Your opinion of possible WDW RESORT and cruiseline casinos?

Hi everybody-
I may have been out of the loop on this one, but Miceage is speculating that Disney is doing guest surveys about this. I posted the question on Rumors board and folks over there were like "yup, we knew that" and "sounds great!"
I guess I am old fashioned, but I think this would really change that wholesome, family-friendly atmosphere that we love about Disney!

Am I in the minority here?

I edited this message for clarity-the rumor is that Disney is pushing FL gov't for permission to have casinos on Disney property-i.e. The Boardwalk area.

Right there with you. Loved the fact that there were no casinos! I can think of many better things to do with that space than give away my money! Just don't see how it goes with a family cruise. (And we don't even have kids!)

We went on a spring break cruise on Carnival out of Mobile, Alabama this year. Alabama's public schools were on spring break as well, and that sailing set a record for Carnival regarding the number of children on board. At least that's what I heard, and from the shore excursions, I certainly think it was true. The "beach break" was wonderful, you had a perfect beach for swimming, and all around there were children building sand castles, and checking for shells and snorkeling. This very same beach break on a cruise with college spring breakers had been loud and noisy with lots of beer induced games when we took it 2 years ago. We enjoyed the day much more this time, it's DH and myself.

So, if DCL goes to casinos it would be a step for self preservation. This Carnival cruise was one of the best cruises we've ever been on, and we've been on 15 of them. When we mentioned DCL at our tables where we ate breakfast/lunch, most of the families were put off by the cost of DCL, and the high cost of DCL is partly due to the lack of income from casinos.

I don't care if DCL has casinos or not, it's Castaway Cay that keeps me going back to DCL, and the idea of a Members Cruise, of course.

I for one would not be happy with a casino on board. Thats what I like about DCL compared to other lines.

Bobbi and Perdido Bay, Interesting about the Holiday ship. I took DH on a 2 day to no where cruise on that ship and it was pure misery! Of course it didn't help that it was freezing cold (literaly the pool deck was frozen with ice) our room was ice cold, like sleeping in a refridgerator, and we felt there was absolutely nothing to do on that ship. We don't gamble, so maybe that's why. I really don't think even if that ship was going somewhere we really wanted to go that I would ever get on it again. I'm really hopeful that with the new cruise terminal that maybe some other cruise lines will consider coming to Mobile. It would be nice. But as long as its just Carnival, I don't think that we'll be interested. I'm glad you enjoyed it though.

When we vacation at WDW we have to drive to Tampa to go to the casino there. I would love to see casinos at WDW.

I doubt you will see a casino at the Boardwalk. I love casinos but would not approve of one there. I wouldn't want all those people around in what is supposed to be a family atmosphere.

We have five casino hotels in our community. I've lived here 8.5 years and have never been to one to gamble. I've gone a few times for dinner or lunch, but haven't stepped foot in the casino. I would not frequent a casino at WDW or on DCL.

Disney+Casino=BAD IDEA
This totally goes against what Disney is supposed to be all about! I for one hope it never happens! It would be just sad, why would you go to Disney to go to a casino anyway? It just seems ridiculous to me.

Your use of the term "those people" sounds a little prejudice to me. I am one of those people. The family atomoshere has gone out the window at WDW anyway with the addition of all those thrill rides. It will never be what Walt wanted, a first class place for families. Letting "those" people in would hardly make a difference anymore.

I do not want to see a casino at WDW. There are many other places to go that cater to those who want to play casino games.

FWIW, my DH & I take 1-2 trips per year to Las Vegas, so we are not against gambling per se - I just don't think it belongs at WDW. If casinos are placed at WDW, we would probably sell our DVC contracts and stop visiting WDW - or at least visit a lot less often. JMHO. YMMV.

I can not imagine a casino either at WDW or on a Disney cruise ship. Terrible idea and I don't imagine it will every happen. It goes against everything Walt represented. Why people can't sail on a ship and just enjoy the ocean and destinations without sitting in a smoke filled casino beats the heck out of me. As far as competition goes, alot of people book Disney cruises BECAUSE they are not like Carnival or other cruises. Seems to me that they are having no problems filling the ships as they are. At least their high rates would indicate this.

One of the things that my DB and I love to do best ith our DF is ride the thrill rides! How is that not family-oriented?

I'm not sure about teh other comment. Compare that element that tends to follow gambling (not all people who go to casinos), but there is a certain element that takes the family-ness out of casinos.

I'm sure that element is the same group of people who made BWV lose its star, though.

Comparing thrill rides to casinos? I think I have now heard it all.

I say no way to a casino at WDW or on DCL. There are plenty of other options for those who like to gamble. if you are going on DCL go down a day early and go on the Sterling Cruise that leaves from Port Canaveral. Same for WDW - it is only an hours drive away.

I would prefer they NOT have gambling on the cruises. If anyone in the family has a gambling problem, that would basically ruin the trip for the rest of them. I do realize most people don't have that issue, and for some, the reason they don't want gambling is a spiritual one. Anyway...

The resorts are another story. I do NOT want gambling at the Boardwalk. Anyone could come in off the streets to gamble there, and I do NOT NOT NOT want that. If I ever get surveyed, I will definetly shout that from the rooftops.

P.S. If the Boardwalk ever got a casino, I would be hard pressed to continue my DVC membership. We own at the BCV, but that is just too close for comfort.

P.S.S. Yep, I have gambled and my husband likes to, but we have a family member who has an issue with it. And I have children, and I just prefer that Disney stay as family friendly as possible. There are other places for folks to go gamble. On property at Disney is not the place for that IMHO.

My vote would be no way. I live minutes from Atlantic City, and let me tell you, nothing comes good from the casino atmosphere. One thing leads to another, and before you know it, there is more "bad" than good. They have been trying to "clean" this area up for years, and it continues to get worst. Back in the 20s this place was beautiful and that was BEFORE the casino's.
The whole argument with DCL being more expensive, well yes, I agree its a lot to dish out; however you are getting so much more on DCL. You are paying for the idea of DISNEY and the whole different feel and world you get when you are around DISNEY and it's characters.
While another ship has to try harder to sell their ideas, and what they have on their ship, all DCL has to say is, it's DISNEY, and it sells by it's self. Same situation with DVC, with people know it's a different, more special timeshare, than others.
To stretch it even farther, Las Vegas, is trying to make it more family oriented, but the truth is, it's still more "un" family friendly, than say Disney World is. Money is the Root to ALL Evil. When you set up an entertainment around trying to make money, it's an unending circle, which breeds envy, and Atlantic City, is an example to this, which used to be a family friendly town.
