You're on vacation. Why are you cooking in your room?

We only cook breakfast in the room. I'm on vacation and no way am I cooking for 9 people every day. I do my laundry though!

A lot of people like to cook in their rooms during vacation because it saves money, especially for longer stays. Plus, some enjoy having a home-cooked meal instead of eating out every day. It’s also convenient for families with picky eaters or dietary restrictions. Browsing your mcdonalds email for deals is great, but some still prefer the comfort of their own food. It all depends on how people want to balance convenience and cost while on vacation.

As International DVC owners our stays are always between 2-3 weeks (it is a 30 hour flight from home to WDW) and always in a 1-Bedroom (it isn't "home" without my King size bed and laundry facilities). I come to relax and part of relaxing is being able to sit on the balcony while I enjoy breakfast, and also to have cozy nights in the room where I can cook up an easy dinner and relax with a glass of wine. We tend to have lunches "out" and dinners at home, then those with the energy can head back to the park in the evening.

Do you even go out for breakfast?
We do a variety of things. Sometimes have a character breakfast. Sometimes grab something from the food court (or shop) at our hotel. Sometimes grab a muffin the day before to have in the room the next morning. Sometimes wait and grab a snack item in the parks after a couple rides.

I have a friend who cooks on vacation all the time and my mind just can't compute that, lol. I've been responsible for cooking and doing dishes nearly my whole life. I need a vacation from that sometimes.

Some breakfast can be quick/simple (like you mentioned a muffin), so nice to have a refrigerator and a meal without cooking.

PSA:

How to make perfect coffee cup microwave eggs:

1) A little water in cup
2) Crack 2 eggs, break yolks with plastic knife, stir.
3) Cover with wet paper towel.
4) Microwave for 50 seconds on 50% power, stir - repeat for a total of 3 times.

Careful! They will be HOT! Cut in half and serve with cheese and ham on a toasted English muffin - better than McDonalds!!
Haha, it worked! I usually bring a little one egg waffle-like cooker but this worked too!

Also just popped it out of the cup, and chopped it up with cheese for scrambled eggs. Worked perfect!

Thanks!!!

I love breakfast out on vacation. It is my favorite meal. I do not do a table service breakfast out everyday though.

I like one table service or character meal out, one meal home and one quick service meal or snack.

Lots of potential reason.

After a while the food at resort aren’t appealing anymore.

To save money

To meet specific diet requirements

To eat a home cooked meal on a resort day

To make reheating food easier

There are many more reasons but those are the ones I’ve thought about

Another reason: We often get 2 bedrooms and bring friends. So we enjoy cooking together in the room or grilling out by the pool. So much cheaper for 6 or 8 people. We can stock the fridge with the wine we like, stock the bar, etc.

Honest question. Why? You're on vacation, why are you making meals in your room?
I agree in principle.

Only use microwave & toaster for breakfast:

choice of bagel, English muffins or toast with peanut butter & a banana. Everyone is happy, easy to grab & go

For those who elect to actually cook, enjoy. I respectfully suggest that you use the vent if making 'stinky smelling' food lol

I understand why people do it. I am not one of those people. We are childfree, so it's just DH and I. We don't eat breakfast before we hit the parks. We generally try to make rope drop, and then after a few rides are ready to eat lunch just as the places are opening. I don't like to cook at home, I only do it out of necessity, and I definitely don't want to eat something at Disney that I have cooked.
Eating boring "home food" is not "vacation special" lol
But I understand all the reasons people do it. Like dietary restrictions, kids who like their routine, saving money.

I guess I'm in the minority because I only saw a couple posts about this reason...
I actually enjoy cooking!

My dad (grandpa to my son) is the same way. He also likes to get up before the sun is out. So when we went to Aulani (2 Bedroom Villa), he had breakfast ready every morning before we were up. (Except for one day when we did the character breakfast). It's also really nice having breakfast in your PJs before you greet the outside world. Also, my wife is a little picky, so she can prepare her plate to her liking.

This gets me thinking. I wonder what percentage of guests actually use the kitchen in some capacity to cook a full-on meal? From this thread it kinda seems like the percentage is not very high.

Is this WDW specific, because at Aulani, we will only get a 1-Bedroom or higher specifically so that we CAN cook in the room. We probably would have all breakfasts, and half of our lunches and dinners in the room. Food is crazy expensive in Hawaii. Also, we use the grills out behind Aunty's Beach House as well a good bit.

I'm new to DVC and buying a contract that is currently in ROFR. I was reading about owner lockers and so many people seem to be using them for things like rice cookers, crock pots, mixers, spices, etc. Honest question. Why? You're on vacation, why are you making meals in your room?
Because I want to.
