How utterly bad is it to do laundry at Disney? We are going on a cruise for 7 days and then we'll be at Disney for 6 days. We are staying at the Poly and I have requested Tokalau...which I think is near a laundry room (although that it not why I requested it.) If I had my way, I WOULD NOT do laundry on vacation!!! However, my darling fiancee, who will be husband on this trip as we are celebrating our honeymoon, insists that we must do laundry because he doesn't feel that he has enough clothes to pack for two weeks. (How could that be??? :rotfl2:) Can you tell who is the domestic one in this relationship? :thumbsup2 (cue up jeopardy music here)

We are getting there Saturday afternoon, hopefully by check in time. If we plan to do laundry when we first get there, how much time will we lose? I don't have any park time planned but we possibly might want to go to DTD.

:laundy: <-- does anyone else wonder why this one is smiling while doing laundry??

Thanks!
Jes

We always do laundry on our trips. I wouldnt come home without doing laundry. Plus it helps on taking less luggage. I love to travel light.

We will do it when we go swimming. I just bounce back and forth between the pool and laundry room.:rotfl:

It isn't too bad-I mean doing laundry at WDW just doesn't feel as boring as doing laundry at home! The washers and dryers are both on thirty minute cycles I think and they are both two dollars.I usually take quarters from home just in case the laundry change machine is empty which would be rare, but I don't want to take a chance on losing any vacation time looking for quarters.:)I usually will put my clothes in the washer and then go to the pool, then return and put them in the dryer and then return to the pool.:) I also have a good time talking to other Guests who are doing their laundry at the same time.I have met people from England,Scotland,Canada, etc. while doing laundry.:) Just remember you are at WDW and the laundry chore is almost "magical".Well not really.;)

The last two times I have done laundry at a WDW resort it took me 3 1/2 hours!!! The washer was fine and took maybe a 35 minutes. The dryer...took forever! Granted, we had heavy close (it was January). I had to run the dryer 3 times for everything to get dry. My suggestion would be make sure you do smaller loads or when you take the clothes out from the one machine put them in to 2 separate dryers.

Congratulations!! Have a great honeymoon..

You could have house keeping do it and then you wouldn't have to worry about it at all just call down and have them pick it up and they should have it done by the end of the day, this way you don't lose any time doing your own laundry. Remember you are on VACATION!!

Those are GREAT suggestions about the dryers!Spread your clothes into several dryers so you won't have to wait through but one dryer cycle.:)

Thanks for the tip!I was not aware of this service.Do they charge by the pound? Thanks.:)

At least around here, most summer clothes are on super deep discounts. I seriously bought all 4 of us new clothes for our trip...and it didn't cost me all that much. You could probably pick him up 4 new shirts and a few pairs on shorts for dirt cheap....

Mama doesn't DO laundry on vacation!

Its not too late to call off the wedding :rotfl2:

We always do laundry on vacation because I hate to haul a lot of dirty clothes back in my luggage. The laundry room at the Poly is not a bad walk to the quiet pool so it would be convenient to put the wash in and go back to the pool for a dip.

My advice is to just use the dryer once and then take the clothes back to the room and hang them up to dry. The dryers can take a long time and if you can bypass the A/C to keep it on all the time, your clothes will dry soon. We end up with them hanging in the closet and on the backs of the chairs and daybed (my mom takes some clothespins to so she can hang up some things in the bathroom if there is one of those clotheslines in the bathtub).

I always take a ziploc of powder laundry detergent or a empty 20oz. coke bottle full of it with us so I don't have to buy it. Also I will have it if I just need to hand wash one or two items in the sink.

The trick is to be prepared for it and have it in your plans.

I don't think I could marry someone who insisted that I do laundry on vacation. Well, unless HE insisted on doing MY laundry for me! :lmao:

Just kidding...there'll be a laundry bag and price list hanging in your closet. The laundry service isn't cheap, but maybe you can let them do the shirts, pants, etc.,and then you'll just have to do a load of undies and socks.

At least that way your clothes will be nicely ironed when you get them back. A little convenience is a good thing.

My DH always loves:love: to do laundry mid-vacation for our family. He heads out one night after we have the kids bathed and all settled and rolls the suitcase down. He throws the laundry in and spends some quiet time at the bar watching some much needed sports and having a couple of cold 'drinks' ;) I get my husband back a few hours later, very relaxed after some alone time mid-vacation and a suitcase full of clean clothes and i get some quiet time to work on my scrapbooking journal! It works very well for us! :thumbsup2

I think that's a great idea. You really don't need dress clothes for WDW (unless you're going to V&A). Normally I wouldn't think that it should be unreasonable to do laundry for a two week trip, but this is your Honeymoon. Save the laundry for when you come home.

Hope you have a beautiful wedding and an exciting/relaxing/wonderful Honeymoon.

