Your favorite at Kona Cafe dinner?

We decided to try Kona Cafe for dinner one night on our next trip. The menu looks so good there! Although we will be on the DDP, we will be paying for this dinner OOP. So that means anything goes, for example we can order appetizers instead of entrees if we really want to.

The tuna oscar, coconut almond chicken, teriyaki NY strip steak, and shrimp & scallops all appeal to me! What's your favorite there and why (even if it's not one of the entrees I mentioned)? Is there an appetizer you like to get? How is the sushi platter (I love sushi and eat it all the time)? Would any of the desserts be worth paying OOP for there? Or should we just get dessert with one of our snack credits at the Boardwalk bakery by our resort? Also, if there are any special drinks (either alcoholic or non-alcoholic), please let me know! Thanks!

The crab cakes appetizer is wonderful, at least I thought so! I didn't taste the chicken, but I thought my sister's teriyaki steak and my mother's pomegranate BBQ pork chop were delicious. I had a prime rib that was ok, but not as good as the other two entrees I sampled.

My favorite part is the Hawaiian bread with macadamia nut butter they serve at the beginning of the meal.

I tried the sushi a few months ago and found it acceptable, but not "wow this is incredible!"

Couldn't agree more. We used to always order a couple of appetizers OOP because my son really loves the sticky wings and pot stickers. Unfortunately it wasn't leaving us enough room for the bread.

For entrees we have tried, and enjoyed, the Pork Chop, the prime rib, the Teriyaki New York strip and the Tuna Oscar.

If I was paying OOP I might just go for appetizers, lots of bread and some Banana Creme Brule.

It is so very good! As others mentioned, the hawaiian bread they also serve is out of this world too. Honestly, Kona is one of our favorites. You really can't go wrong there.

The menu on All Ears states that the chicken is sauteed. Does it have that taste like it's fried? As long as it's not too oily or greasy I'm sure I would like it. DH would probably love the wings and I could even see him making a meal out of those!

This was our favorite restaurant when we were on the DDP in June. The food was very good as was the service. DH had the Teriyaki New York and thought it was the best steak he had all week. I had the rib eye and thought it was very good. We both thought they were a better value than LeCellier because flavor-wise they were so good and because they were larger. However, LeCellier was very very good also. DH just didn't like the price. We probably made a mistake with dessert. We both had the Kona Cone which we also loved but it sounds like the Kahluha cake is the best.

I always get the coconut almond chicken, it's so good! Definitely not oily or greasy, it's perfect! I also always get the kona cone for dessert, but I love ice cream, so i'm sure it's not the best thing on the menu, definitely a lot of fun though!

I don't know if its on the dinner menu, but I had the Kona Salad as an appetizer during lunch last year and it was delicious. It had pears in it and I'm not a big fruit eater, and I still loved it.

To me, the coconut almond chicken was meh...I was expecting to really love it since I love sweet/savory sort of dishes, but the chicken was dry and the coating somehow kinda soggy. Maybe it was just an off night.

Had the fondue for dessert...the fruit was fresh and fabulous, SO juicy...the cookies were a little strange, and the chocolate tasted like Hershey's syrup instead of actual melted chocolate.

DH thought his choices were just ok, he got the shrimp and scallops, and a Kona Kone for dessert. They make the cones right there so the whole place smelled fabulous...I guess it didn't taste as good as it smelled?

Can't comment one way or the other on the bread - we didn't get any, and when we noticed other tables had some and asked, our waiter said "oh yeah, we were out before and finally just started bringing it over from Ohana"...but he didn't offer to actually bring us some. Weird.

The sticky wings were FANTASTIC though...if we go back I will probably just have those as a main dish! The drinks we got were great too...Island Sunset and the Lapu Lapu (the drink they serve in a pineapple).

Kona Cafe is one of our favorite meals at WDW, for both dinner and breakfast.
Steak is very good- tender and flavorful. Had the porkchop last trip and it was delish. We have shared the salad for an appy a couple times and our DD loved the sticky wings.
I love chocolate- the kaluha cake is good, but I really enjoyed the fondue last trip- the fruit fresh, the macaroons sooo good- easily shared and a very nice way to end the meal.

This is usually our first meal when we get to WDW then we head out to the beach to watch Wishes.

DH has had the teriyaki strip steak, and it was fantastic...very tender and flavorful. I have had the shrimp and scallops and liked them. My favorite meal there is always the Mahi Mahi though. Our family always goes for the stiky wings for an appetizer...amazing. My favortire dessert is the banana creme brulee.

Just my opinion and my particular experience, since it seemed like everyone else was there...

The sushi appetizer for two was fantastic if you like sushi. You get 12 pieces in total, 3 kinds, so each person gets 2 pieces of each kind. There was a volcano roll, which was fantastic (I think it says on the sushi bar menu it's spicy but its really not), a more normal kind of roll with some fish egg on top, I usually hate fish eggs but these weren't overpowering and icky like I find them to be usually, and another type of sweet roll whose name I can't remember.

The bread is fantastic, but it was even more fantastic when our server (who was tragically slow. She took 10 minutes to even greet us and ages to get anything basic like water, but I'm sure that wasn't typical) brought out the butter.

Me and my boyfriend both ordered Island Sunsets, which are frozen, sweet, and wonderful if you liked that sort of thing.

Now as for the entrees, I got the Miso-Glazed Mahi-Mahi and found it dry and tasteless. Easily the worst entree I had the entire trip. My boyfriend got the shrimp and scallops and said it was okay, but no better than you'd get at a TGI Friday's or some other chain restaurant. Since everything else was so exceptional, the really overall crappy entrees was a disappointment.

We said we would no doubt go back, but only order from the sushi bar and eat sushi and bread! So that's my two cents, hope it helps!

Last May I had the pork chop and it was delicious. Hubby had the Miso Glazed mahi-mahi and he thought it was good, but not great. Hubby and I also had some sushi (volcano roll) and it was very good.

I don't think they still have the ribeye steak, but it was excellent and I preferred the cut and preparation to the teriyaki strip. The strip is a still great steak though

I prefer a strip steak over a ribeye. DH loves ribeye but also loves strip steak. Actually he loves just about any kind of steak I give him (sirloin, strip, tenderloin, porterhouse, and ribeye at restaurants sometimes). Like I said, I am more interested in the chicken dish, it looks very unique and tasty! The tuna oscar also looks amazing. I'm looking forward to the steak at our Le Cellier reservation where I can get filet mignon (my favorite).
