAY further along than I am there, and I'm already taking pointers from you. ;)
You'll have been and gone probably before we lock in our plans though lol!

I never thought I would get to a million points either! And remember I did 'cheat' by buying some. But yeah, one powerball... I wouldn't have to worry about points at all ;)

I'm thinking of a route something like (ZERO AT ALL is set, just ideas!)

1. Fly into Frankfort. If not there, start in Prague.
2. Prague
3. Vienna
4. Budapest
5. Bucharest
6. Sofia
7. Belgrade
8. Zegreb
9. Ljubljana
10. Fly back out of Frankfort, or out of Ljublana.
I was hoping it might include Prague - it’s definitely somewhere we want to go back to. I’ve been to Sofia and Ljubljana too but both were a very long time ago…

Looking forward to finding out about what you’re able to book!

No real update yet. I think we're still about a week away from being able to get flights. Honestly, I'm getting a bit nervous with the availability (or lack thereof) that I'm currently seeing! Hopefully we'll get lucky 🤞

At least I have been able to take care of a not-so-exciting but very necessary part of trip planning... having my leave approved! I have approval to take 4-6 weeks from 'sometime soon after our annual work conference'. I just had to check with my colleagues that no one else had any clashing leave requirements at that time and they have all told me to go ahead and book what I need to 😊

We have lift-off!

Cue the happy dance :banana::banana: I have just secured our first long-haul flight!

And our arrival destination is...

Paris!

Specifically, we will be on flight AF199 (Air France), departing Bangkok at 11:35am and arriving into Paris at 7:10pm. This is a 12h 35m duration flight.

The flight cost us 125,400 points each, for a grand total of 376,200 points (and just like that, I am no longer a points millionaire lol!). Plus taxes came to 52,587 THB, which has come through as just over $2,500 AUD. Definitely not free, but not too shabby for 3 x long haul business class flights.

Here's what we can expect:

I'm super excited to be able to share the business class experience with Grandma!

The timing unfortunately isn't ideal. It's a few days earlier than I really wanted, but I really want to be at DLP for my birthday and there was no further flight availability. I would have also preferred an overnight flight to make better use of our time. Plus Air France is one of the more expensive options for taxes. However, definitely willing to compromise on those small things to get our business class flights!

We will tweak our plans slightly to spend the weekend in Paris before heading to DLP for my birthday... now to decide on our Disney accommodation!

Never heard of it.

But it sounds like you'll be getting your mon... um... points worth. :)

Never heard of it.

That is after the 7 hour flight from Perth to Bangkok. The joys of living in Australia... Luckily there are many actual joys that far make up for the lengthy travel times ;)

There is actually a direct flight option now from Perth to Paris that is 17h 20m duration, but of course it's almost impossible to find availability unless you have high level status.

Those long-haul premium cabin flights really are the best value points redemption!

Alright... I'll give you two fainting emojis.

In other news... there's a guy on Instagram who asks people trivia questions. He's kinda fun and funny. His last post (at least the last one I saw)?

What is the most remote city. People guessed mostly US cities (one person guessed Chicago! :confused3 ) with the majority saying Honolulu. I had thought perhaps Reykjavik.

Nope. It's your home town. (But you already knew that. :))

Yep, we are definitely on our own over here in Perth lol! Whether it's actually the most remote city I think depends on the definition, but I think we are the furthest from any other capital city (country or state). The nearest state capital to us is Adelaide, which is 2,694 km or 1,674 miles. In time, that is 28 hours of driving or nearly a 3 hour flight.

The closest international capital city is Jakarta (Indonesia), which is only 3,010 km or 1,870 miles. It's a 4.5 hour flight.

Now there's a long time to be sitting in a plane!
Our flight from LA to Singapore ended up being nearly 18 hours. You know it's a long flight when you can have basically a full night's sleep and still run out of movies you want to watch.

You're the definition of "Middle of nowhere"!

I don't remember exactly, but maybe most remote from another major city? I'd have to look it up again.

You're gonna need a bigger hard drive.

In other exciting news...

I've ploughed right ahead and booked our DLP accommodation!

I had a whole spiel written about how we've been considering different options, but the forum seems to have that problem again where I'm randomly being redirected so I lost it all :headache:

We considered a few options:
  • Renting a 2 bedroom apartment nearby, perhaps near the Val d'Europe train station for convenience. But I really had my heart set on staying onsite to feel like we were doing Disney 'properly'.
  • We also checked out Disney's Davy Crockett Ranch, which is cabin accommodation, not unlike Fort Wilderness, with 2 bed 2 bath cabins. However, it is a 15 minute drive from the parks, with no transport provided, and we felt like relying on rideshare services could be quite limiting.
  • We considered sharing a room at one of the nicer onsite options - some of the rooms at Newport Bay Lodge have a terrace, which would have been lovely for Grandma for non-park time. But the 3 of us sharing one room for 4 nights could be... challenging ;)
So we ended up deciding on 2 standard rooms at Hotel Cheyenne, one of the value options onsite. We're actually quite excited about the theming, it looks like a lot of fun, with a wild west theme with a Toy Story overlay. The rooms are nice enough to spend a bit of time in for Grandma if required, plus there's some nice spots outdoors she can sit for people watching etc, an onsite Starbucks, and Disney Village is probably still walkable for her from there if she wants to do some exploring. For those who are unfamiliar with the DLP hotels, I have borrowed a couple of images from Google.