Laundry on Vacation
I always do laundry on vacation. We like to travel light, and with 5 of us, clothes for 2 weeks would be just too much to bring - AND too much to wash at home. The best part of doing laundry at the laundromat is that you can wash 5 loads at the same time (assuming there are 5 free washers) and then dry all 5 loads, again assuming there are at least 5 dryers free at the time. I would say it takes me about 2 hours to do the laundry when at WDW.
I may be a bit obsessive, or over-organized.. who knows, but this is what I do. I pack enough clothes for 1/2 the number of days we are going to be there. I also estimate how many loads of laundry I think I will need to do, and make up ziploc bags with one load's worth of laundry detergent in each. I also put dryer sheets in a ziploc as well. I pack another ziploc with enough quarters for the estimated number of loads as well. I bring a pop-up hamper (well usually 2 since there are 5 of us) that has a pocket on the side. At the mid-point of the trip, I usually get up earlier than everyone else, and drag a hamper with all my packed ziplocs down to the laundry room. I think I've been pretty lucky as I've always been able to get the number of machines I needed. I usually stay while doing the laundry, as another poster said, you meet the nicest people when doing laundry at WDW. Once it's all done, I fold it and place it all back into the hamper and darg it back to the room. (Well, sometimes I get one of my kids to help with the dragging... )
I agree with the other poster that said to separate your washer loads into more dryers. If I do 5 washer loads, I usually put them into 7 dryers. I also check the dryers about 15-20 minutes into the cycle and pull out whatever is already dry. Sometimes I end up having to do a second round on one dryer for the "jeans" or "cargo shorts" since they take longer in general. I don't remember the dryers taking a long time at the Poly. We were just at Pop last month and my observation there was that the dryers on the top seemed to work better than the dryers on the bottom. The doors on the bottom dryers did not seem to close tightly - maybe from more people using them since it's hard to reach all the way in the back of the dryers on the top. (Well, at least for me, I'm only 5'1").

Laundry at the Poly
The laundry facility is really close to Tokelau. We had a room overlooking the quiet pool, closest to the lagoon side. We just went out the other end of the building (didn't take the elevator) and it's really not far along that path to the laundry area. It has a separate waiting room with a TV and couches.
I didn't go back and forth to the quiet pool, but it is close enough to do that. I always take as many free washers/dryers as are available, so try to be very prompt in getting my clothes out of them when they have stopped, so I always stay.

:rotfl2: Most of my friends are jealous...my fiancee is definitely the most domestic man I have ever met! I usually do the laundry at home but he'll throw it in if he sees it needs done...he also does ALL the ironing!!! (for some reason, me & the iron don't get along well)! He also does most of the cooking as well. I really can't complain.

And he'll actually be right there with me in the laundry room doing it with me...I just hate the thought of wasting precious Disney time.

Thanks for all the replies! =D

:rotfl2: Seriously, all your comments are so funny!

He would definitely not like the idea of me buying him new clothes. He actually shops for himself...the only time I ever buy him clothes is if he asks me to pick him something up or an occasional sweater for Christmas. =D

Because we wives leave our husbands with the kids while we do it. Of course, because of the 30 minute wash/dry cycles, it's not worth it to walk all the way back to the room in between, but the pool bar is usually conveniently located near the laundry room, so we find ways to occupy ourselves. :drinking1

Of course, this being your honeymoon, it might be worth the walk back to the room. ;)

I always do laundry at least once because we prefer to pack light. We just wash what we'll need for the rest of the trip (or until the next laundry appointment). I bring detergent (cheaper than buying it there, and no chance of sensitivity to perfumes/dyes in a different brand than we usually buy). I bring quarters or buy a roll from the front desk or gift shop since the change machines often run out. I try to pack clothes that will dry fairly quickly (avoid denim and corduroy), but still always split the wash into at least two dryers, assuming the laundry room isn't too busy, to get out of there quicker. It's really not as bad as it sounds--bring a book, or write postcards, or my brother and SIL even did their wedding thank-you's on their honeymoon.

Thanks...that is so sweet. I really am excited and can't wait!! 2 more weeks...(really, I'm not counting! :rolleyes1 )

I agree with you........and to the OP, it is not that difficult to do a couple of loads of laundry while you are lounging around the pool, I for one wouldn't want to be toting around 2 weeks worth of dirty smelly laundry! Doing laundry means you don't have to pack as much and more room for souveniors....usually I just put a snack zip loc full of a scoop of laundry soap and throw a couple of dryer sheets in my suitcase (they do double laundry since your clothes smell good) I bring my own powdered laundry soap because some soaps are harsh on me and this way I know I will be safe......

.

The Poly pool bar (Barefoot Pool Bar) is, unfortunately, nowhere near the laundry room :guilty:
