Your experience with breast reduction surgery

For all of you that have gotten it done.... DId you go through insurance? If so, how complicated/easy/frustrating was the approval process?

Yes, I had. My doctor couldn't believe how fast she got the approval from the insurance company. Neither could I.

I'm going through insurance- it's actually not a very high cost surgery- it will probably save them $$ in the end. I haven't been approved yet- I will let you know how the process goes!

So glad I happened upon this thread.

My DD is going back to the surgeon for another consult. We had the first consult, insurance approved it (though I never did ask if it was at 100% or what would be our portion) because she got scared about it and we cancelled the surgery.

That was 8 months ago and now she has been reading again about BR surgery online and even watched the procedure online. She is 18 now and has really had enough of paying $70.00 for bras her size, itchy nasty rashes "in between" and the permanent grooves in her shoulders, back and neck pain and not being able to shop for clothes that don't look like maternity, because she has to buy tops big enough to cover herself appropriately, but it balloons out in the middle.

We have had many shopping trips that have ended in tears of frustration and embarassment for her. It rips my heart apart for her. She is a DDD that came out of nowhere at 15. She's endured relentless teasing thru her high school years - the girls were the worst!

Has anyone had it done this young?

I was 26 when I had it done but I wish I had done it years before. Maybe tell your dd to find a message board? I think someone on here posted one. I'm sure she would find women who had it done so young and I pretty much guarantee that they will tell her to go for it!! I hope she does it..it will change her life!!

Very cool. What kind of documentation needed to be supplied?

Mermaid, how you get approved soon!

My doc just documented my upperback pain. I also have neck pain and grooves in my shoulders but he didn't think I needed all that. We'll see how it goes.

Did they take pictures?? My plastic surgeon took polaroids:scared1: Lol, I hope they never end up on the internet.

I went through insurance. I saw my primary Dr and then I went to a plastic surgeon. The plastic surgeon took measurments and pictures and we scheduled the surgery for about a month later. He submitted to my insurance and the next time I saw him it was in the hospital the day of the surgery. No problems at all with the insurance approval.

I was 35 when I had it done. I first inquired in my 20s and my primary Dr suggested I wait until I was 30 to get the surgery.

I went for my consultation three weeks after my 18th birthday and had my surgery a couple of months later. I can absolutely relate to what your daughter is going through. I was a 36G before my surgery, and I'm about a 34DD now but I've got quite a big frame so they "fit" perfectly!

I'm 21 now, and I can honestly say that a BR was the best thing that ever happened to me. My confidence has grown a million percent, and I feel like myself so much more than I did before. My (previously awful) posture improved almost immediately after the surgery, and I was finally able to buy clothes that fitted my whole body rather than just my chest. It's made such a positive difference to my self-esteem and my confidence to put myself out there and talk to people, since before my surgery I was sure (rightly or otherwise) that people saw me as a pair of giant breasts with a person attached, and that was no longer the case.

The surgery was so much less painful than I was expecting too. For me, the worst thing was having to sleep propped in a sitting position for two or three nights after the surgery, and then having to sleep on my back for a few weeks afterwards. I normally can only sleep curled up on my side, and it took me hours to get to sleep on my back! Really, though, it's not much to complain about after having surgery!

If you or your daughter want to ask anything, feel free to ask here or send me a PM. Good luck with her decision!

That was 15 years ago for me with an insurance company I no longer have. I don't remember if any documentation was needed, just that my doctor wrote something up for the insurance company and it was accepted.