I did a little bit of research to find the best way to book:
  • DLP's international site was the cheapest by a few dollars, even taking into account the exchange rate (USD) and conversion fees.
  • I also looked at Expedia because I have status and a small amount of Expedia rewards which could have helped to offset the cost. It still came in slightly more expensive than the direct option.
  • For us, booking through Qantas actually turned out to the best value. It was just slightly more expensive than both direct and Expedia, but because our status gets us extra points on hotel bookings, taking the value of the points into consideration made it significantly better value.
I have only put down a 20% deposit, and the booking is fully refundable right up until the end of August next year, so I'll keep an eye out for better deals in the meantime.

This website is sooooo buggy. Such a shame. Was a great place once upon a time.

Sounds nice. From the pics, it looks pretty good.
Be warned though, I was reading another DISer's TR and she mentioned that the resorts don't have many amenities at all.
More just a hotel, than a US Disney resort.

Huh! Glad that worked out, but I'm surprised it did. :)

Correct. We're pretty ok with that though - we didn't even really use any of the amenities at the WDW resorts we stayed at. Cheyenne has a nicely themed lobby, buffet restaurant, Starbucks, bar, gift shop, plus some nice outdoor theming with character meets and gardens. Plus, the best amenity of all... being able to walk to Disney Village, both parks and ALL the other Disney hotels! I can't think of what else we could possibly want 🤔 None of us would use a pool so that's neither here nor there.

Having said that though, I haven't received anything with the confirmation number to link to our MDE yet, which we will need for our Disney tickets (comes as a package for DLP). It may still be best to book direct through Disney just to make sure we don't have any issues. I'm considering doing a back-up booking with them and cancelling the one we don't need.

Itinerary tweaks

I did a bit more work on our itinerary last night now that we've got an arrival date and location locked in. There were a couple of sticking points that might take some working out.

The problem with Bangkok

First, our flight from Bangkok on a Thursday morning. So Jetstar have a perfectly timed flight on a Wednesday, that would get us into Bangkok at 8:30pm. The problem is, it's the last direct flight that would get us into Bangkok in time to catch the next one. I realise there is heaps of buffer time between an estimated 8:30pm arrival and an 11:30am departure the next day, however Jetstar are known to be fairly unreliable and it's definitely not unheard of for flights to be cancelled/delayed until the next day. So it would be better to arrive in Bangkok on the Tuesday night to be safe. The next problem is, Jetstar doesn't fly to Bangkok on Tuesdays or Thursdays. The only other direct option is Thai Airways, which is a pretty expensive way of doing it as they charge a massive premium for one-way flights. So we might just end up with a little stopover in Bangkok which, while not necessarily a bad thing, does add extra days to the trip when we're already maxing out!

I have enough Qantas points left that I could afford to purchase a different flight and then cancel the existing one, so I have signed up for alerts, just in case we can get on a flight out of Bangkok on the Friday, which would solve that issue. Otherwise, not a deal-breaker - we'll just have to price out whether it's going to be cheaper to pay the premium for Thai Airways or add an extra night in Bangkok (probably adding an extra night).

The problem with Vienna

Second issue. I've confirmed that we will need to be in Vienna on a Sunday for as close to a guaranteed performance at the Spanish Riding School as you can get. There is pretty much always a show on Sundays, but not necessarily on Saturdays. However, we had also decided that we didn't want to spend long in Vienna, and going directly there from DLP would have us arriving on a Thursday night, which would mean 4 nights there (and consequently less time somewhere else).

The other option was to go to Salzburg from DLP, however there are no direct flights or trains. I'd really prefer train travel where we can manage it, and prefer as direct as possible. I didn't really want to have to catch a suburban train back into Paris and a metro to get to the right station to then get on a train to Germany. Most of the direct trains from DLP go north or south, but I did find one that goes east to a town called Strasbourg which I'd never heard of. From there, we could get a train to Stuttgart in Germany and then change to another train straight to Salzburg. I was quite happy to have a night in a random town as a stopover, but when I looked up Strasbourg, it actually looks kind of amazing! And since we were going to end up with 8 nights in Salzburg, I've decided it's worth spending 2 nights in Strasbourg on the way through since the train to Stuttgart leaves early in the morning.

The problem with the UK

So after a week in Salzburg, we can take the train to Vienna on a Saturday, have the Sunday for the Spanish Riding School, and then fly out on the Monday. Which leaves us just over 2 weeks to round out the trip, which sounds like a lot, but is proving quite tricky to try to squeeze in the family visit in Liverpool, at least a week in Wales, a few days in London (I'd like at least 3 nights, preferably 4), and then the journey home via Hong Kong (Hubby wants at least 3 nights, preferably 4).

And of course this last section is fairly dependent on what flights we can get home too, so will be a work in progress for a while!

we didn't even really use any of the amenities at the WDW resorts we stayed at.
I'm the same way. I think the only amenities I typically use at the resort (other than the room) is the bus stop and maybe the food court for a drink.

Lots!

Well, well, well!
I was surprised to see this.
Years ago, we discovered that we have distant(ish) relatives (whom we've never met) on my dad's side who live in... Strasbourg. So I've definitely heard of it. :)
Dad's gone now, but I'll have to ask my mom who they are, again. (She's the genealogist in the family.) I do know they have the same last name as ours.
