Your Super Bowl LX Performer Is...

Bad Bunny!
That is the most unfamiliar performer that the NFL has ever selected. The popularity of the artist is largely within the Latino demographic and isn’t as known in other demos. I bet most of the audience that doesn’t speak Spanish (which much of Bad Bunny’s product is sung in) will likely switch to the Puppy Bowl… watch those Animal Planet ratings rise x100…

He's been on SNL multiple times (hilarious skit with Pedro), he just did Happy Gilmore 2, etc

That said every time there isn't a country-esque or high profile pop person or some band from the 70s or maybe 80s for the Super Bowl there are people who are like "who's that?", people complain if it's R&B or Hip Hip or Rap saying they hate it, some may have known Shakira and J Lo but still complained about their performance (not just what they did but who they are talking about how they aren't the best for the half time show). The list could go on.

I don't think they are the most unfamiliar performer ever, the past half time threads show just how little people know of people outside of a genre they don't listen to including some very high profile people.

These days because the commercials are largely released before the Super Bowl, because people aren't as into the Super Bowl in recent years they (the NFL) seem to be trying to gravitate towards younger people over time as well as capturing nostalgia but for a different generation like several years ago bringing in Dr. Dre, Eminem, Snoop Dogg, etc.

He's pretty popular with youth too and of course the planners are always trying to lure them.
I definitely think this is one of the reasons he was picked. Most marketers are trying to capture the attention of the 16-30 year olds to get them hooked on their products. Once you hit middle age and beyond unless they are trying to market a product expressly for your demographic you are no longer the target audience.

I get tired of people who only want 'older' acts and diss the newer ones, saying it's all trash (didn't our parents say the same thing?). I mean, I am an older person and I like my 80s/90s music but I also listen to quite a bit of new stuff. I know who Bad Bunny is, he's got some catchy tunes that have made their way to my playlist along with Chappell Roan, Shaboozey and others. Just because I am not in the demographic they are going for doesn't mean I can't enjoy it.

Back when The Backstreet Boys were 'the thing' (yeah I'm datin' myself), one of the nightly entertainment shows did a story on a 90-something Grandma who absolutely adored them. One of the things she said was 'You are never too old to listen to new music'. I have followed that advice :).

I mean, while it is objectively true that young people have terrible taste in everything 😉 , you've gotta let them make their own mistakes. As long as they stay off my lawn, they can listen to whatever garbage music that they like. 🤣 This is again relevant here:

Homer was in fact a little freaked out by Bad Bunny though:

The Puppy Bowl actually airs earlier in the day.

I don't know any of his music, but I'm rarely excited with who is chosen for the halftime show. I think he was already in the Shakira/JLo one, right?

No idea who that is but likely as with most of their half time shows, various other performers will also appear. In the 15 minutes or so the show lasts, they typically try to jam as much into it as possible. Thought I read somewhere the acts don't get paid but expect to benefit from the 'free' exposure they get.

Every year I hear all sorts of speculation/opinions about who gets chosen (or not) and why.

I still think the best part of the Super Bowl is watching the clever commercials that air for the first time.........LOL.

It really doesn't matter who the NFL selects to do the SB halftime show, there are folks who love it and folks who complain. The league is obviously trying to reach younger and more international fans - just look at the schedule. So Bad Bunny might not be everyone's top choice, but he's incredibly popular and was not a surprising choice. And hey, guess what - I'll watch the halftime show to watch and listen to the entertainment, and expand my narrow world a bit in those 20 minutes! Always astounds me how many haters there are who never actually listened to one note by the artist.....

I also get tired of people saying they want only the older acts. My mother-in-law and step-father-in-law are an example of that although they don't complain to the level I've heard elsewhere. I definately remember them asking "who is this what is this awful stuff, etc" when The Weeknd was a performer. Mother-in-law liked Justin Timberlake (post NSYNC) but shook her head at a rap artist because of the type of music.

I think the demographic that I'm largely speaking about is that in recent years more hip hop and rap artists have been the acts and that has ruffled more than a few feathers but excited others (largely though not exclusively Gen X, Millennials and Gen Z depending on the artist), the direction of the half-time is less Carrie Underwood or Aerosmith and that gets certain people upset. So older in terms of what I was referencing to was both the type of genre and the target audience because you can be older in age and love the music but IMO are less likely to be younger and hate the music (aside from Gen Z going toward Eminem for example)

I’m an old white woman in my late 60s & I know who Bad Bunny is. I’m more familiar with his movies than his music tho. He is a very good actor & credits list his real name. So people may have seen him as Benito A Martinez Ocasio & not realize it’s Bad Bunny.

I also have to add…good for him for doing a residency in PR. Always happy to see people who “made it” give back to their communities.
