Inspired by the charging fees for public schools thread....A poster from NY mentioned how much real estate taxes were and I was shocked.

I'm just curious by nature.:o How do real estate taxes vary across the country?

I would guess our house would sell for around $400,000 and we pay about $1,200 in real estate taxes.

   That's like 1/4 of what we pay (and our house would be slightly less in home value than yours).

We don't pay school fees either. I was blown away by the price of property taxes in New York.

I live in NH. Our home is currently for sale a 229000.00. We dont own our own land(its a HOA we have1/20th interest in 20 acres). We pay 4100.00 a year. No town services other than EMS and police.

Ours would go for about $130,000 and I think our taxes are around $2000 a year. And yes....we have a list of supplies that we need to buy the kids for school. Probably $15-20 worth per kid.

Here in northern NJ our house would have sold for $475,000 and our taxes jumped from $5800 to $7000 due to a townwide reassessment. We put on an addition which has raised our value to about $600,000 but the taxes haven't caught up with that yet!

Here is what my tax breakdown is

Total tax rate is $7.3160 For a $150,000 home (now I have a 3 bedroom one bath townhouse that would sell for about $125,000) the taxes are $3,658 and on a $250,000 house they are $6,096.94. I don't know the exact breakdown, but I believe something like 63% of that goes to the schools.

Our 80 year old, 3-bedroom, 2-bath 2400 square foot house on a busy street would probably go for $600,000 if we sold it. We pay $6,000 per year in taxes. For that, we do have great schools, a wonderful park district and efficient city services.

I live in Wisconsin, notorious for their high taxes. Our home probably has an open market value of around $175,000, and our property taxes were a whopping $4280. This in a state with a 5.6% sales tax! We'll be retiring in under 10 years, and we will certainly be relocating.

Our home would sell for about $300,000 and our property and school taxes are around $4500 with no services. When we bought the house 20 years ago, property tax was $95 and school tax was under $800. People discovered our little rural area, lol.

we pay a little over $4000 a year in property taxes (city and county). It works out to just over %2 of the property value.

I live in Minnesota, and our house would sell for about $265000 right now, and our taxes are about $2600 per year. We do not pay fees to enroll in school, but we have a very long list of school supplies, and we have to pay a small amount at the beginning of the year to help with field trips and such. Usually $20 or so. Our school districts up here all seem to be really hurting for enough money these days, they are always having referendums to vote on for more money, and laying people off and closing schools.

I have a small 2-bedroom cape on a fifth of an acre which, in 1989, was assessed at $136K, and I pay $4K in property taxes.

Bracing myself for the reassessment that's taking place this summer. Home values have gone up considerably in my neighborhood (as they have most places), and these little homes are selling for close to $200K. Obscene - I just hope our reassessment values don't reflect that significant mark-up.

We pay about $6300 with a large percentage of that going to the school. We also pay school fees which were about $220 per kid when my kids were in the public school. That didn't include supplies like pens, paper, and notebooks - it was book rental and registration fees.

We are also in an unincorporated division, so our fire protection payments are high.

Our house would probably sell for about $230k.

Our house would probably go for $125,000. Our taxes are $2700 a year. When we were looking for houses a year and a half ago, there was a house in one of the suburbs that we liked a lot. Was listed for $130,000 but the taxes were only $1800!!!

It sounds like NJ is even worse than Wisconsin. I sure won't be relocating there when I retire!

Our house is worth just under $400,000 and our taxes are about $5,400. Plus we pay taxes on our cars. That is several hundred more. I never complain about taxes because I firmly believe you get what you pay for. We live in a very nice town with good schools, nice parks and open spaces and historically good resale values. DW thought we should move to a lesser town with lower taxes and send our kids to private schools until she saw the price of the private schools. A good private school can be $25,000 per year. A fair one is $8,600. That is a lot of money when you have two kids and on top of that there are fees for everything. So I fugure I will just pay my taxes and shutup. I tell others the same thing. SE Michigan. Our home would go for $250,000 and our taxes are $3,500.00 a year. This amount is based on a 1998 home valuation of $175,000 so if we bought a house for $250,000 tomorrow our taxes would be close to $5,000.
